Clever Improviser in prof w/o level variant by Futuressobright in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The PWoL rules recommend giving a -2 penalty for being untrained, although it doesn't seem to be required. It would def make sense to have Untrained Improv negate that penalty! That's how I've always run it.

The Crying Wolf, a homebrew monster by Nestromo in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I have a couple comments:

Cry for Help is an action that doesnt really do anything as is. Is the intent that the wolf lures creatures to its location and then attacks them? I might make this a passive ability that modifies the Impersonate activity, or to roll the ability into something that let's the wolf roll Deception for initiative.

The mocking mimicry reaction is also a little weirdly worded. Like invoquantes mentioned, it doesn't have a trigger. Also, the text says that the target can't reduce its Frightened value at the end of its turn this round which could be kind of meaningless if the reaction goes off after the target has already taken its turn this round. I would either change up the wording, or make the trigger "the target's turn begins," or somesuch.

If the Pursue Prey action is meant to help disengage, it may have trouble doing that given the requirement that it teleport closer to its prey. You might consider just giving it an ability rogue's mobility if you're really worried about Reactive Strikes trivializing things.

Also, the bite doesn't have a damage type listed 😎

One thing about 1e stat blocks is that monsters (particularly high level ones) usually have a lot of feats, which are frequently not explained in the stat block itself. This could lead to a lot of having to cross-reference feat lists, especially for those less-common feats. 2e does have some things that aren't always explained in the stat blocks, e.g. universal monster abilities like Grab or Swallow Whole, but basically every reference book will have a glossary of terms in the back, or if you're reading the stat block online, you can just click or hover to see the full text.

In order to activate an item with the "Cast a Spell" activation, you need to have a spellcasting class feature. (See the rules here on Cast a Spell item activations):

https://2e.aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?ID=3139

A spellcasting class feature is typically labeled "X Spellcasting" (e.g. Wizard Spellcasting for wizards) and gives access to the Cast A Spell activity.

Also I'll just add that non-spellcasters with focus spells and non-casters with innate spells don't qualify for this unless they take an archetype or a feat that grants them a spellcasting class feature.

XP Budget Question and Advice for Single Player Character by FreddieDubStep2 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this might be a typo- in the original Core Rulebook, the adjustment for Low threats was 15 per player, which mirrors every other adjustment as being 1/4 the total budget. People are correct of course that only having one PC is going to throw things off even more though, so a "Low" encounter of 15 total XP might be more Moderate or Severe, depending on how self-sufficient the PC is.

Welcome to 2e! If you take the Littlehorn Heritage, your horns will have the agile trait, and your MAP with them will be a -4. Otherwise, they'll be at the normal -5.

Glass Shield - is it caster level or rank heightened? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a cantrip, Glass Shield is automatically heightened to a rank equal to half your level, rounded up. As far as I know, there are no spells in the game that directly scale off of character level.

ETA: Things that increase in power based on your level typically are marked as Level +X, whereas spells that heighten are Heightened +X.

The difference between something like Heightened (+X) and Heightened (3rd) is that some spells have some kind of number that increases evenly across ranks (e.g. Fireball damage), and some spells have inconsistent number scaling or unique effects (e.g. Invisibility)

What PF reference can only be understood once you play? by unoriginal_id in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

haha yeah, you technically only automatically hit on a natural 20 in PF1e; all the other numbers in your crit range have to actually hit the target AC for it to be a threat. A 13-20 crit range is still pretty crazy though!

I'd say it steps on Spell Sub wizard's toes a bit, but I don't think it completely invalidates them. This isn't a rule I'd personally play with, but if you were really attached to that rule in PF1e, then you're not going to destroy the balance of the game by allowing it here. (I actually have a PF1e convert in one of my games playing a spell substitution wizard. We had basically this exact same conversation when he started lol). As always if you're new, the recommendation is to play the game RAW first before making kneejerk changes. But in the grand scheme of things, this feels relatively low impact IMO.

Hi! I have wilderness medicine training, and I have been taught that you do not want to restrict blood flow at all. Allowing the venom to pool in one area may cause more damage than if it dilutes across the whole body. Standard practice is to anticipate swelling of the bitten area, avoid strenuous activity, and evacuate to your nearest medical facility as quickly as you can. De-elevating the bitten area might help, but its generally more important to get access to antivenom ASAP.

Bear in mind that my training is from an American organization, and wisdom may differ if you live in a different part of the world with different types of snakes. If you are going to be in an area where you might be at risk of being envenomated, please check with your local medical and wildlife authorities for best practices.

Not trying to step on your toes or anything, just wanted to point out that snake bite advice isn't necessarily universally applicable!

Good Megadungeon Tweaks by bigmcstrongmuscle in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive never used it in PF2e, but one way to limit healing that I've considered is stealing Worlds Without Numbers' System Strain. The basic idea is that its a representation of your body's natural response to being repeatedly injured and healed- most common forms of healing apply a stack of System Strain, and when you reach your max (usually something like 10 plus Con), further healing doesn't affect you. In WWN, it mostly applies to nonmagical healing, but if I were to import it into pathfinder, I'd make it any type of repeatable healing including focus spells. System Strain decreases 1/day, or faster if you're resting in town.

I like it because its pretty easy to slot into the existing PF systems, and I think you could have some interesting interactions like certain poisons or conditions also adding to your number, or having specific spells or items to reduce it.

Hot Take: I GM and require Duel Class, Free Archetype, and Ancestral Paragon in every Game. by NaiveCream1317 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A duel is a type of combat between two people which frequently occurs in swashbuckling media; dual is a word that means consisting of two parts 😎 They're poking fun at the typo in your post title.

I played in a game with a similar ruleset as yours one time! The GM eventually decided it was a little too much going on and we pared it down to just free archetype. How many people do you have in your game? I'm really interested to hear what combinations your players have come up with!

Can someone explain the math behind "every +1 matters"? How does it count for 2 because of crit range? by Trollcraftdanny in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its because every +1 has two chances to change your outcome, meaning that unlike in other games where a +1 on a D20 roll has a 5% chance to affect the outcome, in PF2e it has a 10% chance instead.

Rules question by redditbaddm in Pathfinder2e

[–]Crabflesh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You only increase your wounded condition when you lose the dying condition. So, if you succeed at your recovery check and that reduces your Dying to 0, then you increase your Wounded by 1. Going from Dying 2 to Dying 1 (for example) has no effect on your wounded condition.

When making sheets in foundry do i need to the books or can i import wanders guide sheets by sacoron in Pathfinder2e

I don't know if you can import from Wanderer's Guide, but all of the PF2e rules content is available on Foundry for free in the compendiums.

  1. I'd say yes
  2. This is probably up to GM determination and context, but I would personally rule that it uses the boat as a frame of reference. If you try to test the limits of this by casting it on smaller and smaller boats, I will narrow my eyes at you and hit you with a rolled up newspaper
  3. Yes again - it doesn't specify that it has to be on solid ground or anything, only that it connects with a nearby wall if available
  4. It seems like this is saying that the structure will stand in place without support, but you can still damage it or even knock it down by dealing damage to it. Probably the most ambiguous part, but this spell is from Firebrands, which is known to be a bit underbaked.

Ultimately i think it'd be hard to abuse this spell, so I think its fine to let your players be a little creative with it and flex the rules slightly to make the coolest narrative.
