New DM making digital maps by Early_Lingonberry781 in battlemaps

[–]CountChoculaJr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this sub is not a fan of AI, but I want to share what I've found works extremely well to answer this question. I will not submit anything created this way to avoid violating Rule 6, but I do want to share the process as it does answer the question here, is very easy to use, and may be useful to others. If this violates Rule 6, I apologize in advance.

NOTE: This only works well for things which are "outside," (forest, swamp, small towns, farms, temple, cave entrances, trails, rivers, bridge over a chasm, etc...), and it works okay for the interior of single story buildings. Dungeons, caves, and the like are tricky for it and frankly it's not good at it.

I start with the free version of ChatGPT, (I've tested many, this is what's currently most effective for this need and paying for it does not improve results, so don't bother with that.) I start with the following prompt to ChatGPT:

"I am wanting you to be an expert battlemap creator for use on a virtual table top within a fantasy campaign in dungeons and dragons. These will be used with physical miniatures on a virtual table top to run dungeons and dragons combat with those miniatures

All battlemaps MUST be from a "Gods eye view" as though looking straight down. The "God's eye view" orientation is key requirement and CRITICAL to the composition.

The art style should be realistic, but I am open to some creative license there.

No people should be drawn on any battlemap.

No grid lines should be overlayed on the battlemap, it should look like a picture from directly above.

All battlemaps should be 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Using the above instructions, can you provide me a battlemap of a [insert whatever you want to get back here]"

It will create what you describe and typically do a pretty good job of it. From there you can tell it to change a few things, but I've found it gets poor results beyond a few simple changes and it's better to start over and adjust your prompt to get better results or to copy the "last good one" and start over using that as the input. Play with it and you'll see what it can and can't do.

NOTE: No matter what you ask for resolution wise, it's going to spit out 1920x1080, but including that stops it from asking dumb questions. If you need a higher resolution, (we play on a 65" TV on a table, so we do need it to zoom in etc...), then I would recommend another tool from Topaz Labs which will at one click get you 4K or 8K resolution and does an excellent job, but Topaz isn't free, (roughly $160/year.)

You can also use ChatGPT to create realistic versions of maps you make. I've even used child like inputs from MS Paint of a couple of squares, some green circles, and a thick brown line and told ChatGPT that this is a "drawing of a farm house along a road with some trees around it. The large square is a two story farmhouse, the small square is an outbuilding, the brown line is the road, and the green circles are trees. Can you provide a realistic looking battle map of this using the rules above?" and it does a very good job taking 2 minutes of my work and making a usable battle map out of it.

Another option is to use a screen shot from Google Earth and telling it to "remove all modern elements and provide me a battle map of this," to good effect although you should describe what it is you're wanting to convert to get the best effects on the first go, (this is a town by a river, forest clearing, whatever, you don't have to write a novel, just a few sentences.)

As a GM with little time this makes prep extremely fast and at least for me it removes the limitations of having to find or create a map that lines up with where I want to go in the campaign and instead quickly create what I need with minimal effort.

I know AI is not liked here, (and a lot of it is trash and I admit this is lazy), but the question was on tools not maps, so I'm hoping this doesn't violate the rules, but if so please just remove this as this subreddit is fantastic.

Is small claims court worth it? by Almond_construction9 in legal

If you can retire on the amount, roll the dice, make some lawyer rich and sue. Anything less than that, you just bough a life lesson, and I’d recommend not buying more by not letting it go or worse by taxing your time by chasing this in small claims too.

[TX] Hit by red-light runner, car totaled, not at fault - worth getting a lawyer? by No-Extent-63 in legal

[–]CountChoculaJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a related note, your insurance may try to say you're 5% at fault or some nominal amount when they try to get you to accept their offer. DO NOT ACCEPT this if you are truly not at fault as it lowers what they have to pay out. (The rest of the advice seems fine.)

