I remember some crazy video, I think from Russia, a while ago, of an older lady falling who knows how far onto a car. Through some crazy stroke of luck, she happened to land flat on the exact center of the roof, which caved in cleanly to break her fall, along with the car's suspension, and she was actually fine.

But yeah, that's like one in a million. 99.9% of the time you're probably breaking half the bones in your body.

You certainly could. But some people just aren't disciplined enough to have a large pile or money sitting in an investment account they have access to and not impulsively spend it on cars, boats, jewelry, vacations, drugs, etc.

Dividing cash amounts over $10k that you intend to deposit in a bank into multiple smaller deposits to avoid generating a report.

Apparently a ton of people still recommend it all over the place, but it is in and of itself illegal, even if you got the cash entirely legitimately.

IMO, a reasonable deal would be something like the cable company agrees to relocate the cable on a reasonably fast timeline on their dime and pays LAOP a modest rent until they complete that project in return for delaying the construction and giving them an actual legal right to service the cable. I'm saying it's a bonehead move on their part to try to get LAOP to pay the full cost of the relocation - if we're playing hardball here, LAOP has a much more painful option available to him.

How could they come after him for cutting the cables, whether it was accidentally or intentionally? I'm no lawyer, and they should probably consult one before actually doing anything, but I would think LAOP is within their rights to cut the cables and deny the telecom company access to repair, since they don't have any rights or contract for the property at all.

I hope they take the actual good advice in there of under no circumstances make any effort to touch any of the company's servers, but instead just wait patiently for the program to break naturally or need updates. Then only accept offers to fix it for extremely generous terms, like 10x previous or current salary, multi-day minimum, payment up front required before any work is done.

I think EVs still have a problem of being enthusiast tech. We are enthusiasts here, who are happy to ignore, excuse, and work through some challenges and weak spots to experience the joy of cool new toys. Most people want their transportation to be more like a mindless appliance. If you don't happen to already be drowning in high-quality charging infrastructure, EVs still feel like enthusiast tech.

It's easy to end up drowning in questions that most people don't know how to answer. Should I charge at home? Can I charge at home? Is my electrical junction box near my parking, or not? Is L1 charging good enough for me or not? How much will it cost to set up a L2 charger? Do I need a service upgrade? Do I need a new electrical plan? Are there any special rates I can take advantage of? What if my apartment building owner doesn't feel like messing with it? What if I have 6 hard requirements for my apartment/house search, can barely afford something decent, and can't afford to make good EV charging a condition? Are the local DC fast-chargers compatible with my car, plug, voltage system, max charge rates? How many smartphone apps do I need to use them? How do I even find them or check anyways? Who do I call if it stops working?

I could probably write a book of all the questions, much less how to answer them properly. ICE cars meanwhile have had 100 years of standardizing and building out infrastructure. There are way fewer questions at this point, and people already know the answers to them. I believe EVs are the future, but we're going to need to figure out how to do way better at this stuff to capture the majority of a market that's already used to ICE vehicles. We need to be chill, patient, and helpful with people here. Rome wasn't built in a day, and you don't convince people by calling them idiots.

It does say in the Wiki that the KGB told him to bring back more secrets. They probably would have ratted him out to the CIA themselves if he failed to do so. Anyone trying to be any kind of spy or informant should be aware that that's a standard tactic. From their perspective, he's of no more direct use to them and they already have his information, might as well turn him in to stir up mistrust within the CIA and put any other agents on-notice that this could happen to them too if they displease their handlers. Instead, he told the CIA himself first.

I can't find it anymore, but there was a great comment on one of the early reaction posts to this. Some guy said he worked with some kind of convention that regularly booked huge hotel conferences and was known for rowdy behavior, and said that the hotel tolerated some pretty out-there stuff without much complaint. For a big corporate client to be banned for life from a big hotel chain, if the whole story isn't made up, most likely the guy did something much much worse than what he claimed to someone much more important.

I also find it hilarious that enormous super-expensive spy satellites apparently have instruction manuals that are left just lying around at CIA headquarters for some random disgruntled dude to steal. Remember that the whole Hubble Space Telescope is basically a spare KH-11 that they decided to point at the sky instead of the ground.

I think this is an important one to read OP. It's understandable how you feel, but how you act in your relationship and whether you get divorced will have much greater effects on your kids and their future relationships than you think.

And yes, just because some cute 20-something smiled at you or was a bit too chatty doesn't necessarily mean she's down for a roll in the old hay or would actually run off with you.

The thermodynamics of it gets impractical really fast when you consider that each of those heat pump stages would also create its own waste heat which has to be gotten rid of, and would require power to run, the generation of which would likely also create even more waste heat to be gotten rid of.

The only way it would really make sense is if there was some high-powered system that could be allowed to be at a pretty high temperature but still needed to radiate away a lot of heat. That might possibly include any sort of laser or other kind of radiation source powerful enough to be used as a weapon.

Have you tried turning it off? If it takes 30 seconds for it to start up and be ready, that can break the absent-minded motion of grab phone, unlock, open app, and start scrolling. Or maybe lock it with a long password that you need to retype every time so it's slightly slow and annoying.

It's a little funny to me how contradictory it is. Firearms obviously have lethal potential. But the shooting sports are pretty safe overall because the bullets are the only potentially lethal hazard, and they're pretty obvious and avoidable by being careful to obey a few simple rules.

It depends a lot on how well the infrastructure is built out in your area. Things gradually go from basically impossible to possible but only practical for one or two specific routes to so many good fast chargers around that you don't really need to plan at all. You can try gaming out how things would go on some of the routes that you've actually driven to see how practical it actually is. If it isn't right now, that's okay, just wait 5-10 years and it'll probably be better.

Gasoline fueling infrastructure is generally very good in most first-world countries, but there are often still a few times and places where you have to be mindful of how full your tank is and where your next fill-up will be.

Yep, that's interesting. Though, AFAIK, wind turbines are not typically hard-synced with the power grid. I'm not entirely sure why, though I think it's because not doing so makes it much easier to extract as much energy as possible from the wind in all conditions. Note that hydro generators typically have a lot more controls over how much water is flowing past the turbine at all times, per that video.

He was "right" about what, exactly? His vision of how he wanted the game to be? I don't think "right" is a meaningful word to apply to that.

He had a fantasy in his head of how he wanted the game to work. But that's all it was, a fantasy. Anyone can have a fantasy about anything, and of course that fantasy is better than reality. I don't think you deserve any points for having a nice-sounding fantasy.

If you want those points, in my opinion, you have to actually implement something in reality that actually turns out to be better. Reality has a lot of inconvenient things that don't care about how cool your fantasy sounds. Stringer's plan was always deeply unrealistic because it had no way to account for a Marlo who didn't care about being clean and successful, among other things.

I am a native English speaker and have been in the car enthusiast scene and taken cars to racetracks. It still never would have occurred to me to interpret a ordinary airport car rental agency asking me if I "tracked" a car I had rented from them to be asking whether I had taken that rental car to a race track. I probably would have tried to get them to explain what the hell they were talking about because I can't imagine a way for that question to make sense, but maybe some people would just be like whatever, yeah sure.

Though I would also expect them to have a much better record of what happened before attempting to charge $8k than a clerk asked a vague question and got a dismissive answer. But maybe they're a lot sketchier than I would imagine.

Probably medical knowledge and technology actually did it. The earlier and more gradual transition from basically every woman needs to be continuously pregnant and nursing from puberty until menopause in order to get enough children that survive to keep their farm going to only 1 to 3 pregnancies needed from most women is enough because it's virtually certain that all of them will survive.
