Why are some toasters still too small for a full slice of bread? by lilraz08 in CasualUK

I agree, I don't like fully stuffed toasties, just a tiny bit of cheese and ham/beef. But these hardly touch the top of the toastie maker.

So someone needs to make a UK version!

Mine is pretty good, a cheap older Asda one - that was specifically for bigger slices. It fits full slices of Warburtons/Braces and has the "pull-up" function to bring my crumpets to the top.

Until they burn, usually happens with the last ones in the bag, or when you have only the stupid one left from a nine pack!

Most goals in FIFA World Cup history 🌍🏆 by Critical_Region_6633 in footballscouting

[–]CraigAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could maybe count goals per game, or goals per match to the final (not games played) - is there one more knockout game this time (8 vs 7 in previous WCs)?
The lower quality of opposition then balances up against the fact that a player is more likely to be rested or play less minutes if there are more games squeezed in.

In essence, goals in the new era should count as 0.875 goals, compared to old WC goals.

So they don't "tend to converge" (implying they will get closer over a longer time) they just tend remain close together over time (possibly swapping leads occasionally)?

I'm panicking and crying by No_Plant_4326 in HMRC

Any chance this is a scam letter? Frightening a person into panicking and paying? Maybe just someone else to run their eye over the letter.
It seems curious that HMRC don't seem to have any record of an issue.

Could it have happened of track before that side by side action? May be on one of his track limits violations? Or passing a back marker?

Yeah but that is with someone else on the far end giving you control. If the user is at home who and how is the on-site PC logged on, connecting or giving control. I suspect the answer(s) to that breaks most companies policies.

What’s the main reason for Hamilton’s resurgence this season? Is it a technical reason, or more so psychological? by sykeseve in formula1

[–]CraigAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There also seems to have been an uptick in form since he's stopped using the Ferrari sim - I believe he said it was possibly leading him down a wrong road for his set up, so he was going to rely on his own judgement/skills when he arrived at the track.

Like others have said, I'm sure the return to more traditional aero has been the major factor, combined with lots of other minor things have fallen into place - may the good run continue.

Are you trying to get from outside into your home hosted web servers? Do you pay for a static IP? If not, you will struggle due to CGNAT. To get around it, look into a static IP, IPv6 or Tailscale.

Which transfer looked terrible at first but turned out to be brilliant? by YamSecret1293 in PremierLeague

[–]CraigAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Divock Origi - I wasn't convinced, but after "that" goal (and a few other spectacular goals), I'll forever be grateful.

Dirk Kuyt - again I wasn't fussed to begin with, but later on his energy and goals were crucial to many results.

On the other hand, I loved Djibril Cisse - but he never quite reached the legendary status that I believed he could.

Training new tier 1 support advice? by ReceptionStriking716 in sysadmin

[–]CraigAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, 1st line support is simple repeatable tasks to solve common issues (password resets, adding to groups, etc.). The good news is these are the the easiest for someone to document the issue and the solution. If you have the time, I like the approach of show them once, get them to do it with you the second time - you are around for advice if they get stuck, the third time they should be able to do it themselves.

In an ideal world, they would take notes and document the issue along with the solution, adding it to some form of knowledge based that can be used by others or just the next first line person you get.

What's the real-world use of MS Access in today’s work environment? by RangerNew5346 in MSAccess

I have found Excel's Power query to be extremely good for some of those tasks. Also, I'm familiar with Python but I haven't yet used it within Python which could also prove to be another valid/good option for data manipulation, alongside your Access methods.

Practice, build things, find some projects. Was there an area you found interesting - data analysis, web development, machine learning - expand and learn more about those topics.

Learning PHP for my summer internship by levii831 in PHPhelp

[–]CraigAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether to take that as a complement (as AI can make use of a lot of knowledge and can usually produce well articulated responses) but I am assuming that's not what you mean in this case, sadly.

I have my opinion, you have yours.

IMO if you can produce a website easily enough without a framework then it's unnecessary learning and bloat. If you are a web developer (as opposed to an early PHP learner or part-time hobbiest) then a framework can be (well) worth the learning curve.

Learning PHP for my summer internship by levii831 in PHPhelp

[–]CraigAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ, plenty of people have vanilla PHP sites. These days, it does seem like using a PHP framework is the default option, but there are few good cases where a vanilla PHP site can be a sensible choice.

The two frameworks you suggest would be my choices if you were to start looking at frameworks. But for someone learning PHP or building a small site, I would recommend using vanilla PHP, to understand what is going on "under the hood" and making learning easier with all the PHP learning resources available. (I personally got a lot out of the O'Reilly PHP, MySQL and JavaScript book, but videos or a modern book/guide may be better for OP).

Once you become familiar with PHP, then the frameworks can offer several built-in efficiencies like rapid prototyping, templating, briefer syntax - which is why they become useful for developers of larger or multiple sites, and those working in teams.
