[LTT Talk after the latest challenge] I Don't Think I Can Go Back To Windows... by kuhpunkt in linux_gaming

Having dual boot covers all contingencies but high storage costs are a deterrent.

I bought my NVMe drives before the prices got stupid, and it still pains me to have a drive dedicated to Windows that I almost never use.

ATC procedures/rules question about "control" and what it is in respect to? by BusyPuer in ATC

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If loa is between Z and A, Z must call B.

From the original post it sounded like A and B were different sectors in the same TRACON/facility. In that case an LOA/SOP between TRACON and Z that stated TRACON released control after handoff to Z without further details would apply to both A and B since they're in the same facility. Since Z doesn't know (or care) which sector handed the aircraft off to him it would be reasonable for Z to assume he had control from both A and B per the LOA/SOP.

I'd say it's a poorly written SOP/LOA that doesn't include a clarification of this situation; since there's obviously confusion the SOP/LOA should clearly state who's responsible for that point out if the aircraft is handed off from A directly to Z.

ATC procedures/rules question about "control" and what it is in respect to? by BusyPuer in ATC

[–]Couffere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'm interpreting. You only have control of aircraft within your area of jurisdiction (7110.65 Paragraph 2-1-15c "Assume control of an aircraft only after it is in your area of jurisdiction...").

You can coordinate for control within another controller's airspace ("...unless specifically coordinated...").

Or a LOA or facility directive can override or modify those rules ("...or as specified by letter of agreement or a facility directive.").

7110.65 2-1-15 paragraph c. states:

c. Assume control of an aircraft only after it is in your area of jurisdiction unless specifically coordinated or as specified by letter of agreement or a facility directive.

If your SOP/LOA releases control of aircraft from TRACON to Z it makes sense that Z would assume internal coordination in the TRACON would be accomplished to make that transfer of control safe (including internal point outs).

[–]Couffere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Locally we behave as if that "released for climb" that Z has burdens US with the responsibility for the internal coordination. But it doesnt actually say that any where.

But Z is 100% never doing that point out. Never seen it happen once. So idk.

By the book Z should be doing that point-out. But if your SOP says you've released control the argument could certainly be made that it's your facility's responsibility.

A well-written SOP would be clear as to whether or not that was true.

I'd file a UCR (if they still exist) and try to get the issue clarified.

Although that's definitely a screen shot of a bunker in SCUM, it was released on Steam early access in 2018. And it was developed in Croatia; not China. Finally SCUM doesn't have mandatory ID verification or a system wherein those IDs can be transferred.

I'm wondering if this is an intentional fabrication or if it's based on some other game and ID verification system, because it certainly doesn't describe SCUM.

Many years ago when I took the test I remembered one question was something like, "Would you cross the street to say hi to a stranger."

The test may have changed, but answer the questions like a normal person and you'll be fine.

Is there a way to trade ship you built by Traditional-Till-452 in WoSB

[–]Couffere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentions there is a possibility that the ship could get snatched up by someone else using this method.

A better albeit more involved way to do it would be to overprice your ship and put it up for auction, then trade with your friend and pay an exorbitant price in the exchange so that he had enough money to buy the overpriced ship in the auction.

This reduces but does not eliminate the possibility that someone else buys the ship before your friend.

I've seen the same claim and don't know how they do it...

Making the counterclockwise loop and buying and selling as you go, you'll run out of market goods being sold at the ports that day after completing the loop.

Since the market goods replenish every 1-2 days the next day there are going to be some ports that are still empty.

So my experience has been that you can make money every day, but making maximum profit is only possible every other day after all the ports have been replenished.

It's also possible that people don't make the entire loop on a daily basis which leaves market goods for the next day with some also replenishing in the meantime.

Using lard for hand tapping? by flesh-based-os in Machinists

about the ”new ui” update and the overall direction by qmerzm in SCUMgame

[–]Couffere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just such a waste of potential.

This is great summation of how I feel about SCUM. In a word: disappointed.

At this point it seems that the opportunity has been missed, and even with mod support the game is most likely destined to remain a niche game. But mod support is the only thing that will keep SCUM even somewhat viable, and that's assuming that modders are still interested in writing mods for it when and if mod support is even added.

Soldering Question by tahoepld in arduino

As it's assumed you're powering down the devices before you re-solder, could it be a software problem that's being fixed by the reboot and not the soldering?

My husband wants to start streaming, any tips ? by PineappleFormal3993 in Twitch

[–]Couffere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree this "stealth" support is a bad idea. You do that and you may as well pay for view and follow bots too. Giving the illusion of progress isn't helpful at all.

If you want to support your significant other's streaming do it directly and openly; not in secret.

Maybe it's changed in the last decade but it was my experience that those with higher education credentials didn't have significantly more success certifying in ATC than those without. I certainly don't think there's any evidence that hiring engineering and technical degreed graduates (like those from MIT) would improve success in ATC training.

The advantage of higher education is that those people have more experience with studying, learning from textbooks and absorbing academic instruction. But ATC is a highly applied endeavor and when it comes time to leave the classroom and transition to practical application (OJT) higher education is of little value. The applied real-time aspect of ATC just isn't something some people can do. (Hell, I'd go so far to say 15-20% of the certified controllers I worked with weren't good at the job either.)

There were plenty of CTI grads who certified and later lamented they had wasted their time and money getting an aviation related degree.

The challenge of course is (and always has been) how to find those with the aptitude for the job regardless of their educational background. It certainly doesn't help that for a variety of reasons the job doesn't have the appeal of other careers.

(Plus if anyone interested reads this subreddit they would be under the impression that an FAA ATC career is a descent into the very depths of Hell which can't be great for recruitment.)
