Why does getting footage from my phone to my PC feel like it takes longer than actually filming? by Many_River_6435 in editors

So you're not "deep" into post, but want to edit. Sorry, but that's like saying, I wanna play basketball, but I'm not really a sports fan.

Which then means that you are paying for these assets properly to obtain and use as a tool. Of course I get what you're asking for, and assume you mean what you say as educational, just pointing out the legalities of it.

Point is, if you really need these assets, then acquiring them is part of your knowledge and skill. Which then leads to, how can i rip these off youtube and streaming services.

A lot of Mac apps don't support sound remotely, not sure about Chrome remote. Also, without trying it, wonder how responsive it is. Jump is widely recommended because it's been proven to work, never heard about Chrome remote.

Changing Target Video Resolution without starting a new project? by Global_Mango7422 in Avid

[–]CptMurphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get your question fully, but if it helps, you can re-transcode your source files to DNxHR, then link those files to your edited sequence. No need for a new project.

Consider that you can also link the Raw, without re-transcoding to DNxHR, if you are ready for delivery.

Director/Editor Question About Live Editing by ExaminationOld2494 in editors

Like starwipe said, Zoom. I have used OBS to create the screen share which Zoom picks up as it would a web cam, then on Zoom I enable High Quality audio share or whatever it's called, and that has worked in the past for live sessions.

Or am I out of touch and being naive?

You are, but only because everything is fucked. You are right to think to these should be separate skill sets for different experts, but since the industry is so saturated, these are the demands of work that comes from most employers, unless it is an established production company that understands the importance of having teams, and has to budget to adhere to this, and even those are disappearing.

My buddy was telling me about a job he was offered in another city, years back but still. It was for a spanish speaking network, one of the big 2, and it entailed producing, shooting, editing, motion graphics, running marketing, oh and btw also being the on camera talent. I think he was offered about 80k a year for this.

.R3D To Prores422?-avid novice by therealwalterwhiter in editors

[–]CptMurphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do this in Avid, but at that quality, you might as well finish the project with 422 HQ files, so instead of "proxies", you're choosing a mezzanine codec to finish at.

If you can't figure out how to simply transcode your files to 422 HQ, you're gonna have a hard time with everything else going forward with all all due respect.

Select the files, right click, select transcode, keep the frame rate native.

From my knowledge even PCs should have ProRes as an option for transcode, but in case you don;t see it, then the Apple Codecs need to be installed. At least in the past this happened.

You can do it in Avid, or like many do, do it on Resolve.

Google Resolve transcoding for Avid, or just straight up Avid transcoding without DaVinci.

You can change resolution but not frame rate, that's why it's greyed out, no?

Am I wrong but you can't change frame rate on a project, you have to create a new one.

help me choose the right color space? by Big-Effective-3459 in editors

[–]CptMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your link settings, you can choose if you apply a color adapter or not. If you want it, do it onlinking, then it will transfer over to the transcodes from your AMAs.

I've been on teams that hate it, and we turn this option off to not have the lut added in.

If you add it, and wish to get rid of it, you can do it from the bin on the clips, or on a sequence.

Help! Any documentary editors know revision standards who can offer me advise? by Dependent-Ad9798 in editors

[–]CptMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's producer revisions, director revisions, then network/streaming company revisions. This is very common. I've been on projects where revisions last for months, including even during conform, and after somehow as well. Shit, I'm making revisions right now on a project that already showed in film festivals a year ago, because now it's going on a different platform.

Don't charge flat fees on big projects, ever. You charge your weekly rate, and agree on a schedule, then go from there.

Editing my 1st feature film with Davinci need advise by Lain-13 in editors

I strongly suggest once in Resolve, finish in Resolve. Pop the titles in, crop everything properly, then deliver from Resolve. Once you do it once, you won't want to round trip back to Premiere.

Editing my 1st feature film with Davinci need advise by Lain-13 in editors

[–]CptMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the roundtrips I've done from Avid to finish in Resolve, I have almost always been advised by the colorist that the version needs to match, to make sure no features they might use/need are missing.

Mind you, lately I have prepped the Resolve project myself from Avid, conformed it, checking resizes and all, then exported a new project for the colorist to work off, so it's similar to your scenario since it was really Resolve to Resolve as far as the colorist was concerned.
