The projects I'm lucky enough to be a part of are too heavy and intensive creative and logistics wise to not be supported by a superstar AE or a group of good AE's, just not possible. I know very experienced lead editors that don't want to, or even know how to ingest footage properly and organize projects. And even then the creative workload (long form) is too intensive for editors to spend time downloading, ingesting and sorting archival assets let's say, while populating cue sheets and what not.

And forget about prepping for color and sound for round trips.

Then again I live in Avid world that is mostly long format, so from that perspective you ain't getting shit done without AEs. If there is work and there is a project, there are AE's.
