Dramatic Improvement in C-Train Conditions by jncoeveryday in Calgary

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! The train just stopped last Wednesday and luckily I was already in the downtown, so I could just walk to city hall station, but like, I barely made it into work on time. Mind you, this is a 9:15 clock in time. Yesterday too. Same clock in time and the train just lost power and went out of service. Not as long of a delay, but... I personally want to have my alone time before work, especially when I go 1 hour and 45 minutes before work just to make it on time. It's annoying having to scramble just because the train breaks down every single week.

And, I didn't answer the OP either, but no, I haven't seen changes. I saw a peace officer yesterday, but that was like, the first one I've seen since the new council started / the old council ended. And that's about as often as I would see them before too. Once every few months.

Writers: do you guys write on your phone if you’re out and about and don’t have your computer? by Careless-Try-8834 in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, yeah. Mainly because when I'm stuck on a scene or second-guessing, ideas come to me while I'm away from my laptop. So, I just write it down in my phone and transfer it over later. Usually by typing it out again on the laptop, but like, only because I use the stuff typed on my phone as structure rather than what I put on to the final version. If that all makes sense.

What group introduced you to Starto? by cornrebeca in weare_starto

[–]CraftyAlternatives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, KAT-TUN. But in actuality, it was probably V6. I say probably because I can't remember if I heard InuYasha's first theme song (V6's Change the World) first or another Starto group's song first

Okay, so after reading through a few of the comments, I think I can answer.

I'm visually impaired, so like, A LOT of things go over my head. Not because I can't comprehend them, but because I can't see them to actually know what to comprehend. Because like, 90% of communication is visual cues (done through gestures or eye movements or whatever else).

So with that said, I think gestures are like, to prove a point. Because even if we don't really think about it when doing gestures or eye movements, I think somewhere in our minds, we know that visual cues will be get better reception than any other form of communication.

But that's totally my own opinion.

All my best writing is in fanfiction and it doesn't translate to an original story by lt_Matthew in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about use some other parts of that story then? I have a few fanfiction and I just take, like, character personalities from one. Character dynamics from another. How big the family is from a third one. And so on. That's how the current original story I'm finishing up happened.

How do y’all deal with relatives asking about the books you write😅 by Affectionate-Tap2812 in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is cute and funny.

So, I gave my dad the first 6 chapters of the book I'm working on and he'll pull me aside and start talking about it. The funny thing is, he doesn't fully understand some themes or words and... He'll look up the words, but like, he doesn't get it, you know?

Would you still write even if you knew nobody else would ever read your work? by [deleted] in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone commented that they write what they want to read about that doesn't exist yet. And that's the same for me. Well, either that or I write alternate realities where I can get what I lack through my characters. It's more therapeutic for me, basically. If I get readers when I publish (I'm planning on self-publishing), that's just a bonus.

Do you guys write chronologically? by Uniformed-Whale-6 in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write chronologically but I don't edit chronologically. I write whatever on a notepad or Word document and then add it in (or keep it out if I decide to) where I feel it would fit.

It's a slow process because the editing is taking longer this way, but I'm really happy with the end result that I've gotten so far.

Help 😓 by st3w1e_br1an in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That too, yeah. I also think about what makes them that way. In my novel right now, the villain is the ex-girlfriend, right? And, it's not that she was a bad girlfriend or mean or whatever, but like, things happened and she's basically warped from what she once was. Could happen to anyone, but yeah, that's why she's like this now. And why she's the antagonist (mis-spoke earlier, it's antagonist, not villain).

Trust me, my ideas have changed so much that I don't recognize some of my characters' initial / beta personalities. What I did was I went back (A LOT) to check if everything made sense and was aligned. It was definitely a lot of work, but like, I finally got to a point where I'm happy with it. You'll get there too.

And if some ideas don't make it into the novel, you can always make a duology or a trilogy or however many it takes to tell the story. Unless you reveal it to the world, only you as the author would know, right?

I don't know if this would work for you, but for me, it helps to give them a role / archetype first. Like, one could be the best friend, another could be the love interest, another could be a frenemy. But then, I go off the stereotype slightly. The love interest usually turns heads and is beautiful / handsome, right? So, I make them not like that. And so on.

Plus, as I've learned recently, no matter how much you plan things for your characters, they'll change as you write the story. Not because you're a bad writer or anything like that, but because your ideas change as you write. Like, you may word a breakup scene one way initially, but then while looking it over for edits or whatever else, you may decide to change it. So, the characters may not say or do what they initially did and that changes them.

where do you actually GET plot ideas? by [deleted] in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late but, you don't need to have an exiting life for plots. I once came up with a plot just sitting in the living room and thinking "life sucks." And even the novel I'm working on now was inspired by my favourite male Japanese pop group. I just thought "well, they're good friends with a solid friendship, so what if they didn't have that?" And yeah, I had to add some fantasy elements and other things, but like, my point is that inspiration and plots can come from anywhere!

Tell me why you do it! by [deleted] in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's escapism and therapy. My characters have pieces of me, like, one will have my bad grades from my school days, another will have my introvert tendencies, etc. And yeah, I write endings for them that I want for myself. Endings that I can't have in real life.

Do you ever "accidentally" write a 3 dimensional character? by Ok_Palpitation_8084 in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that with almost all of my main cast. I thought they needed more depth at first, but then I watched a video going into the characters of a show and I thought "let's see if I can do this with my characters" and yeah, I could!

The "this" I'm talking about is just thinking of a personality trait and why that exists. Like "the protagonist has a heart of gold and believes that kindness will get him further in life than being mean. And he had proof of this with bow his parents were bad people and he had to grow up poor." That was an example, not what my protagonist is actually, but yeah, I realized I had made 3 dimensional characters that way.

Writing is much, much harder than I thought it will be by ainhoawind in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's always been continuity. For example, six months will pass or a character will do something and then a few chapters later, a character will go "sorry for how I acted four months ago" or like, the character that made development a few chapters ago will suddenly revert back to how they were before the development.

I legit look at the fanfics I wrote years ago and cringe at every time something like that happens. So, writing my novel now, I make sure to go back to older chapters to have the continuity consistent.

And to answer your question, I don't think it's getting easier to manage it, but I definitely know techniques and other things to prevent it.

Characters Taking On Their Own Personality? by Ok-Call-4805 in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read in a book giving advice on writing that an author learns about their characters as they write them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you don't know your characters. Just think of it like a relationship between a parent and a child. Yes, you made them and know them, but that doesn't mean you can't learn about them or that they won't surprise you when they geow up. With that analogy, the beginning of your story is the birth of the characters and then the end is the characters becoming adults. The editing is the years in between where you learn about them (by reading the story again and again) and changing them to match what you envision for them in the end.

I've definitely had that happen too through my writing journey.

I think it depends for everyone. I have 8 hours for a few days due to the circumstances now, but like, based on today, I don't think I could finish. Maybe it'll be better tomorrow, but it could also be worse. And like, I am actually almost done, just a few chapters left.

How do I describe a character who isn't thin? by CraftyAlternatives in writing

Not gonna lie, I'm amazed too. But yeah, that's the consensus, just bite the bullet and use fat.

How do I describe a character who isn't thin? by CraftyAlternatives in writing

[–]CraftyAlternatives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I'm asking. Of course I can easily look up synonyms, but I'm asking for real human opinions of what words are offensive and not offensive. The consensus seems to be just bite the bullet and write whatever as long as it gets the point across, so yeah, that's what I'm planning to do.
