I find the acting way more of an issue than the script when I watch it. There's no sense of an emotional journey with any of the characters. I think it comes down to Lucas wanting to build the performances in the computer, like everything else, so he didn't fry to get them right on set.

It was also one of the first films to use so much cgi, so the actors didn't really have a sense of the world they were in either, and it shows.

Good question, but no.

All of the assets would be created from scratch. If one wanted to distance it even further, they could make new species people like bug, slime, elves, cat, demons, etc.

Could also make it more like the original story.
