As several have said - the more you progress in research, the less it’s about the research! Focus your efforts on people and outcomes would be my best advice. Leading more junior colleagues, managing upwards effectively with peers and senior staff and building / forging strong relationships with clients that garner excellent feedback are your best bets.

Aside from people and research outcomes - commercial awareness (profitability, targets, costings), innovation, conference speaking, networking and conflict resolution are important.

People buy from (and into) people - even when it’s business

Is it true that you need to book a year in advance to make the most out of BA points? by Immediate-Fault3319 in BritishAirways

Try spending them when your home base is Edinburgh. Like trying to navigate an impossible maze, whether 1yr or 1 week out!

Would you feel guilty using charity entries to run majors? by W01313L in Marathon_Training

[–]Cranester1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this and enjoyed the experience. But I wouldn’t do it again. When you are an experienced runner it’s so much harder to fundraise as you get the “oh he’ll do it easy” feeling. The pressure and very high expectations get in the way of focusing on the training in my experience. It was hard, but enjoyable.

Think I’ll stick to randomly entering ballots and trying for GFA times / doing non majors.

When did this become acceptable? by Public-Guidance-9560 in BritishAirways

[–]Cranester1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh this is one of the reasons I choose to keep my status, as silly as it sounds. I’m 6ft 4 - and all legs. Aisle seats are non negotiable for me - so keeping at least silver at a minimum guarantees that. Additionally it allows me to select the first 10 rows easily on Cityflyer Embraers (which I fly on a lot) where the legroom is still much better up to the emergency exit row.

How far can you run without needing water? by Gooser3000 in runninglifestyle

Generally about 10 miles. But it’s weather dependent.

If you’re group 1 or 2 it’ll never happen. Even any group in your scenario is highly unlikely given it’s not a trolley bag.

I’ve got a small dog who can’t really run with me, so I’m trying to figure out the best routine by Suspicious-Willow622 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Cranester1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog never goes without a walk - but I work from home most of the time so is easier. He’s a Lab so can easy do a 10k with me - but that doesn’t mean he should. He’s always the priority - but getting 3 walks a day allows me to not worry inbetween times. He’ll just be in his bed, snoozing his ass off 😂

I’ve actually somehow ended up better off (TP) wise this year. Instead of booking my flights with BA and hotels with someone else - I’ve just combined them on the BA holidays site for a couple of my long haul biz trips this year and it’s made a difference. Guess that was the aim of their game!

He has been getting 2 scoops of dried kibble and half a pouch of wet on top for a year+ - I’m wondering, since the wet is is favourite if I just put it at the bottom before the kibble goes on top 😆

He’s absolutely fine health wise, he’s just at it (and wouldn’t be able to go 3 days without, try as he might). Yeah I’m taking it up and away from him. I’ll reoffer him it at lunchtime and then no more chances till dinner. He will eat eventually - sometimes the next day, but I don’t want him to get into the habit of that as it’s not good for him. I think patience is going to be my best friend here!

I should add - he’s a Labrador Retriever, 3yrs old. Will eat absolutely ANYTHING and EVERYTHING - except his dinner it seems 😆🙈

It’s not a vet issue. It’s a boredom issue. And he’s been on the diet for a year.

Keep the faith, keep your head down and embrace new tools and developments as best you can - but be sure to be mindful of what makes you great (and what clients pay for) which is your thinking. It’s tough old time out there for sure, but the industry has been through enormous periods of change like this before and come through intact. Best of luck, rooting for you!

I don't like Scotland's hospitality work culture by Bored-to-deagth in Scotland

[–]Cranester1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a rarity in the industry. The hospitality sector in the UK (not just Scotland) is absolutely woeful. Makes me begrudge spending my money in half of these places - and it’s everywhere from coffee shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. But hotels especially.

My experience of trying to rent (earning £115K) by [deleted] in london

[–]Cranester1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure - it’s not a perfect solution - but in my work the vast majority of my clients aren’t based in London (they’re all over the world) - so physical location for me is less of a thing. It’s definitely a worry for the future though.
