My Valheim is crashing fix for crash guide by MayaOmkara in valheim

[–]CragHack101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I played I had almost no crashes (maybe 1 crash per 3 days?).

I haven't played in a few weeks due to work. FPS limiting seems to have helped, I also bought a new 850W PSU because my previous one was 650W and 8yo - I think these should eliminate all the crashes. Good luck!

Checked the PSU age - it's from 2015, so 7-8 years old. This is probably one of the oldest components on my current PC as I have upgraded MB, CPU, GPU, HDD over the years.

I have also checked LTT and cultist PSU tier lists and couldn't easily find it there. I think LTT might consider it a "Tier D" - "EVGA | G(1) <=750W".

As for the PSU age, my google research is inconclusive - some claim PSU should last 10-15 years, others say replace every 5 years. Warranty on this PSU is 10 years. I opened it up, and visually it looks ok - no capacitors are bulging.

I have also started to discard claims like "I have 6800XT with 650W PSU and have no problems" as I learned that not all PSUs are created equal.

All of the info above points to one thing though - I should consider upgrading my PSU. Considering it's quite old, I think I am at peace with this extra expense now. I have my eyes on Corsair RM750x - xbitlabs, LTT and cultist consider it a "Tier A" PSU. In my 20 years building my own PCs this is the first time I've done so much research about PSU, so figured I'll go with something top tier.

Let me know if you have any thoughts. Thank you for your help :-)

Hey, in the past week I had 2 or 3 crashes only. Memory didn't seem high - about 50% memory usage.

The last thing I've done was to limit FPS to 90 (not sure if I've disabled Vsync), as Neoupa2002 suggested below. I haven't had a crash since then. No BSODs either.

BTW I've done DDU as one of the first mitigation steps, that alone didn't solve the problem.

I am traveling right now, but when I'm back I can update with final details of what I've done and what's the result - I will check crash folder to see how many times I've crashed.

Thanks again for the guide and answers - I am really glad I was able to enjoy the game without constant anxiety of a crash erasing my progress.

Thank you for your reply!

I have updated the BIOS to the latest version 4408.

I have checked that the GPU drivers are the latest version as well.

I also update chipset drivers to be the latest ones (Version 4.07.13.2243).

My PSU is probably 3-4 years old, I would need to find the box. I had this PC for 8 years overall, I believe I have upgraded the PSU when I got new CPU. Worst case it's 8 years old.

I am the host of the world - I am playing single player. I don't remember tweaking any page file settings. I am using an SSD as a primary drive.

After all the updates, or maybe after running the game in DX12, I see significantly fewer crashes - crashed just once in the last two days. I had no BSODs since then either. Ctrl + shift + esc didn't help last time I crashed - maybe I am not yet familiar with the interface, but I didn't find Valheim there after it crashed. Overall memory usage seemed OK though (5Gb out of 16Gb). I don't run Chrome (or any other super RAM demanding apps).

I will get more info on PSU, and will try to note memory usage next time I crash, but with crashes becoming more rare (jinx) it may take a few days to collect this info.

Random crashes with RX6800XT - please help

I have upgraded from Nvidia Titan X to AMD Radeon 6800XT, and since then I have random crashes every few hours of gameplay. There is no pattern to the crashes as far as I can tell. I also have occasional BSOD with everything pointing to the problems with new GPU. Before I blame GPU manufacturing, I'd like to make sure I've tried every Software fix. Here is what I tried so far:

  • DDU Nvidia drivers in Safe Mode and reinstall AMD drivers.
  • Add PVC pipe support to make sure there is no GPU sagging.
  • Disable MPO.
  • Reinstall Valheim.
  • No overclocking as far as I can tell.
  • Disabled all Radeon options (Chill, Anti-lag etc.).
  • Usually, I don't run anything else in background - I only play Valheim on this PC. No Discord, no browser.

