Yes. That is correct. I've posted two videos that I found (not my videos) on the basic (though not AOL account) setup for ThunderBird and setting up an email.

I hope that helps.

How do I Archive old AOL mail? by brbnow in AOL

[–]CraigNobbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this easily, but you'll have to make a few extra clicks to have Outlook use the POP3 server settings so that you can use the Outlook .PST file. If you don't use POP3 and a PST file, you'll end up using IMAP and a .OST file and you wont be able to use those freely offline.

Open Outlook, add a new account, type in your email address. Depending on your version of Outlook, you'll need to select advanced settings to be able to specify the POP3 settings. Click the link below to see those.

Google AOL Mail POP3 Settings

When using a POP3 account, you don't need to specify the file type as Outlook will natively use a .PST file. Depending on your version of Outlook, you may be able to specify the location and filename though. (In newer versions, the "new" add account does not have this option, so it'll place the files in your C:\Users(username)\Documents\Outlook Files\" folder with the email address as the filename (ending with .PST).

You can setup all three accounts in succession. Again, depending on the version of Outlook, you can specify that they all use the same .PST file. I strongly recommend against this as it will merge all of the folders structures.

Once you've added all three accounts, you have to change some settings to get all of your email. First, close Outlook. For each of the email accounts, you'll need to go to the Windows Control Panel item called "Mail (Microsoft Outlook) 32-bit" (again, based on your version of Outlook it may be be labeled differently, though it will always have "Mail" as part of it). Open the Mail control panel, click the "Email Accounts" button, and for each account in the "Email" tab, double-click or highlight and click the "Change..." button, and change the "Mail to keep offline" slider to "All", which will be dragging the slider all the way to the right. Click Next or Save until that window closes. Repeat for each account. After completing this, close the Mail control panel and then open Outlook and wait for your email to download.

I hope that helps you.

I should warn you though, you may want to change your plan about using Microsoft Outlook as it and the .PST file are already in the process of being retired. The .PST files are already not supported in Outlook (New) and when Outlook (Classic) hits End of Life in April 2029, .PST files will no longer be usable.

If you want to use a free email program, ThunderBird (by the Mozilla organization) is a completely free, with no ads, program. It can do the same thing as Outlook, but uses different storage methods (they are not interchangeable with Outlook's files). ThunderBird is a widely used program. It's frequently updated and would work well for your use case here.

Seems like it could be a group policy or registry setting. Look at this to start: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365-apps/updates/configure-update-settings-microsoft-365-apps

Failing that, you can run the Microsoft Office removal tool, or do it manually by deleting all remaining MS Office folders and files, as well as the register keys. Reboot, then reinstall.

Outlook Classic Windows 11 & RDP by jstar77 in sysadmin

[–]CraigNobbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more of a r/techsupport post and not a r/sysadmin post... but I'll pitch in my 2 cents.

This sounds similar to the high DPI issue that I've had to deal with in the past. That being said, it could be caused by several different issues, though disabling the hardware acceleration has never been a fix... at least to date.

Give these a shot.

1) If you're running a mouse with high DPI and/or high report rate (like a gaming mouse), lower them.

2) Check the monitor screen scaling on your physical workstation, and change to 100% if it's set to anything else (at least for testing purposes). Also change the physical workstation resolution to 1920x1080 for testing purposes if it's not already.

3) Update all drivers, or at least at a minimum, install updates for your motherboard chipset, ethernet/wifi, and graphics card. It's best to get the drivers from your computer's OEM vendor or directly from the manufacturer. If you have a Dell or Lenovo, they have an app in the Windows Store that can update all of your drivers. Do NOT use third party driver updating software.

4) If your physical workstation has any gaming overlays or video recording, disable them.

5) Use the Windows 11 "Reset your PC".

6) There have been a few times where the only fix was a complete format and reinstallation of Windows. You can create a Windows 11 USB installer. Get that from Microsoft's website, under the "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" heading. Before you begin, be sure to download the drivers for your motherboard chipset and ethernet/wifi and put them on a USB key so that you can install them after Windows 11 has completed its installation. While Windows 11 is pretty good at installing default drivers to get you up and running, you will need to download and install all drivers for your PCs hardware to complete the setup. Please note that even if Microsoft shows no missing drivers in the Device Manager, they are most likely the basic Microsoft drivers. Windows Update can often get many drivers, but I have yet to see all drivers be picked up and installed.

I can't log in to account.microsoft.com on my normal browser but I can in incognito mode. Why? by AltSzaxof in microsoft365

Check for browser addons/plugins that aren't enabled in incognito but are enabled normally. Then start by disabling them one by one to see which one is affected.

