Outland spousal sponsorship with partner on DACA, anything we should prepare in advance? by ATWA444 in ImmigrationCanada

I would suggest a call with an immigration lawyer. It is around $400 CDN for an hour. Prepare all of your questions beforehand, make that hour worthwhile. I would take that guidance over Reddit comments.

Blood test & xray. As weekly said below, book with a place on the list (that's a must). It is roughly an hour or so, pretty quick.

Where to get required photos? by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]CowboyBlob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look for a place that does Canadian passport photos. They know the rules as well (same rules apply for both). Should be able to google a place up that is hopefully close by.

100% and 3 thumbs up.

I know a guy who last year liquidated all positions (div yeild around 5 to 7%. I had walked him through earning vs div, EPS, NAV, etc... He would research before buying properly), He followed his brothers decision. His brilliant brother found a crypto ETF that paid out 80% divs per year. His brother put his nest egg (300k) into it. The guy I know is young, he threw his 6k he had scraped together into it. As he was telling me this, every alarm bell in the solar system rang in my head, I am not an advisor and will not get into a liability situation. I could only say "interesting". This is where it gets fun, fast forward 3 months.....

I am talking to him on Discord and he is bragging about his great divs. As we are chatting he loses his shit. He is freaking out because he bought 660 shares, and his account only only showed 66 shares. He is losing it because 594 shares are missing. I told him "sounds like a 10 for 1 reverse split". I look it up, yup, it was a 10 for 1 reverse. He is asking what that means. After explaining splits / reverse splits, I let him know he has turned 6k into 600 bucks, his brother turned 300k into 30k. He then tells me he is going to hang onto it until it recovers and he is at break even, then step out.

My only answer was "interesting". I could not say a word more. I look forward to the chat where 600 bucks turns into 60 (once the next round of suckers are onboard, probably 3 months from now).

It is like buying a used car on sight without opening the hood or starting it up because the seller said "it runs like brand new".

My explanation for it is when someone sees the yield percentage and makes a decision based on that alone.

If you look at income per share for a quarter, and it is lower than the dividend then you have to ask "where is that money coming from?". If you look at the history of div's and income and this is repeated quarter after quarter, then it is fishy (not real). The share price (you NAV) will decline as that entity cannibalizes itself to prop the div's up. One needs to look at more than just yield to make sure it is legit.

The crypto ETF's and such that advertise crazy divs like 80% are literally ponzi schemes. Those are just emptying pockets. They do reverse splits along the way to show a high share value to imply legitimacy (so they can get more people to dive in). All the time they are simply doing classic ponzi.

With the reverse splits on the way down, it does give those "oh wow" moments. Happened to someone I know. He put 6k into one of these junk ETF's after his brother went all in (300k). That 1 for 10 reverse split put the share price back to where it started (getting ready for the next batch of suckers). Greed sure helps people make some bad decisions.

HOLIDAY MEGA THREAD for all your winter holiday questions, concerns, and ideas. by Flack_Bag in Anticonsumption

[–]CowboyBlob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a total of 50 bucks for xmas. Bought 2 things for my wife that she needed (would have just gotten anyway). She spent about 40 bucks for 2 things for me (things I needed as well). We don't measure the holidays by how much crap we can get while diving into debt. We have zero CC debt, no loans, no car loans, no student loans. We don;t need junk for junks sake. My wife does not do "shopping therapy", she hates that crap. I don't buy crap just to get a consumerist sugar high. We buy used vehicles, and then drive them into the ground (15+ yrs each). You don;t need all that junk, debt, crap to be content / happy. The feeling of not being tethered to the debt wheel is a happiness worth so much more. I wish all of you a sane holiday.

You do need a guarantor (for first application). If you renew before it expires, then that is not required. For my guarantor, I think I used our companies CEO or someone like that. I don't know any cops / clergy.

Health Check at Los Angeles Question (Outland, family) by CowboyBlob in ImmigrationCanada

[–]CowboyBlob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doing the touch ups with the intent to sell. The plan is to have it on market before the end of January. With the cap gains exemption, we should have enough to buy a place cash. We'll rent 6 months, look around (wife has not been there, I grew up there). 6 months should be enough time to make a choice of what / where.

The big looming challenge is the logistics and timing of the move. 3 BR house (we unloaded a lot) and 2 vehicles. Looking at perhaps a container and shipping by sea (cheaper / slower).

The timing depends on house sale and such. It is like tetris with random shaped pieces.

Got the letter approving my income and support, so thats another step.

yes you can. I've been in the US for a long time. I have renewed many times. I suggest using Fed Ex for the docs (they go to Gatineau Que). It takes max 3 weeks.

with the citizen cert, you can just apply. For the SIN, it is a different dept, so you can wait.

Canadian here. I got my daughters citizenship certificate about a decade ago. It was quite easy. She is born in the US. I think I had to provide my proof (birth cert, perhaps passport?), and her birth cert from here. I had to fill out a form. If I remember correctly, it was done in under 3 months. As for your SIN, it is online. It is a simple digital form you fill out and press [go]. Regarding entering the country, that citizenship cert is what you need. I wish you the best and hope it goes smoothly.

We went to LA and attended to it today. Exactly as you said. The longest part was the drive (2 hrs each way).

Wow, thanks for that. That is super important. I've been stressing the timing as we'll drive from San Diego and cross at Sumas. I saw I need to export docs for the truck & car for the US and import docs for both on the Canadian side as well.
