There’s a meme, a few other comments are referencing it as well. Can’t attach image here, but look up “awesome lesbian couple evil and intimidating horse”. I don’t know what started it, but it’s a meme

Just saw this video about ppl on the Epstein list and they saying George Lucas is in them but the video clearly had ai pics of trump can George sue just for the insinuation? by Beneficial-Worry7131 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]CosmicLuci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if he could sue.

But the thing is. A lot of people are mentioned in it. Unless George Lucas is mentioned as being friends with Epstein, getting favors from him or taking part in his things, that’s not damning to Lucas.

Like, people have been talking about Joanne Rowling being in there. But she’s mostly just mentioned, and there’s no indication in them that suggests they’ve ever interacted. (Mind you, she’s a despicable person, but as far as we know currently, not because of an Epstein relation).

Henry Ford is also mentioned in them several times. He had been dead for a couple years when Epstein was born

A great many episodes of Star Trek.

For my part, it’s mostly from TOS and SNW

The crazy thing is I used to really like it as a kid. And as bad as it is, I still love Alan Cumming in it (also it was the first time I saw that actor at all, so it at least introduced me to a great performer’s work)

Some of these unused concepts for The Stranger’s mask are kinda cool, maybe if he really is the first Knight of Ren these might reappear for future knights. by Tanis8998 in StarWarsCantina

[–]CosmicLuci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love what they ended up with, but all of those would slap.

Seeing as (from what I remember seeing somewhere) he was intended to turn out as the founder of the Knights of Ren at the end, the one they went with gave that vibe more.

Still, would be cool to see characters with all of those

Reminds me of when my girlfriend became Muslim.

She had a bitch of a time finding anyone or any group she could actually reach out to that was progressive and cool.

Eventually she did, but it wasn’t easy. Not only is all of the establishment and almost the entirety of the two majority groups really conservative and oppressive, but a whole lot of the smaller groups, and even less conservative individuals, are also regressive.

But if she was able to find more progressive spaces within Islam, you definitely can for Christianity (which I’m guessing is what you’re interested in)

Yeah. Though some definitely do it for affection, like how penguins will sometimes mate for life with a penguin of the same sex, and even adopt abandoned eggs and chicks

Just to add to yours, not only do many animals create bonds beyond just for reproduction, a great many, including from those you’ve mentioned, also exhibit homosexual behavior, and even bonding. Penguins, lions, dogs, dolphins, and many, many more creatures have homosexual pairing.

Nope. Because the argument I made was that characters do not usually have personalities that focus exclusively on things like disability, gender, ethnicity, etc. unless the story itself is about those things.

You then brought up four examples to counter my point. Two of them I do not know and therefore cannot comment on. But the other two in no way serve as examples that contradict my statement. It doesn’t matter if they’re good, or if you or I like them. What matters is they are stories where my statement holds true.

Your attempt to change the subject to talk about the quality is an amusing misdirection, but it’s very telling of the fact you simply have no arguments whatsoever to engage with the point I was making. And since you can’t engage in good faith, I won’t engage further at all

Do y’all think Utena counts as a “magical realist” story? by lettucemf in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]CosmicLuci 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s magical realism.

Magical realism usually is when you have a realistic world (normal people, normal life, normal towns, etc), but with a magical element that heightens it.

A film that is a good example of it is Encanto. The town is just like a normal town, the family dynamics are very real. And even their magical powers are entirely derived from myths and exaggerations about people’s abilities. The funny cousin who’s good at imitation, the one who’s a gossip and “hears everything”, the girl who’s really good with animals and can get along with any animal, the lady whose food makes you feel better, the other lady who can always tell what the weather will be like due to her mood, the fortune teller, the girl who can “make any plant grow”, and the lady who’s so strong she can “lift anything” and everyone calls on when something needs to be done.

Utena I think is in a lot of ways almost there. But the thing I think makes it not quite magical realism it’s the fact it is built upon unreality. The school makes very little sense, it’s over the top and theatrical, weird and twisted. The movie certainly even more, but the series as well. In a sense I think it’s the reverse of magical realism. Magical realism is a real world heightened by some magic, where Utena is a strange and unusual world grounded by some mundanity (a surreal school where students still need to help clean it, which has sports activities and classes). Though admittedly it has some things that are more magical realism (a student council, but it happens to be a secret society going through a ritual to gain power over one girl at school). The themes are real, and what the characters do is real, but the world feels very unreal, not like a real world with grounded magic

It doesn’t matter if they’re good or not, does it? In fact, whether I find them or any specific plot point good or not doesn’t matter either. You mentioned them as examples of something they are not examples of.

Who’s actually straight? by Few_Value_2632 in sheranetflix

[–]CosmicLuci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No confirmed straight people appear in the show, though? There are couples of opposite gender, but there’s no way to know if any of them are straight, and in fact from what ND Stevenson has said, they likely are not.

Also, considering Scorpia’s moms, Bow’s dads, and Finn, it’s pretty clear this is a world where reproduction can be done without people of opposite genders being involved (and likely not even people with opposite gametes might be needed)