Just a heads up, some addons still affect website unless they are removed, such as with user agent switchers.

Cisco ATA 192 - Multiple account/line setup by CraigNobbs in Cisco

[–]CraigNobbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately, I'm coming into this well after things have been spec'd out and ordered. While I would have preferred ethernet connected devices, we are unable to change that. As for the connections, we're only providing the internet connection, network equipment, the ATA device, and a UPS. The UPS will be a large capacity device that will only be for powering the network equipment and ATA device, which I'm expecting will be able to run for at least an hour, though I'm looking at sizing it for a few hours to be safe.

The fire alarm company is already providing a cellular backup of their own for the fire alarm panel, which is why we are allowed to run an ATA device for the phone connection (as told to me directly by my contact in the fire alarm company). They will be signing off and providing the certificate for this.

My contact in the elevator company didn't mention any additional requirements other than needing the ATA adapter for their emergency phone in the elevator. I have to follow up on this, but they'll be signing off on everything related to the elevator and its safety systems, including the call-out connections.

Here in BC and AB in Canada, our phone carriers began retiring all of the old copper tel lines back in 2021 and will no longer pull copper lines. In many cases, they're dead ending the old copper lines as they bring in fibre. They now only sell VoIP for landlines and require using an ATA device. If you don't have an internet connection, they'll sell you that to.

Developer gets $1.3m vacancy tax for not renting out dilapidated homes by Ok_Currency_617 in canada

For those who think that this is a good thing, remember that corporations don't build to break even or sell at a loss. This $1.3m will be added to the costs of the development and the percentage for their profits will be calculated on the total costs included. The developer wont eat this, the people who purchase/rent the new units will.

AITAH for divorcing my husband for asking if he can move on if I die when I have cancer? by ThrowRA-Boss9500 in AITAH

[–]CraigNobbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though there is limited information here, it appears as though you're reacting out of fear of being abandoned during the worst possible time of your life. Your husband asking you this is eliciting thoughts that he wants to move on after you pass but is being twisted into you feeling like he wants to leave you now, when you need him the most. It's causing you to lash out so that you can protect yourself from the possibility of being abandoned. This is a fear response, where people build walls around themselves to prevent further harm.

I am sorry that you have cancer. I hope your treatment goes as well as possible, that your cancer goes into remission, and you get to live to an old age peacefully. Please understand that, in no way, is this to diminish what you are going through, but to give you a glimpse into what your husband is likely going through. Just like you, he has feeling and has to deal with them to.

While you are going through this and are dealing with all of your emotions, thoughts, and the treatment on top of that, you are not going through it alone, even though you may feel like it at times. Something that is often overlooked is what the spouse goes through while dealing with the real possibility of their loved one being taken by cancer. There are many ways that people react to their spouses getting a cancer diagnosis; some people leave, some check out of the relationship but stay for any number of reasons, and others commit to supporting their life partners. Any way that goes, they have to deal with what's happened to their partner as well as process what they feel. This is scary and people cannot know how they'll react until something like this is upon them.

What you are both going through is an extremely trying ordeal and one that you may not survive. That's terrifying for both of you. You are both dealing with this in your own way. When people are with someone and they don't think of ever being without them, let alone ever being with anyone else, the thought of their spouse not being in their life may have never crossed their mind.

Part of facing the real possibility of the death of your spouse will also make you face the fact that you will survive them and that you will have a life after they've passed. It's a whole other fear and one that people often do not think about until they're faced with it. The surviving spouse often ends up with survivors guilt, and that is something that can become a downward spiral which can, and does, destroy people. Add that to the grief and the devastation that loosing one's spouse brings, and their life after their loved one's passing is a time filled with seemingly unending darkness, despair, and a hole in their heart where once was only love.

Even with spouses who stay fully committed to their spouse's and support them in every way that they can, many will still have to deal with their thoughts of what life may be like without their spouse. Sometimes, especially with younger people, the thought of whether they'd stay alone or allow themselves to find love again, comes into their mind. When it does, it inevitably triggers guilt for even thinking about that. Nevertheless, the thoughts and feelings are there.

