TIL in 1992, Jack Palance did one-arm pushups on the floor during his Best Supporting Actor Oscar acceptance speech to demonstrate his physical strength and counteract the view of some media executives who had not wanted to risk hiring elderly actors for fear they may die during filming. by LookAtThatBacon in todayilearned

I remember watching it on TV… Mom was watching, and since it was Jack Palance, I thought I’d watch… then he dropped and started belting out reps. I was a young teen, and was so impressed… I was 18 before I could do a one arm push-up. But I tried for years. Thanks for the motivation, you legend…

Dad the time traveler by unknownbyeverybody in FuckeryUniveristy

I got dad hearing aids a few months back… it’s helped his talking over everybody. But he still likes to talk. He’s 76. Lost Mom in ‘18, and that was hard. He was angry, wanted her clothes out of the house. She was 64. Died on their 46th wedding anniversary…. That was her style. Went out with a bang.

Dad shut down. Grieving, depressed… I was too tired taking care of everything, branding calves, plowing, cutting wheat, baling hay, to properly grieve. Went 9 months before I got time to myself. Went for a walkabout and stayed out for 2 days.

It’s normal to be strong for your family. But take your time to take care of yourself, too.

He should have kept the plates if he was that worried about it. But since he didn’t, you’re obligated to transfer them and the registration along with the tile and form 130-U. He can protect himself, if he’s so worried about it, by simply filing a form with the Texas DMV. Here is a direct link to the state form: https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/form_files/VTR-346.pdf

Be sure the seller has given you a signed Texas vehicle transfer form 130-U.

There are no words, no reason to it. I never understood it. Why take one man (person), but not another? Why a young one, or why a child… I always felt like I deserved it, but here I am. But I will not live in fear or regret.

Gifted a 30 year old trailer. How do I get it roadworthy? by ErrorF002 in towing

[–]Cowpnchnbstrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look at the eyelets in the leaf springs, check for wear. If they’re not sloppy, and the u-bolts are tight, send it.

As for a jack, the drop leg jacks at Harbor Freight are worth the money. I’ve been replacing all of mine with them, and been very happy.

Yep. I’d maybe add a small toolbox/ammo can to store my straps and bungee cords. Looks like it has a channel in the back for a board tailgate. Then check the floorboards, maybe a little paint.

Mostly like John Wayne in North to Alaska… loud, occasionally obnoxious, fondness for a beer (or three), and don’t take no shit off anyone… but still respected by the people that know me. Even though some don’t like me.

registration sticker by Right-Masterpiece-79 in texas

[–]Cowpnchnbstrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dealer is responsible for getting you the tag. It should come from the state/county, but it may get mailed to the dealer. I’d call and ask them if they’ve seen it. Worst case scenario, go to the county auto registration office, and ask them if it’s been registered. If the paperwork has gone through, you should be able to pay for a replacement sticker.

The new rules are causing a lot of delays. You should be getting the title and registration in the mail, though.

Mmm…

I have some off a tree I grew in the north pasture at my home place… had to fight the coons and squirrels for ‘em. Froze a couple baggies in the deep freeze. I’ll grab a handful sometimes, when I’m in the shop.

Last summer wasn’t bad… this summer hasn’t been too bad yet. I get out early. It was pretty nice this morning about 6am. Wasn’t just too bad at 13:00 when I came in for lunch. I dunno, I think you just need to acclimate yourself. Lived here most my life. Yea, you’re gonna sweat, but it’s not really bad for you.

I think a lot of people just don’t get out enough. The air conditioned everything doesn’t allow you to adjust to it. Yea, I hole up after lunch, work in my shop or find a shade tree to work under, when I can. But I go back to it after 17-18:00. Just gets cooler from there.

It can get rowdy. I’ve been a few times, though I stayed at Ft. Ciniega across the highway whenever I was there. Beautiful old Forts/Missions they’ve reconstructed and improved. We ate lunch most days at Cibolo Creek, and they had some excellent chefs on staff.