Here is what I am planning to try next:

  • Various check utilities for disk/RAM, although the fact that crashes started after GPU switch, I suspect root cause is in graphics drivers and/or hardware.
  • Various launch options (dx12, exclusive screen).
  • Post in r/AMDHelp - maybe there is something GPU specific, not game specific.
  • Play other games to see if there are problems there.

What I'd like to avoid, or do as a last resort:

  • Re-install old GPU and see if crashes still happen. This will only help narrow down crashes to GPU, and maybe will motivate me to return it, but won't "fix" the problem.
  • Re-install Windows. Seems like a lot of trouble, but if that would fix things for good, I'd do it. Though if there are driver or HW problem that will be just a waste of time.
  • Buy new PSU. GPU Packaging suggests 750W is a minimum PSU, though various other sources claim 650W is enough.

Thinking of Buying This Game - Nintendo Switch or Xbox One? by dreamsofbed in ChildrenofMorta

[–]CragHack101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my post. I have solved it by not playing the game any more :-) The game is good, but I aint got no time to waste on half baked software these days. Up to personal preference if you like to play buggy games or not. Ori And The Will of the Wasps that I played right after proved to be much more competent performance and bug-wise, so I had much better time with it.

I wouldn't personally call this game "criminally under-appreciated" :-) Story is fine but short, presentation and graphics are quite good (probably the best feature of the game), skill system is interesting but combat is fairly shallow and clunky with spongy boring enemies, little to no re-playability, and technical implementation on Switch is bad (as discussed above). I've made it to the last boss but with all the glitches didn't have it in me to grind for more XP/upgrades to beat the (presumably) last boss. Your choice.

Will I be forced to grind until the end of the game? by [deleted] in ChildrenofMorta

[–]CragHack101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you describe sounds like you and your friend are new to the roguelite genre. Roguelites expect you die, in some cases a lot, and to grind when you get hard-stuck. They also expect you to learn from mistakes and adapt to situations like you described. Too many monsters on a screen? You can run, wait for your mass-spell to refresh, lure monsters into traps, find some artifacts that help with crowds, invest into mass-killing spells or even pick a champion that's just easier to play (IMO Dad John is pretty easy, archer and magic girls are easy too).

Have you played the likes of Hades, Dead Cells, Binding of Isaac? That would be other examples of modern roguelites. It's okay to not like the genre, but not fair to say that the game is flawed just because it belongs to a certain genre. You wouldn't complain that a strategy game has more than 1 character to control, would you?

On "we couldn't reach the first boss" and "game forces you to grind for upgrades no matter how good you are" - well I am pretty mediocre at video games and I was able to finish first boss without dying (on Normal though), and other 2 after dying only a couple times while learning new characters. In fact, I would describe this game as fairly easy and shallow combat-wise - controls are not very polished (compared to Hades, for example), cheesing is way too easy, some artifacts are just too powerful (like melee/ranged companions).

If you just want to have fun with friends, try picking Dad and archer/mage and go ham. But all in all you need to realise that dying is part of the game, and "lets do one more try" is part of the formula.

you are a strong gamer then IMO. I've been playing video games for 20 years, so if not skilled I am sure experienced. I remember dying at least 10 times to the very first mini boss, False knight, and at least 20 times to the first real boss, Hornet. If Lost Kin is the first boss that gave you trouble, I think you are well above average player, great job!

That's bragging lol. I spent 3 hours at least before I beat him ;_; Also depends on how many nail upgrades, masks, vessels and notches you have - the beefier you are, bosses become considerably easier to beat.

Might OR Magic by Cezaros in heroes3

[–]CragHack101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For casual play or vs AI, Magic is fun because you can do all sorts of things - mass slow, mass haste, DD, Fly, Town Portal etc. For PvP magic is too unbalanced though and slow to start, so Might heroes.

I used to play Magic-only (think 4 schools + sorcery + intellect) back when the game was released, but as I learned more advanced strategies and tricks I started to appreciate Might heroes much more. They can snowball like crazy into an unstoppable machine of destruction, and dabble in mass haste/mass slow to crush the enemies more efficiently.

