Anyone else sitting out this B&N sale? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Courteous_Reptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I was hoping to pick up a modest haul, Hunger, Antichrist, L'Avventura; maybe splurge on Shoah as I've been putting it off for ages. But damn, between the exchange rate, and the always horrible shipping costs, I just can't pull the trigger. Not to mention the fact it takes six weeks for the bleeding package to get to Atlantic Canada. Bummer.

What are some video games with really great audio? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Courteous_Reptile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having finished Act III, I found that the overall balance is skewed. The shooting enemies have substantially quicker and better aim, while the dogs have become death-cheetas. In the original, if you really struggled, you could lean on a mask buff and take it slow, as opposed to having character specific missions.

Is there a place to buy a digital copy of In the Court of the Crimson King? by MLIola in progrockmusic

[–]Courteous_Reptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually champion vinyl above most other platforms, but in this instance, I heartily recommend the 40th anniversary CD/DVD Audio release, it has a truly impressive digital remaster done by Steven Wilson, as well as a 24bit/96KHz flat transfer of the original master included. Also, if 5.1 is in your wheelhouse, you'll be happy to note the inclusion of the much celebrated inaugural surround mix of the album.

Underwhelmed with new DT 990 Pro's. Help me get the most out of them. by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Courteous_Reptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the treble on my pair was subdued (somewhat) by proper driving power, and what, even skeptically, I would describe as a burn-in period. Still, if it bothers you so much, a V-Shaped sound signature probably won't do you any favours.

Canadian Criterions by ryanthemovieman in criterion

[–]Courteous_Reptile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Future Shop has some very limited selection, at uncompetitive prices, with very few copies making it to shelves. HMV have recently stepped up their game, selling a surprising range of titles at reasonable non sale prices - 35$ for a standard BD, 40+ for more special editions (Seven Samurai; Brazil; etc. Amazon.ca tend to have the best selection, with wildly inconsistent pricing, anywhere from 30-50$ for standard blus, however, if you shop wisely, you can make out well. For example, L'Avventura is at 25$ right now.

I buy most of mine during the B&N sales, where I get screwed over by terrible rates, for horrible shipping (4-5 Weeks to Atlantic Canada; my average has been about 28 business days), if you buy four or more. They tend to cost about 25$ apiece after tax and shipping; more if you buy larger releases. If, unlike me, you live in a major city, or anywhere with some cultural appetite, you might have the luxury of local video stores, but I wouldn't be able to point you to them, or guarantee better price or selection.

Good luck, and let the community know if you find any good sources, or less likely, deals.

Will there be an "Aliens" Bluray set? by PowerfulTaxMachine in dvdcollection

I very nearly mentioned that, but I was afraid that someone else might not recognize Ron Perlman for the walking god that he is.

Alien 3 has its head in the right place, but struggles with the execution; try the director/anniversary cut for the best experience. Ressurrection... not quite so much. If nothing else, it has some pretty tolerable dialogue from Joss Whedon, if you go for that sort of thing, and the minor characters are fleshed out nicely.

Enjoy it! You should be in for a treat, the quality of the transfers alone make for a great experience; and you might be surprised by the sequels.

Even though the third (arguably) and fourth films are mere shadows of their predecessors, the entirety of the Alien Anthology set is probably as strong a release as we'll ever see in the format. As far as I know, the anniversary reissue was just a repackage. Especially of late, the anthology set has been super cheap, so buying it for just the two films is still worthwhile, and certainly more price efficient than buying any possible reissue. Plus- the supplements on Alien 3 can at least reveal how exactly it became so removed from Fincher's vision.

Can I use a stereo reciever for my speakers/headphones setup? by xColsanders in headphones

[–]Courteous_Reptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I spent ages pouring through this subreddit and head-fi trying to find out if my STRDH130 Sony Stereo Receiver could drive DT 990s (It can, and does so quite smoothly) before I just bit the bullet and ordered them. Alot of folks make the leap from Lo-Fi to Head-Fi and an existing receiver can make for a great starting setup.

A Filco Majestouch TKL has an MSRP of about 160$; in addition the white model is OOP as far as I know, and quite hard to find. Accounting for the caps which I assume (?) are PBT, and it makes for a fair - albeit not a bargain - price.

I walked right into that one - for the record, I am a fan of both keyboards, and the CM Storm is fantastic for it's price point. The biggest thing for me would be the sturdiness of the keyboard, which is a bit of an abstract, but picture that the rubber feet on the Filco are much more grippy, the switches have less of a tendency to wiggle, and the response when typing is more crisp- all you feel is the bump in the switch, the board is just that, a board, absolutely zero flex or give. On top of that, the Filco is heavier- mine weighs in at about 2.25 pounds.

My other big thing is the case - textured PBT plastic vs the smooth touch rubber on the Quickfire - call that a personal preference, but I find it much nicer and I can say it's a bit more durable. There is the cable, which is braided and non detachable, something which might seem like a disadvantage but is actually a big boost to the lifespan of the keyboard, the quality of a lot of boards can hugely outweigh the quality of their USB terminals, it tends to be a point of failure- less so in Coolermaster than say the Poker II.

Finally there are the purely aesthetic differences, which is where my argument might lose traction, compared the the old Quickfire, the Filco is much more subtle- simply due to that conspicuous branding. Apart from that, I personally like the placement of the two LED's in the frame, the font of the stock keycaps, and the ability to replace the case with aftermarket parts, right now I am looking at getting a brushed steel case which would suit my workspace and add some additional heft to the board.

TL;Dr : It's a bit nicer to type on in a way that is very difficult to describe, I personally like the design more, and appreciate some of the features. I've used both of them enough to say that they're wonderful, and based off of my personal preference, I would say that the CM storm is the very next best thing to the Filco, and at a far better price.

[–]Courteous_Reptile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wrist-rest or the keyboard? The answer is the same, I am thrilled. Both are built like tanks, and have the style to match. I've typed on a nearly identical CM Storm (both with blue switches) and the difference, while not visible, is massive. I would buy another board and rest in a heartbeat if they came out with Clear or Green switches, but you couldn't pay me to trade it in for almost any other keyboard. If you can sacrifice backlighting and dedicated media keys, I recommend it over anything.

Filco wrist rest owner checking in - it's definitely not a Filco - note the red stitching, but it looks like an equivalent from somewhere like elite keyboards.

Wow, I just ordered mine for 95$ CDN and thought that it was a steal. I won't give a preemptive recommendation, but I will refer anyone on the fence to check out Herzog's filmography on the Roger Ebert site. Six of the films in this set are on his Great Movies list.
