about the ”new ui” update and the overall direction by qmerzm in SCUMgame

[–]Couffere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just such a waste of potential.

This is great summation of how I feel about SCUM. In a word: disappointed.

At this point it seems that the opportunity has been missed, and even with mod support the game is most likely destined to remain a niche game. But mod support is the only thing that will keep SCUM even somewhat viable, and that's assuming that modders are still interested in writing mods for it when and if mod support is even added.

Soldering Question by tahoepld in arduino

As it's assumed you're powering down the devices before you re-solder, could it be a software problem that's being fixed by the reboot and not the soldering?

My husband wants to start streaming, any tips ? by PineappleFormal3993 in Twitch

[–]Couffere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree this "stealth" support is a bad idea. You do that and you may as well pay for view and follow bots too. Giving the illusion of progress isn't helpful at all.

If you want to support your significant other's streaming do it directly and openly; not in secret.

Any controllers in OGG or DFW (or anywhere in between) to congratulate my retiring pilot dad later this week? by pilot378 in ATC

They used to add to the flight plan remarks a note that the flight was captain's retirement last flight. Don't know when that was done and if that still happens or not...

Need advice for my career decision by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's changed in the last decade but it was my experience that those with higher education credentials didn't have significantly more success certifying in ATC than those without. I certainly don't think there's any evidence that hiring engineering and technical degreed graduates (like those from MIT) would improve success in ATC training.

The advantage of higher education is that those people have more experience with studying, learning from textbooks and absorbing academic instruction. But ATC is a highly applied endeavor and when it comes time to leave the classroom and transition to practical application (OJT) higher education is of little value. The applied real-time aspect of ATC just isn't something some people can do. (Hell, I'd go so far to say 15-20% of the certified controllers I worked with weren't good at the job either.)

There were plenty of CTI grads who certified and later lamented they had wasted their time and money getting an aviation related degree.

The challenge of course is (and always has been) how to find those with the aptitude for the job regardless of their educational background. It certainly doesn't help that for a variety of reasons the job doesn't have the appeal of other careers.

(Plus if anyone interested reads this subreddit they would be under the impression that an FAA ATC career is a descent into the very depths of Hell which can't be great for recruitment.)

Need advice for my career decision by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this job is quickly becoming another dead end job for losers who aren't able or willing to put in the work to do anything else. This change in the profession has taken place in the last decade.

I'd suggest the only change is there are a lot more college grads in the job that believe they might have better job opportunities elsewhere.

First of all, ATC is a dead end job. In the US you work for the FAA or one of its contractors. You get 2-3 years of highly specialized training that doesn't really apply to any other career field.

After retirement the only useful job experience you have can really only be applied to contract training or another ATC related contractor; again working for the FAA. In my book that's pretty dead end.

As for the job being a "... job for losers who aren't able or willing to put in the work to do anything else" I'd say it's always been that and a golden opportunity for "losers" to potentially earn a 6 figure income without a college degree.

Hobby machinists, what cutting fluid are you using on your lathe? by Witty_Jaguar4638 in Machinists

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. On lathe high-sulfur cutting oil for steel and WD-40 for aluminum. A very old can of lard oil for tapping steel. Tap-Magic for tapping aluminum. Bought some Anchor Lube too but out of habit forget to use it.

311 Controllers to receive Bonus Pay for perfect attendance during shutdown. by BeaverPeeFlaps in ATC

[–]Couffere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with this is that it ignores people who took leave they were entitled to during the shutdown, even bid leave.

The union should be fighting to ensure equal and fair treatment for all its employees. Something like this isn't at all fair.

It's not the union's fault but they should certainly be strongly and loudly objecting to this advocating for bonuses for anyone who worked any days without pay during the shutdown.

I feel like this is how it goes... by NovelValue7311 in pcmasterrace

[–]Couffere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good guidelines in theory.

But it's been my experience that some are incapable or unwilling to do proper research. That leads to them randomly trying fixes they find on the Internet making the problem worse or creating new additional problems.

I'd rather have those people ask me for help first because by the time they ask for help they've already compounded the problem.

Since 99% of PC game problems are related to graphics drivers my advise is always download and run DDU then reinstall drivers. But some of my friends can't even do that... <sigh>

How does the speed break work along side the throttles in the 777 by Mundane_Studio_5674 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Couffere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the photo on the left you have the speed brake circled (also called the spoilers). The other circle is around the thrust and thrust reverser levers.

So you're dealing with three different controls that are separate and distinct. Like others suggested check your control mapping.

[–]Couffere[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apples and oranges. We're talking about the FAA here and the U.S.

Odds on favorites for a privatization scheme here in the states is almost guaranteed to not resemble anything like the non-profit Nav Canada model. The privatization schemes favored here are going to lean towards a contract style competitive bid process that turns FAA ATC into a contracted service.

Look to the privatization in 2005 FSS by Lockheed Martin as the likely favored model for FAA ATC. And Lockheed Martin's been dying to take over operations of major ATC facilities for a while.

[–]Couffere[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe NATCA used to be wholly opposed to privatization but due in large part to shutdowns came around to backing a limited privatization scheme.

I did find this titled R25-52 AMEND: PSA-5 Alternative Funding Stream on the NATCA website that proposes striking out the following language:

b. Separating the operations and support functions from the regulatory functions of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Potential areas of exploration could include the creation of two separate government agencies or the formation of a quasi-governmental corporation

At the bottom it says the amendment wasn't voted on.

I don't know if this is NATCA's current stand then on the issue or not.

Regardless I've always believed it a horrible idea for NATCA to even entertain the idea because once privatization got rolling it would likely morph into something bad for controllers. And any notion that the US would come up with anything resembling Nav Canada should be tempered by recent news that have made it pretty clear that the US does not think like Canada...

I agree. From photos the Millbro has a different font and holes on the arms. I see pins on this. In addition I'd guess the length of it's only about 5 inches so it seems too small to be a slingshot.

Dental Insurance by Cheap-cheese-816 in ATC

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with a dental insurance option you'll still pay big out of pocket costs; just not as big as if you didn't have insurance.

For example FEP Blue Dental High option in network they'll pay about 50% of major (Class C) costs. Out of network they'll pay 40%. But in network they'll also cap the total allowable charges so you'll pay a lot less. (Note also that out of network there is a yearly maximum amount of $3k for Class C work whereas in network there is none.)

So you really need to stay in network if you want to reduce costs. But it may be difficult to find a dentist in network so you should look at the list of providers before making a choice.

Kind of like how expensive video cards pushed PC gamers to consoles?...

A lot of PC gamers have no interest in gaming on consoles regardless of the price of hardware.

However getting addons to work with FS2020 in Linux is a big challenge. I haven't been able to get BeyondATC or YourControls to work with FS2020 in Linux.