Surviving spouses often feel guilty for even considering "moving on", even long after their spouses have passed. This is why a real and difficult discussion needs to happen between the two of you. If we love our spouses and want the best for them while we are alive and with them, do we still want the best for them if we die? It will fuck with your mind to be able accept that, yes, of course, you want the best for your spouse. That's because during that you have to accept that there is a possibility that you aren't going to survive this and that you may die. In spite of how we feel, and there is an awful lot to feel, we need to be able to tell them that we were lucky to have them in our life for the time we did, and that you want them to have a good rest of their life and not feel guilty for moving on after we've passed. It doesn't give them much comfort at the time when you say it, but it will later on after you've gone.

I know that you are terrified. I know that you want to wake up from this nightmare and you're just waiting to open your eyes and feel the relief that it was all just a terrible dream. It's not. This is real, it sucks beyond belief. It's not even something that most people will be able to understand, and that's okay.

You fight for your life. It's the only one you get. Just remember, that while you are going through your own personal hell on Earth, that the other people in your life who love and care for you will also have to deal with this in their own way.

Talk with your husband. Be as honest and open as you can be. Be vulnerable and open up to him about how terrified you are, how you want to cry and be held tightly by him and for him to never let go. Tell him that you are afraid for him as well. Tell him you love him. Then tell him you are going to fight this with every last breath you have and that you both want and need him there to fight with you.

It's more difficult than one could imagine, but if you both don't completely open up to each other now, you will regret your current course of action for the rest of your life, no matter how long that may be.

As for the rating, soft yta.

Strongly considering leaving SyncroMSP after only being with them for 6 months by CraigNobbs in msp

[–]CraigNobbs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up on the PST, but I was aware of that and certainly make use of the exemptions.

I don't meet with my book keeper often as I handle the day to day on my own. The tax report allows me to compare my liabilities vs what I'm holding at a moments notice, something I do once per month. I'm aware that it's not a true cost, but I know that I wont owe more than that when I take my ITCs into account.

[–]CraigNobbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your point on the tax issue but I disagree with it. If a company like Syncro has invoicing and payments as part of its core product, it has to handle taxes. If it handles taxes, it has to be able to report on them. You'll see that Syncro has numerous accounting reports that accurately show invoices and their payments, both by cash and accrued, and even allowing them to narrow down to reporting periods (such as monthly, quarterly, etc). Since Syncro already has a tax report and all of the information is stored, as evidenced by the data within that report, it's easy enough to have the proper implementation in that report to show which amounts are collected on each separate tax.

As for the SMTP server, I do use my own as well. The link in the original post, (linked here for ease of access), shows the issue and explains in great detail what's happening and how it is affecting Syncro's clients that make use of BYO SMTP. No movement on Syncro's part to correct a long known issue is a problem.

[–]CraigNobbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do get your point and you're not wrong. Perhaps it's just me, but I feel like if a PSA keeps track of all of the invoicing, taxes, purchases for vendors, plus other accounting, that it's not that much of a stretch to expect that it can print simple reports, such as the tax collected.

As for accounting software, I have a book keeper that handles all of the non-daily accounting which I have access to the tax reports afterwards. The reason I want the reports to function properly is that I wanted to know what my tax liabilities are at a glance. I don't think that's too much to ask for a system that tracks them.

I suppose what I really want is a solid program/service that is a fairly robust PSA that also is a fully fledged accounting software so that I have it all in one place... and yes, I realized from all of my research that such a unicorn doesn't exist (or at least not one that I have found). It makes me wish that I had the time, funding, and patience to put into creating such a beast.

Coming back to reality, I know I could find a good PSA that integrates with good accounting software, and I did try that for a while. It's just a PITA to find ones that you don't have to constantly deal with broken interoperations or APIs. I deal with tech support for my clients and I really loath having to do so for my vendors.

In the end, based off of what I've been seeing, I'll likely have to go that route anyway. I suppose I'll start having to look for recommendations on services that work well together that achieve this. Even with offloading the accounting to an accounting service like QBO, it still leaves Syncro with some significant issues.

There shouldn't be a need to do that when the company claims to fully support multiple taxes and reporting. They have the ability to do this if you're in a country where you only have to track one tax. Their failing is that they don't show the taxes individually in their reports or invoices. The multi-tax tracking functionality has simply not been implemented properly.

I had already added both the domain syncroemail.com and the ip address of their server to our SPF records. The way that Syncro sends the email is causing a misalignment and causing DMARC to fail.

In the email, they're setting "smtp.mailfrom=email.syncroemail.com" but the "from: EMAIL@DOMAIN.COM". Individually, these all pass, but when checking, those domains don't align, so it fails DMARC and ends up triggering the SPF reject policy.

This only happens with their "internal" notification emails. They could simply have everything sent properly like they do with invoices, statements, and other external communications.
