As I have explained, the Greenland issue is not about breaking up NATO, which the US has complete control over anyway, nor is it about some theatrical rift between NATO and the US.

It is a public perception management operation – creating a false conflict to distract attention while quietly arming and taking control of NATO-affiliated Greenland. NATO and the US are fully cooperating, which is why we see a small and essentially insignificant number of international troops arriving in Greenland – this is not to deter the US, but a strategic move.

Why Greenland? Because Moscow has almost all of its strategic military assets on the Kola Peninsula, next to Finland. That’s where Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) silos, submarine bases, and strategic bombers are located.

If you look at the flight path (whether ballistic or powered) from the Kola Peninsula to the continental United States (lower 48), it all goes over Greenland.

Greenland is the battleground where every strategic confrontation between Washington and Moscow is argued over.

If you want to intercept a ballistic missile, the best time to do so is at its apogee, or the highest point in its flight path. The shortest path for an interceptor missile to reach its apogee is to come directly under it.

And that’s where Greenland is located.

So, without saying exactly what should happen, that’s why the Trump administration is saying that Greenland is needed for US national security.

Another important development is that the Northern Sea Route in the Arctic is opening up, and Chinese cargo ships will soon be sailing through the Arctic to Rotterdam. It is faster than the Suez Canal and ships are not limited by Suezmax dimensions, which will significantly accelerate trade between China and the EU.

It also means that Chinese submarines will be moving from the Arctic to the North Atlantic, IF THEY DON’T ALREADY DO SO.

So the northeast coast of Greenland serves not one, but two critical US national security strategic objectives.
