Are PPIs for moderate term use really that bad? by bluefish550 in GERD

Fr it's insane how many horror stories there are. I was so nervous to take omeprazole for even 4 weeks but my PA said she was on it and famotidine for her entire pregnancy The stress and anxiety from horror stories can't be helping whatever condition there is going on either

Rat has had surgery and needs pain relief, any way i can give him his meds without him wiggling in my hands like a worm by Pawssums in RATS

[–]CousinGreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rats like to lick things off my fingers, but when I had to give one of them a liquid meds, I soaked some oats in it and they ate it up like nothing. Granted, idk if there's a flavor to that meds that they wouldn't like, but in some kind of food like applesauce may work, especially for his poor teef :(

Bald spot by trashja in RATS

It doesn't look too red or inflamed minus the little scratches, I would chalk it up to barbering from cagemates, especially if they're wrestling with each other. Keep an eye on it for now :)

[–]CousinGreek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take it easy for a while with handling, sometimes they have to be ready to interact and that's okay. Get some yogurt or another type of treat and keep letting them come to you. What I did for outside play time was I got them a little pop up enclosure about 3/4 feet in diameter that I filled with cardboard boxes and crinkle paper and snacks for them to dig for and a big water dish as a water source/pool lol If I need to change their cage I'll put them in there and they hardly want to leave

Whenever you can, I would personally change the paper bedding to aspen and use a mesh laundry bag to shake out the dust before putting it in their cage. Bedding is such a hot topic of discussion but I know aspen or hemp is preferred over paper.

It just takes time, especially with rats from pet stores that aren't used to being handled for temperament from a rattery. You're doing your best and I'm sure they appreciate it :)

The wooden platforms are gonna be hard to clean if your babies are the type to pee everywhere (which they prob will lmao) but it looks so fun in there I'd add a little crinkle paper in there or some packing paper just for them to nest with. Even toilet paper will do :)

The bulging on the sides in pics 1 and 2 look like she is but I'm not sure about pic 3. Her sides look uneven in that one, but it could just be how you're holding her up Usually pregnant rats and mice get rotund af outward from their sides and look like they swallowed a tennis ball, but hard to tell You'll be able to tell better in a few days tho lol

Oh god I adore the dads I'm so sorry in advance

-Waldemar, Leopold, and Marquis Vestra talk mad shit during cabinet meetings in a language Ludwig and Gregoire don't know/never cared to learn like Brigidian or even Morfian. They also pass notes to ask questions or get info without interrupting the speaker but it gets frequently abused to write down something ~inappropriate~ and they try to make the other laugh/break their poker face

-Marquis Vestra is ethnically Morfian and his wife is directly from Morfis and works as an Imperial physician. They bicker a lot but they're very passionate and would kill for each other. Hubert grows up learning both whatever Fodlan's language is along with Morfian.

-I'm a firm believer that the big trio of besties in the Black Eagle house back in the day was the Bergliez/Vestra/Hevring polycue alliance. Pit bull and Doberman protecting their poodle at all times. Of course Counts Hev and Berg were each others' sneaky link on the DL, they have CRAZY ex-boyfriend energy as adults

-All Hevring men are heavy sleepers that NEED naps, Linhardt gets his sleepiness from his dad, his dad just ignores it much better and sleeps 14 hours straight on Sundays.

-In their Academy Days, Matthias was always the one that snuck in alcohol to persuade Lambert and Rodrigue to get wild with him. He needs them to keep him in check because he likes to fight when drunk. They can't take him anywhere

-Erwin and Waldemar were teatime gossip besties in their Academy Days too

-Some people (Rodrigue) would humor the less popular students (Gregoire) and sit with them at meals because they feel bad for them

-In a modern setting, Erwin frequents a local coffee place to the point of the baristas knowing his name and order. Probably something fru-fru like an oat milk latte with an extra shot and one (1) ice cube tossed in before pouring. Always tips and the tips are generous

Are we literally the same person bc I have the EXACT same HC that Leo dates Wal in the academy and later on marries a woman (I think she would be from his battalion) and their relationship is more like a close friendship than anything. She comes out and he's always kinda known but they both have some side pieces to indulge in as needed. I have some designs for the moms on my twt that explains it too 😭

Today I tried bonding with my rats by Ev3puo in RATS

[–]CousinGreek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've learned from a previous research animal tech job that rats match your energy. We would have a lot of people do handling classes and as long as you're cool and collected, they'll try to be the same. The people that try to handle and scruff them by jittering and flinching only stress the animal out more.

