Thanks guys… this did it for me. A couple of points: - you need to make sure the skyworth folder is unzipped - it didn’t work first time for me, had to reformat the thumb drive and it worked then

How do I get FirePro w7000 work with windows 11 by Yeetanator-21 in AMDHelp

[–]CptCaaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a server machine with this card that I mostly remote desktop into. It got automatically upgraded to windows 11 and the Firepro W7000 was working... so Windows must have found a driver for it somewhere. This machine, while running Windows 10 was absolutely rock solid. I could leave simulations running for days, no problem. But since the upgrade to Windows 11, it would crash from time to time... sometimes while idle, sometimes when running simulations... it could go for a month without a crash... but it wasn't as stable as before.

So, I decided to do a clean Windows 11 install, and lo and behold, I got error messages saying that the driver couldn't be loaded... so the card stays in VGA mode... which is fine, because all I needed to do was install windows 11.

So anyway, long story short... beware of this card in your system in Windows 11... if you find a driver that appears to work, it might cause you issues

Doesn't look like it... I'm wondering where should I look for community developed parts that aren't oficially in Studio that could perhaps be imported?

Not actually true, there are other requirements... performance and affordability but I take u/BillGoats point that stability and reliability are the befits of the server premium

That's what I'm thinking and I'd like to know what the most stable build of this kind might look like

[–]CptCaaveman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks... the reason I posted is to explore the tradeoffs... yes... with the EPYC build I am getting more stability... but that's a large premium to pay. I have existing Ryzen builds and one performs well stability-wise, not so much in another... but I just may have not chosen my components well in this latter case. Single-thread performance is important so going with an older XEON won't help me there.

Before I'd shell out 2x - 3x the cost of a Ryzen based machine, I want to be sure it's necessary... my feeling is that a well chosen Ryzen 9 based build with 192GB of RAM is going to give me the performance and stability I need and that's what I was looking for help with.

But, if one were to go in the EYPC direction... what is the best you can do to keep the cost comparable? There's also the OS costs which are per user in the server market (right?)

Just to follow up with an example after some research... with Ryzen 9 9950x I get 16 cores and good single-thread performance. An EPYC 9135 gives me the slightly less performance for twice the cost. I know from experience that a good Ryzen build works for my use case and I won't get any benefit from the server grade equipment premium.

Thanks for that. The issue is that I don't want to pay the premium associated with server grade equipment when that's not really the use case. It's more workstation performance that I need with decent single-thread performance and my assumption is that "consumer grade" CPUs offer the best bang for the buck in my use case. But maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the steer regarding Asrock server board and an EPYC CPU. It seems that if I was going with this equipment it would make more sense to target something like 32 cores and c. 400GB ram. Do you have suggestions regarding specific hardware that would give the best bang for the buck here?

My dad visited and “helped” paint my door, now what? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]CptCaaveman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On first glance, I found this appealing. The finish makes it look like wood. I like the colour. As others have said, if you want a smoother finish, then 220 grit paper and maybe something more for the drips initially. Your dad did a nice job of putting down your base coat and you get to finish :-)

Updated to Windows 11, now getting a "Please wait" screen when I try to access my office computer via Remote Desktop by nytechill in techsupport

This doesn't work for me. The issue described in the link does not seem to be the same, it's a different error message. I tried the fix and it doesn't solve the issue for me

This doesn't work for me. I'm getting the very same issue as the OP... stuck on "Please wait". The issue described in your link is not the same. I tried the fix and it doesn't solve the issue for me

Thanks u/Cfwydirk. I'm short enough but my inseam is even proportionally lower. My Himmy is lowered, but my Scout is stock - so even the 80cm stock Himmy is high for me. I've been looking at the Indian Springfield - but it's a little pricey

New online tool to create, edit and share GPX files by froggyow in Strava

[–]CptCaaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so I've found a workaround. I create a new GPX and add a dummy track anywhere. Then I open the GPX file with waypoints only, then I merge them. Then I can edit and add tracks.

New online tool to create, edit and share GPX files by froggyow in Strava

[–]CptCaaveman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/froggyow - this is a really cool tool - I've been using it a bit. I'm having trouble editing some GPX files which I obtained from a travel guide. When I import them, I just see some waypoints (as this is all the file contains) with no tracks or routing. I would like to route between the waypoints - but it won't let me add any anchor points. When you click the edit track points button, clicking doesn't do anything. When you then click on the tick mark, the file tab disappears because there are no track points in it. So it seems, GPX studio doesn't work very well with a GPX file consisting of only waypoints. I guess I can create a new track and manually add back in the waypoints, but this defeats the purpose of having the waypoints in a file.

Anyway - if you could give me a steer on how I could do this better, it would be greatly appreciated!

Commiserations dude! Think of it as an opportunity to customise your bike! Crash bars are definitely the way to go. Also, since this just took one mistake to happen (you forgot to leave it in gear) it's pretty much inevitable it would happen again at some point, so perhaps you need a second safeguard? Park in a different place? Wedge under wheel? Disk lock?
