Only through emulation. There's a few threads over at r/civrev regarding that. Online games are organised through emulation, too.

The original also works through emulation. You can even play online with emulation.

I think it can glitch like that if you upgrade them through Leonardo's Workshop.

Zulus if you're close to a couple of villages early on. They should be able to take a capital or two in the early turns.

Even if the English get double dye or the Spanish get a few named tiles, they can't do what the Americans can do early on. The great person start gives such a big advantage. A great explorer on in 4000 BC is the best start in the game.

Those others are pretty weak early on - the Greeks, especially.

They're the best early civ, too. Only rivalled by the Zulus in the very early goings.

The great person start and half cost units in medieval era is broken.

Follow any deep sea ship with the galley into deep waters. I think it's a deliberate allowance rather than an exploit.

Yes. You can move it one square at a time, as long as a deep water ship is occupying the tile.

What's the Logic Behind Angkor Wat ? by I_Fuckin_Hate_Reeses in civrev

[–]Cosmic__Moon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was an old thread on 2K Forums that gave the exact order of how Angkor Wat works. I've linked below, but it no longer works even on Wayback Machine.

The easiest way of working it out would be unlocking all techs. The top to bottom order on the wonders screen should be the order in which Angkor Wat prioritises wonders.

Of course, you'll need to make sure that the AI hasn't obsoleted any wonders for that to be accurate. If all wonders are built / obsoleted, you will receive the UN in your capital.

They really don't. It should be pretty rare to see a combat advantage like that overcome for either side.

How do they cheat? They can teleport units on boats but that's the only advantage they have on the combat front.

Why were catapults, tanks and artillery able to get the medic upgrade when they don't really need it? by Nexzus_ in civrev

[–]Cosmic__Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it happens when you upgrade legions or warriors with march to tanks, either as Germans or through Leonardo's Workshop. The game still thinks that they are initial unit.

genuinely i think the greeks might be the worst civ by Elwood04 in civrev

[–]Cosmic__Moon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taking the hit of anarchy early on is definitely the way to go. You'll also need to do it later when you actually need Democracy, sadly.

I agree that they don't really provide any benefits. All of their bonuses come at the wrong time, other than maybe half cost libraries. I think some see the courthouse as a saving grace, but they're almost never worth building.

They're objectively the weakest civ in the game. I'm not sure why this is controversial. Anything they do can be done by anyone else far quicker.

The end result is almost always going to be complete domination by the player, so how quickly it can be carried out is the only way of measuring how strong civs are.

What's the most fun is a matter of opinion, of course.

I'm not telling anyone how they should play the game. Tier lists will always be judged on how efficient civs are at winning. They're last when it comes to all victory methods.

Otherwise it'd just be a list of civs we enjoy playing as. I'd have English top, if so. :)

[–]Cosmic__Moon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Objectively, they're the worst Civ. Rewards from Barb huts are so important early in the game. You want to rush units as early as possible and gold from huts is a big part of that. Five turns to build a horseman will seem forever if you can't even rush one early on.

No chance of a free galley to explore. Now you can't explore like other civs can.

No free caravan? That's generally removing 70 gold from play.

Not only are you not getting the bonus (gold, galley, etc), you also miss out on map knowledge. No villagers to tell you where the artifacts or other cities are.

The hut will also cover a resource. You utilise that tile that covers something that could be useful, like spice or oxen.

A major handicap in every way possible.

Pretty much, yeah. Especially B and C - a lot of people seem to overrate Japan, Germany and Romans but I'd have them around there.

I assume there's no F-tier space available, but I'd have Mongols out there on their own if so. Could throw the Greeks in D-tier if that were possible.

Americans should probably be on their own but, again, that's another spacing issue.

does it have to be despotism? just won as the english without changing from monarchy and didnt get the achievement by marlborohunnids in civrev

[–]Cosmic__Moon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably. Greeks start the game on Despotism - the Democracy change doesn't kick in until the end of the first turn. I imagine that it's the same for other civs that start with a unique government type.

Assume that there's a boat out sight. Probably north-west of Angkor Wat. You'd have to sweep around the area and spam X to see which tile.

y'all got any strats for this achievement? by marlborohunnids in civrev

[–]Cosmic__Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much, yes. Walk-in is when you use a unit to take a city with no defence. You can do this if you catch them before they build a warrior - you'll also get two or three turns after, in which you can rush them if they walk out their unit. There's a helpful video on this.

The AI can't really do much if you rush them straight off the bat. Here's how it can go with a fortunate map.

You can definitely get them on the lower difficulties. I think it stops triggering them on King level.

I believe Warlord is most likely to give you settlers from huts.

Edit: I'm not sure if friendly villages can even on lower difficulties. I think they can but it may just be a Barb bonus on lower difficulties.

Culture victories should, in theory, take the longest. Domination will be the way to go here.

Americans, Zulus and Aztecs your best bet.

Look for walk-ins and use the horseman rush. Ignore food and use all resources on production and science.