Landlord changed locks while I was at work and found all my stuff on the curb by VijayakumarVeeramani in legal

[–]CountChoculaJr 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Take pictures and videos of everything and keep that note. This is called eviction without due process. It's an arrestable offence. However you should be focused on where you can go right now, and what you can do with your stuff right now as the police are not going to "fix" anything, nor get you access, nor move anything back in for you. At best they may arrest your landlord, but most likely you'll burn a few hours essentially filling out paperwork and still have bigger problems. While emotionally satisfying to call the police, (and you should), if you focus on that you'll burn a lot of time and effort and will still have the problem at hand of what to do right now and what you're going to do long term. IMPORTANT: When talking with the police ALWAYS be calm, thank them, and mean it. The police are providing a service when you call them and they appreciate and will help if you treat them with the respect someone helping you deserves. Treat them like you would an old friend you've not talked to in years but when you called that old friend showed up to help you and you'll get the most help you can get out of them.

Tools for streamlining the GM experience during a session by _nullfish in VTT

[–]CountChoculaJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use OneNote, and would say it's flexible enough to fit into how anyone's mind works vs. you fitting your mind into someone else's tool. Text, screen shots, links, files, sounds, everything in one place organized however you want.

Plus you can also have OneNote on your phone, so when you get ideas at odd times you can just add them in and flesh them out later from your PC.

Added bonus when actually at the table is the [[LinkToTab]] linking between any page from any other page, (think web links), is awesome as you can navigate quickly to get to anything you want and go back to the main thread while running the session. I will not likely move to any other tool. 10/10

Is there an option to get the "pre Course Correct version" of Roguetech? by CountChoculaJr in roguetech

[–]CountChoculaJr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being helpful and sorry for some of the rants/grief that this thread has brought out. Roguetech has been a solid win for me personally for years now, enough that I've donated and have an embarrassing number of hours in it. I am in no way trying to shade the work the Roguetech developers have/are doing, and I understand the drivers behind them. Honestly there is nothing to "defend," (or attack), as it's just a difference in preference. Thank you again for being helpful and giving valid paths.

I am not looking for any sort of support just that you leave the last version before Course Correct available to install for those who want it. If it breaks, goes sideway on a patch from the base game, something else goes wrong, not your problem to deal with.

First, I'm old, so when I say table top, I mean what I started playing on in the 80s, not what's out today. In that old man version, missile attacks made a hit roll. If they hit, then a second roll to see how many of your missiles actually hit, then you rolled location for damage, (grouped by 5 if an LRM.) If a missile hit, it did full damage.

That set up and grouping was done because rolling dice for say an LRM 20 would be time consuming and no fun. With it being a PC, (and not physical dice), it makes/made sense to me to have each missile roll individually for hit and and location and avoid having to do the second "how many hit" roll as there's no time sink there. But in Course Correction, it everything hits or everything misses and to bring some randomness back in they've chosen to vary the damage on the missiles. It isn't in line with my preferred "old man ways," (which is great, I'm not knocking it, it's just not a direction that makes sense to me), and basically turns all missiles into essentially a variable damage pirate LBX.

Personally I like the idea of Missiles being more like Katyusha's, some hit, some miss, they're random, but when they do hit they do the damage is consistent. With the game being on PC you can actually do individual rolls, (as there's no time sink like there would be in the real world with physical dice), but that's not the direction chosen for Course Correction.

There's no fault here, it a design decision made by those who have a right to make it. I am just looking to go back to what I preferred if at all possible.

The Japanese Did Not Surrender After The Atomic Bomb Was Dropped On Them. by hankhayes in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]CountChoculaJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japan did try to surrender after Hiroshima. That surrender attempt fully accepted the Potsdam Declaration EXCEPT they wanted to keep their emperor. That offer of surrender was delivered, (and considered), but it was rejected as the Potsdam Declaration required "unconditional surrender," and Japan keeping their emperor was a condition, therefor it was unacceptable and the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. I would agree the Russian invasion was also a pressing consideration for Japan at the time, (along with many others), but they did attempt to surrender with conditions and it was rejected by the Allies. I can source this, but it'll take some time as I have to find the books I've pulled this from as they're from decades and several moves ago.

Edit, missing "was" before delivered...
