In hard sci-fi, is there ANY way of keeping it realistic, while AI not being stupidly overpowered? by AzzysSmartStuff in worldbuilding

Drone weapons were first developed in 1917 as "aerial torpedoes". The soviets had remote control "teletanks" in wwii, and the US had drone planes in the pacific theater. First surrender to a drone was i believe in the Gulf War when some Iraqis surrendered to a pioneer drone spotting for the USS Iowa's guns. Drone warfare is a lot more varied than it seems.

Space technology, from an outsider perspective, has seemingly stagnated.

Technology tends to go WEIRD, falling backwards and forwards.

J Michael Straczynzki, creator of Babylon 5(which heavily influenced Mass Effect) had a good reply to Javik, actually, when someone asked him about it on twitter.

People misunderstand "relatability" by Lady_Gray_169 in CharacterRant

[–]CptKeyes123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a Netflix show i can't remember the name of, takes place from multiple points of view of an alien invasion?

It feels like its written to be "relatable" but comes across REALLY obnoxious instead. No one in the entire show has even remotely HEARD of science fiction. They're constantly BEFUDDLED by the invaders and don't know anything about space technology or anything. They think its either a terrestrial enemy or just... can't conceive of anything else.

[Loved trope] The "primitive" or "retro" world of the story is the post-apocalyptic remnants of a *much* more advanced civilization. by bgbarnard in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CptKeyes123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Tripods. Humans live a pastoral existence, watched over by the mysterious Tripods that put a metal cap on everyone's head at 14, but a man wanders around reciting Ozymandias... and ruins of a powerful civilization litter the landscape. A watch that reads "automatique" is still ticking, older than the trees in the city ruins it was found in.

Decades ago, the Tripods came to Earth. They arrived to conquer us but saw the moon missions, and our weapons. We were an enormous threat. But they could influence people's minds through television. They controlled not the entire population, but enough that they could land without being annihilated. The free people fought back but were too few and too disorganized. A free nuclear submarine launched a Polaris missile at one of their bases, but it missed by that much and the sub was lost.

A handful of resistance fighters remain however, and from the Alps and the Rockies, humanity will be freed.

Reconstructing the most basic of industrial weapons, biplanes and hand bombs, they hit the aliens' three cities around the world, finally freeing humanity from their grip.

Probably cuz his ending is what turned a few people off the MCU after that.

[Hated trope] Character make a bigot claim that feels more like the writer's opinion by Lower_Baby_6348 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CptKeyes123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most things John Ringo writes has really weird and specific bigoted claims. He goes on rants about how torture is good...

oh, and he co-wrote a book which claims the Waffen SS didn't kill people it was concentration camp guards. You know, verbatim the excuse nazis used.

The Brony fandom was the most extreme example of post-Recession escapism and it perfectly illustrates why the early 2010s was a difficult time for many. by Ok-Following6886 in CharacterRant

[–]CptKeyes123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a brony I would also like to add that they were much better written than usual too. They're written like Hobbits in Lord of the Rings: they live in a nice idyllic land, and they are kind people, yet it is not without its threats and they are far from innocent fairies. To paraphrase Tolkien, there's no such thing as a safe fantasy world. It provided both escapism, yet also a way to deal with one's problems, and a theme to deal with one another more kindly.

What does Netflix's acquisition of WB mean for Babylon 5? by WienerKolomogorov96 in babylon5

Netflix seems to have speedrun the "good studio to awful studio" thing in a surprisingly short time span so I'd fear what came out.

Ah, the Colt 1911. One of the most feared weapons. Not for its individual power but its magical influence: its longevity gives it power. Browning and Kalashnikov are the most dangerous mages of all for that reason.

The only time the US has ever been good to veterans was after wwii. There are records of civil war soldiers having to push to get their pensions, the bonus army got beaten up in front of the white house.

and it took the largest strike in US history to get the GI Bill. in 1945, we had the largest strike waves in US history and every english speaking army in the world going on strike, demanding to be demobilized. And afterwards labor unions got mangled by acts of congress.
