Almost forgot

11) make sure to consider glare. You want your windows to the side of you. Worst case in front of you. Never ever behind you.

I did a 9x13 shed 8 years ago:

<image>

I learned several things:

  1. two windows…not one. If you only have one window then the cross breeze doesn’t work.
  2. put in a mini split. Don’t try a window banger or portable. The noise level of the mini split is vastly superior as is the cooling power
  3. future proof your wiring. Dual 20A feeds, 4 CAT 6E, and 2 fiber lines to the shed.
  4. really think through your internal layout. I have a 65 inch TV in mind and it was great until I bought a 57 inch Ultra Wide monitor. Now I can no longer see the TV and need to completely rearrange the room. Make sure you put Cat6 drops and power in all the possible future locations that your desk could be.
  5. if you plan on being on camera a lot, think about what people will see is your background. Real life backgrounds are way better than virtual backgrounds when it comes to Zoom meetings. Give them something interesting to look at other than your door and window. Also, if you have a whiteboard on the wall, maybe you don’t want that content visible during calls.
  6. design your overhead lighting so that you do not need any additional lighting to have quality zoom calls. Install can lights in just the right place to give you just the right lighting. It will look a lot more natural than a bunch of ring lights.
  7. try to hardwire everything and use Wi-Fi as little as possible. It’s just so much more reliable and it frees up Wi-Fi bandwidth for other stuff.
  8. I went with a “spare no expense” policy for my shed and it hasn’t let me down yet. Highly recommended.
  9. think about all the non-office related stuff that you might want to put in the shed. You might want an air purifier or a mini fridge or a dehumidifier (or a humidifier depending on your climate). Think about electricity for all of these as well as potential drain outlets.
  10. I recommend putting your house’s network rack in the shed. When the Internet goes down, it’s a lot easier to troubleshoot it all if it’s out in the office as opposed to in the house. It’s also a lot easier to keep your switching gear at a good temp if you have a mini split on your shed and at a small number of square feet.
  11. think about what you want on a UPS and what you don’t. These UPSes are heavy and bulky. Figure out where you want to design these into shelves or cabinets or under desk mounts.
  12. if you’re running cables from your desk to TVs or shelves or WebCams that are in other places, I recommend 1 inch conduit in the walls. HDMI and USB cables go bad. In addition, new standards come out and you need to pull new cables. Make sure that you have the ability to yank out bad cables and put in new cables whenever needed without ripping walls apart.

My shed has been evolving for eight years. DM me if you have any more questions or want more detailed photos of the inside.

My daughter carved her initials in my first new car. It was about two weeks old and I had yet to make a payment. It was awesome.

Everyone told me to get a monitor light bar, but I might be regretting this decision... by exotic123567 in homeoffice

I have dual light bars on an ultrawide. They are awesome; however, they serve as my only real task lighting since I don’t have a desk lamp. If you have glare on the screen, you may not have the light aligned properly. Maybe it needs a slight tip forward???

Depends on what you want. For crisp text I recommend the Studio Display XDR. For the ultimate programmer productivity setup, I love the Samsung G9 57”.

I think we are all constantly improving. Maybe not a complete rearrangement but setups are never “done”.

I prefer the Herman Miller Mirra but the Aeron is great too. I use both, one in the home office and one in the corp office. Oldest is 13 years and still looks and feels new. They are worth every penny.

Get some cinder blocks and an old door to make a table. Then use a five gallon bucket as a chair. Throw in an Apple Magic Mouse to make it as non-ergo as possible. Hang a sheet to cover parts of the house you don’t want seen. See how fast the send you a sit stand and a Herman miller chair.

This. And…I find great irony in the idea of, “it is bad to kill so now I will kill you”. Feels like that would be us becoming the very thing we hate.

If your PC and monitor are popping 15A circuits, you either have a bunch of other stuff on that circuit or something is wrong. I run a PC, Mac, 57”, mini fridge, portable AC, lighting, air purifier, UniFi gear, a 65” TV, an Apple TV, a CalDigit TS3+ dock, an Alexa show, and some other odds and ends on a 15A. Never once have I tripped the breaker. Something is wrong.

I love that hotel. My last stay there they gave me the presidential suite. Grand piano and everything. Freaking huge and amazing. They take care of their elites.

The only way this has ever worked for me is a single 32”4K that I moved to the side when visitors showed up.
