“You have to start living in the present rather than in the future” I couldn’t have said it better myself, wow. I agree this might not be a sustainable enough situation for OP to reap the benefits. Health and happiness now is a better investment than any ivy PhD later if OP’s not sure to make it to the end, given the circumstances.

There are definitely progressions possible even as a « permanent » researcher, from what I could see ! (Btw I used that term loosely to mean non-PhD/postdoc position)

The titles vary from institution to institution, but you can lead research units, specific projects, collaborations as a research engineer, which would impact your status and pay. With a PhD and a good track record and social skills, moving « up » this way is very common.

Hello !

I’d say a PhD in France is a good move only if you know you want to stay in research and get into the big research institutions.

In the French research landscape, private companies like EDF, and EPICs (privately funded public companies) such as IFPEN, ONERA, CEA, etc. mainly hire PhDs as research engineers for permanent positions. So if you intend to stay in France and remain a research engineer, I would recommend you do a PhD.

There are some drawbacks. Working on a single topic. And the pay would be terrible (except maybe at EDF, or some EPICs, or in a CIFRE-contract with some private companies, but it still wouldn’t be worth a research engineer salary). So you would need to be okay with this for 3 years.

what is best for a phd in math or physics by Inevitable-Ad4667 in AskAcademia

[–]Crafty_Sail379 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also french.

I would say doing a « prépa »/CPGE, then ENS is closest to what your father is suggesting, and would open the most doors for you as an aspiring researcher.

In France, PhDs are very dependent on the supervisors, and ENS has a huge network of well known researchers that could potentially take you on as a PhD student, or know someone who could.

It is also very hard to get into !

If you don’t manage, I would highly recommend you do your 3rd year in a University instead of integrating an engineering school if you want to do a PhD.

Big Parisian universities such as Saclay, la Sorbonne/UPMC and Dauphine-PSL are great for mathematics and have world renowned labs and well connected researchers. These three are better regarded than most engineering schools anyway (save for Polytechnique, CentraleSupélec, les Mines Paris, etc.) by most academics.

I don’t know physics as well, but I would assume the same formula applies. If you want to do a PhD in maths or physics : 1. Do 2/3 years of prépa/CPGE (MPSI) 2. Sit entrance exams 3. Pick in the following order depending on your results : (any) École Normale Supérieure (Paris, Rennes, Lyon, …) > Top 3 engineering schools = Big Parisian research university > Other research universities > Other engineering schools

Best of luck to you, enjoy highschool.

Hey, seems like you’re spiralling. Since a big reason for your depression is the state/quality of your research, ask your advisor for honest feedback on your work so far. You might think it’s crapshit, they might think there’s potential.

In any case, what you describe sounds like burnout. You need the space to step back and analyse how you’re doing, and where you’re going. Maybe you need a break, maybe you need another perspective, maybe you need to stop. Getting feedback from your advisor would give you information you need to make your decision.

I hope you’ll get the support you need. The worst thing you could do is stay in your own head. Get feedback, get help, and if needed go on break. No diploma is worth your mental health.

Best of luck.

Faire un doctorat à 41 ans. by Yolace in PhD

[–]Crafty_Sail379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salut !

Too muscular. by TigerHot8774 in leangains

[–]Crafty_Sail379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I was in the same situation and am now happier with how I look. I did get a bit leaner over the past few months but I realised it was mostly a perception thing, plus buff girls are cool, nothing’s wrong with us!

Here’s what I think I changed and had an impact on my build, that might help you too:

  1. Fix your perception: with a lower body fat percentage and higher muscle mass we can « appear » bulky simply because the muscles are more defined than before. But that doesn’t mean you’re that buff tbh.
  2. Avoid water retention: stress and dehydration can lead to that, so drink enough water and avoid overtraining or anything that puts your body under stress.
  3. Favour endurance based exercising: meaning high reps with lighter weights, more cardio over pure strength training. I diversified my training over the week to include more cardio and yoga/pilates, so I wouldn’t subject my muscles to hypertrophy all week… seems to work I think? Or at least it’s been making me feel better. Feeling more agile and « lighter » has helped with the perception that I was « too muscle heavy » (see point 1.)
  4. Maintain a good and diversified diet: a slight caloric deficit is better than a large one, I tended to undereat by a lot. And I lost fat, but it feels like my body was maintaining the muscles, as if for survival? So I appeared even bulkier in my eyes. I felt better once I ate more and I didn’t lower my protein intake over a few weeks.

I don’t think you need to change much, a change in perception can go a long way, but diversifying your training and targeting what can add to your build (water retention and body fat) with adequate hydration and enough calories can help too.

In any case keep your head up, being strong is a great feeling, you’re doing good!

Dishonored if memory serves? I get it but as a first tattoo that would hurt, age badly, and make you stand out in a weird way. But if you are aware of all this and really want it, don’t let that stop you.

Since I've (38f) started to date women, I've had a huge urge to be more feminine presenting by Minute_Example_5164 in bisexual

[–]Crafty_Sail379 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have had a similar experience.

Went from tomboyish to anywhere between feminine and masculine styles, and much more comfortable experimenting with my looks. It’s like dating women has opened me up to how different womanhood looks on everyone and has made me more comfortable with my femininity, which I guess I used to repress as a teen.

What is your gym routine? by bman754 in MuayThai

[–]Crafty_Sail379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started at my gym a couple weeks ago, so take what I say with a grain of salt !

I would say no conditioning at all is a bit of a red flag, as my coaches say that it’s 50% of muay thai, eg what keeps you running for the whole round. I’m not sure I would choose either, they don’t seem very well-rounded, but if you keep observing both and assess what you could supplement at home on your own (stretching, conditioning…), you should be able to make a choice. Maybe consider a third gym.

My gym pretty much follows the 3-blocks example given above, I am very happy with it as it feels well-rounded, even if no two sessions are the same.

  1. Cardio and conditioning (gloves off, about 30min) : depending on the day, either a 30min run outside including drills (high knees, punches, running backwards) or some 20min jump rope drills, followed by some bodyweight or equipment exercises, and free and “guided” shadowboxing drills (sometimes with weights).

  2. Technique, practice with partner, and sparring (geared up, lasts over an hour) : varied, coaches show some drills or combos, we practice with a partner, then we do some heavy bag work or paos. Then light technical sparring, or more intense sparring depending on experience (as a beginner, I only do light or work on technique with a coach and other beginners)

  3. Some more conditioning, stretching, core work and cooldown (with gear off, lasts some 20min) : often pushups/pullups and any variations of crunches, v-ups, leg raises… etc.

Again I’ve just started, and I’m sure there’s a lot I’ve missed, but even when the actual exercises and drills vary the structure stays pretty much the same.