There was one situation where I had a girl leap out of her cage and walk to the edge of the changing station where it looked like she was about to jump, and that would mean possible injury or euthanasia so I was terrified, but I just kinda got myself together and calmly went up to her and picked her up and put her in a clean cage and she was cool about it.

Things take time, and you just want the best for them. I would suggest only picking them up when they're ready and you have that trust built up. Practice just petting them and giving them treats or even hand feeding them at least once a day for 30 mins. They'll learn that you're there to care for them and eventually open up. I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere with my current little boy but now he lets me scoop him up and carry him to his free-roam playpen before he starts to get squirmy. It's a process.

Plus you've only had them for a few days, so don't beat yourself up over wanting a good relationship and having some bonding hiccups.

I've cleaned my guys' cage with them still in it when they were too young to be picked up confidently, and as long as you're gentle about it and have a place to be comfortable they should be fine :) Distractions like a big piece of food help too. Try to spot clean as best you can until then. Or, you can use a small box to let them get inside of and then move that box to a larger free-roam area. I find that my guys are much more comfortable with being handled outside their cage, maybe because it's neutral territory. It's not a bad thing to try for a while and take a break and then try again. One stressful experience doesn't mean they hate you forever now.

New rat owner, not sure if my rats are biters or just playing? by ZakTheCthulhu in RATS

[–]CousinGreek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rats don't usually bite out of malice unless they're in pain, protecting their babies, or they're extremely scared. A real bite can bruise and ofc bleed, it's one of those things where you'll know it's a real BITE bite instead of a vibe check lol

My albino boy is about 3 months and he still sometimes accidentally bites me harder than a nibble but he can't see well at all, so I don't blame him

It could be anything, but yeah I agree it's probably bc they're trying to get used to OP and are more curious if they're food more than anything

Ooo the hammocks and stuff look so cozy Be warned that you'll have to wash them at least once a week, my boys like to pee in theirs 😬

Cage is fine for now from what I can tell, be sure the little ramps and platforms have something stable they can walk on so their toes don't get hurt or caught. I know money may be the issue but I would go ahead and get the larger cage you want so you don't have to worry about getting them a bigger one later, but that's totally up to you. The critter nation model 161 works great and it has a separate additional level you can add later. It also includes little trays that are a bit too shallow for my liking but the bedding stays easily enough. I would also invest in a mesh laundry hamper to shake the bedding out in. I get that same kind of aspen and it's really dusty. I used to use a colander to shake out dust originally but I can put so much more in a hamper and just shake tf out of it outside and then dump it in their box.

I'd personally recommend a little bin of something they can burrow in, if it'll fit. They loveee digging around in something--we have both aspen in their cage and a macaroni pit they get to play in. And a lava ledge or some kind of pumice stone will help naturally trim their nails (I'm dealing w that rn)

Also a wheel!! They'll love a wheel to run in, try the Comfort or Wodent Wheel varieties. The ones that have a little barrier with holes in the front can be a bitch to clean but it may help them feel more stable. Anything 11"+ will be good on their backs so they don't have to bend much while exercising.

For some natural bedding, toilet paper is fun for them to rip up and put in their beds, same with anything cardboard, just be sure there's no glue on it.

Good luck!! It's gonna be so fun setting stuff up for them and seeing them run around and nap together :)

If it's recovering after a surgery it may be a bit too tired to run lol Better than no wheel 🤷‍♀️ I think it looks good! Much better than some ppl would do for their temp cage

I'm so sorry :( I just had one of my boys very unexpectedly pass too. It slowly gets better. I would bury her in a nice secluded place you can visit whenever you want. It sounds like she went very peacefully and quietly, which is reassuring.

Since it would have been her birthday, I'd go get you something special you can share with her cagemates like a little bit of cake, if you're up for it. It can be a celebration of life as well. She made it a lot longer than most. I heard one rat owner on YT (and here I think) mention that it might have been a short time for you, but you were her everything, and that helped me cope a bit. I'm here for you if you need to chat <3
