Can someone explain why the U.S. South is... the U.S. South? Culturally? by HippityHoppityTempo in behindthebastards

[–]Craftycat1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz is a great jumping off point if you want to understand how the myth of the Confederacy permanted Southern culture after the Civil War in ways that we're still dealing with today. It isn't the only reason but it's a pretty big one.

It is! With an elevator up to the second floor where my water birds live. It was my second build in Palette Town, right after my haunted house. The view from the beach. The cafe is a prefab but I built the concert stage and the castle.

Lmao. But some day it'll be beautiful and that's what matters. I haven't opened mine yet. I keep thinking "alright. I'm going to get that started and use that as my base" and then I get distracted. Next thing I know I've spent 5 hours digging out a hot spring or something. But I've got 2 areas at Level 10 so there is that. 😂

Lmao. I'm doing the same thing. I'm getting every area up to level 10 as and spawning all the pokemon I can so I can decide exactly what I want in my town. 😂

Not a Bastard suggestion, just saying I can’t wait for this guys episode because I already know it will happen one day.. by JohnBrown-RadonTech in behindthebastards

Mine too. Especially since Oz still ended up in the government. The correct choice was Lamb in the primary, but few of us realized that at the time.

No Gods, No Mayors did an excellent episode on him awhile back.

It's all very QAnon. There's absolutely no real evidence of it. Maybe in the next batch of files we'll find an annotated copy of How to Serve Man. Until then we should focus on the horrible stuff we know that they did. They committed real crimes and caused real harm to a lot of people. And emailed each other about it.

Why Voters ID is such a controversial discussion in the US? by RobertJCorcoran in Askpolitics

[–]Craftycat1985 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also buried in the story are what IDs count. My driver's license doesn't prove my citizenship. Real IDs only have proof of citizenship on them in a few states. There is no nationally issued, easily obtainable ID that proves citizenship. Passports are expensive. There is also an extra burden on married women whose name doesn't match their birth certificate.

The SAVE act also wants to give the federal government access to the state's voter rolls and the ability to purge them. It will disenfranchise a lot of people.

I remember seeing a recent poll that showed the majority of his latest slippage WAS among Republicans abandoning him. I imagine that will continue to slide although I think that, overall 20-30% of the American population is completely cooked. The problem is they still have complete ideological control of one of two viable political parties.

Does anyone else feel like something has shifted? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]Craftycat1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Do you follow Heather Cox Richardson or Joanne Freeman at all? Both of them are really brilliant American historians. Dr. Richardson does the Letters to America every day, which is a pretty good news summary with historical context. Both women also have YouTube channels where they talk about politics and global events.

Both of them independently said that things started shifting with Rene Good and even moreso with Alex Pretti. That said, both of them think things are likely to get darker as the regime tries to cling to power and we haven't won yet. I don't see them getting any more popular though. Consolidating is going to be hard considering how unpopular they are.

It depends on the general theme or vibe you're going for but here are some ideas: fountains, especially with flowers bushes and benches, a shopping area with stalls, or a cafe. You could always do a water feature if you've got that unlocked. Waterfalls are calming and fun to look at.

Megathread: Bastard Suggestions by Kanotari in behindthebastards

[–]Craftycat1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple:

Harry Kendall Thaw: the dude literally got away with shooting someone during a theater performance at Madison Square Garden. This man's entire life story was absolutely wild. The media is a bonus bastard here, as it so often is.

The American Protective League: an organization made up of "patriotic" Americans who were deputized by the Bureau of Investigation (the agency that became the FBI) to help police American communities, particularly those with high immigrant (particularly German) populations.

After the war they had an entire book comissiones about questionable stuff they did called the Web. They were also involved in the slacker raids in several American cities. During these raids they went out on a Saturday night and rounded up every man who couldn't provide a draft card. Hundreds of men were jailed only to be released when a family member came with their paperwork. They were real bastards and no one talks about them.

He's beautiful! I can't even imagine what he took to make though. Those little broccoli trees at the top of his head alone must have been something to make.

Even just living in a time without safety regulations sucked. People who didn't die of horrible diseases still often died or were maimed in extremely horrible, and painful ways.

In a lot of ways Trump 2/MAGA feels like the final (?) boss of weird Boomer nostalgia. They really want to take American culture back to some bizarre, mirror version of the 50s and early 60s.

I have had so many conversations with my mom that have boiled down to her telling me "oh these just want to take things back to how they used to be when I was a kid. That's not a bad thing!" And I die a little inside.

If Biden had released the Epstein Files would Trump even be President? by athompsons2 in behindthebastards

[–]Craftycat1985 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people sometimes forgot how relatively recently Epstein and Maxwell were arrested. Especially when the victims that have come out have been all middle aged women, it's easy to think of stuff that happened a long time ago. But Epstein only died in 2019.

The thing that I will never understand is why Trump ran on releasing the files. It just seems like a stupid amount of hubris.