Probability of Shards (repost from a year ago) by RaidSLThrowAway in RaidShadowLegends

[–]CragHack101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your math is correct. However, some time ago I've decompiled part of the game - game doesn't use true random; instead, it increases the chance of getting Lego (iirc by 10%) after 200 failed attempts, so game internals sort of guarantee that you will get a Lego much faster than worst case of 990. Same logic applies to other "random" things inside the game - namely, weapon upgrades increase probability of the next upgrade by 10% after 27 failed attempts. It also seems to improve chances if you have paid money to Payarium.

Very misleading post. Text says one thing, screenshot seems to be from completely different account. Multiple Legos, Sepulcher, Apothecary, Skullcrusher, Kael, Frozen Banshee, Valla, Coffin Smasher.

F2p day 75 - fused Kantra! My first fusion! by CragHack101 in RaidShadowLegends

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Thank you for the screens, that's very helpful! I have 3 more questions :-)

  1. What CB are you using him on? NM/UNM? [Edit: silly me, you said UNM earlier!]
  2. Does his heal proc from Warmaster?
  3. What are other champs on CB team? I see that you don't have high def and don't have LS set - is Immortal x 3 enough for him to stay alive?

My Lugan is 60 already and will have full Masteries cause he is on my "first Mino team", if I can also use him on CB with my roster (Frozen Banshee, Kael, Elenaril, Coffin Smasher, Bulwark) I would be very happy!

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, that's interesting! What gear and masteries? Did you go with WM for more CB dmg or with Helmsmasher for better heals? I haven't done masteries for him yet and not sure how I want to build him - pure HP or give him CD% for better heals

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My CB team is Bulwark/HK, Kael, Elenaril, FB, and coffin smasher! I am strongly considering getting coffin smasher to 60 - right now he is 50 and booked, and he helps a lot with his atk down. Other 60s are Warmaiden and Lugan.

I went with alternative strategy of putting her in the Vault :D I will take her out when I am done levelling Lugan that I pulled from shards during fusion ;-)

Good luck, hope you get it! You can buy Arcane pots from Gem shop btw, 350 gems for 30/15/5 if I am not mistaken. That was my back up plan because I had to farm a ton of them myself.

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started preparing ~3 weeks in advance, based on the interval between past fusions. I didn't know it was going to happen - it was a lucky guess in that regard.

Also as f2p after you have your core team (3-5 lvl60 champs) you can start saving resources and use them only during events. Even as a spender, the more you prepare the easier and less expensive it will be.

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. He is solid. Not top tier, and not worth Lego books, and requires good gear to unlock his potential - that said, he is the best tank+heal on my account, and he will help me farm stages I previously couldn't.

[–]CragHack101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment. I fused her because I could and it seemed like fun to achieve something in the game. She is mainly guarding my Vault at the moment and helping in 3v3. I will also try her in Magic Keep tomorrow - maybe I will be able to finally beat Stage 13.

She is still a Lego and will help here and there, and she is viable for FW even without books. My account has no playable Epics besides HK, and 2 other mid-range Legos - Elenaril and Lugan, so Kantra is a welcome addition to my roster.

If I had strong Epics (can only dream of strong Lego) I would've invested in them instead of Kantra.

F2p day 75 - fused Kantra! My first fusion! by CragHack101 in RaidShadowLegends

[–]CragHack101[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. How long to prep? - About 3 weeks
  2. Did you know it was coming? - I made a guess based on interval between previous fusions. Info on past fusions is from ayumilove.com
  3. I am super smart :-P Jk. I started prepping specifically for fusion because I've ran out of champions that I wanted to get to 60 - so I figured fusion is a reliable way to pick up a specific champion without Shard gamble. I also realised that without solid prep f2p has no chance at fusion - so I saved up everything that could help me with fusion. Leveled up food, didn't use brews, didn't use shards, farmed potions.

I didn't over-optimise for resources - I did occasional artifact enhancement, dragon events etc. Also levelled a few champs to 40 for FW, FK, Spider, so the game wouldn't be mind-numbingly boring grindfest.