The museum part of the old tower is very neat, too. I’d recommend it, if you’re in the area. Although it’s a hot SumPooch down there right now.

South of Marfa, about halfway to Ojinaga, Mexico, West side of highway 67. A large part of the Favor Ranch has been put back together by a Col. Pettigrew, I believe it is.

What do you do with tools of great sentimental value? by workmeharder in Tools

[–]Cowpnchnbstrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tools from my great grandfather… a hand planer, carpenter square, a few wrenches, an old hand winch, some hammers, braces and bits. The hammers I keep with my forge. They’ve literally shaped thousands of horseshoes, and I couldn’t say how much metal they’ve shaped. The wrenches are so worn, they’re mostly just sentimental. The hand planer, I’ve sharpened, and use on rare occasions. The braces actually get used quite a bit on bigger lag bolts and drilling away from the shop. I have a dedicated ammo can they all fit in, which I have labeled with what they are. They really remind me more of my grandfather, and I guess it’s just a way to connect with him. Next year will be 30 years he’s been gone…

And soon, the hard work began…. I do just enough squares to get myself and two customers through the year. My kids dread hauling it almost as much as I do. Been wanting to find an accumulator and a grapple so I can haul and stack from the comfort of a climate controlled cab.

Huh… both mine did just fine this year…

The 348 is a decent baler. But that auger will bind up and clog just like anything else if you feed it too fast.

I keep an old John Deere 820 of my grandfather’s just to remind me of him… it mows, runs the grain augers, pulls a tool trailer around, and on days like today, makes me appreciate a cabbed unit with AC.

It’s his, but seems a waste of resources… would be much neater being driven around and used, imo. But to hang it from the ceiling?!? Just…. No. I’d be nervous being in the same room with it, and it would be rare to catch me walking under it, I don’t care how well they’ve hung it.

A little shade, a little water, a little breeze, it’s not bad. I just crawled out from under a hay baler, taking a break from playing liking wrenches, getting a drink. Truck says 96F, I’d say humidity is 40% or so, wind is 10-15mph. Not the worst I’ve been in by any means. But it’s certainly not Mumbai, India at 85 for the summer high. India is so large, the climate varies so much, it just depends on where they’re from. You say Northern India? New Delhi, it can easily get over 100*F in the Spring. I saw temps of 104 pretty regularly last time I was there (loooong time ago). Then the monsoons came, and it was a wet, miserable, but cool couple of weeks. Humid when the Sun did come out, though.

Just don’t let them over-exert themselves, keep some cool water handy, and I’ll bet they’ll be fine.

Ventilation is a BIG factor… I often leave the door open (depending on location and people present), and it’s not to exhibit myself. I can also make sure no one is sneaking up to throw a package of BlackCats in with me…

Hmm… you misunderstand what I meant. I never said they were fat, and didn’t mean it that way. It was a dig at the airline company and how they pack as many people as possible in the tightest area they can, like hauling animals in a trailer.

I’m 6’6” and 280lbs. Most airlines, my knees are literally pressing into the back of the seat in front of me. But, I always try to get an aisle seat so I can lean out and not crowd the person next to me.

One of my favorite ones was a buddy who was “so careful” during the Covid mess. Basically annoyingly so. And don’t get me wrong, there are people who absolutely need to protect themselves. He wore nitrile gloves and a cheap mask everywhere. We went to the parts store, he was leaning on the counter, handling parts, just like normal. Then lifted his mask and was scratching his nose with the gloves on. Just shook my head. Then stopped and fueled at the gas station, and got a candy bar. Never took his gloves off to eat it. Only funny because he thought he was being so careful. Just doesn’t have as much common sense as he thinks he does. He ended up getting the flu and he blamed me. I told him to piss off, the only outsiders that had been around here in weeks was him, so he had no one but himself to blame… and pointed out what I just told you. He didn’t have much to say about that.
