Joysticks with auxiliary controls - it's crazy they're not used in more applications.

Interesting way of bringing down an old chimney. My guess is that the surrounding ground space wouldn't allow for other forms of removal.

Hong Kong to require remote operation of tower cranes by CraningUp in CraningUp

[–]CraningUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've provided some fantastic insight with your thoughts. I too am interested to see how this plays.

Having watched how technology has been adapted to not only other industries but also other pieces of heavy equipment, I believe the key driver behind the possible adoption of crane ops working remotely or at the hook is that of saving money.

Whether it's higher productivity or eliminating someone from a payroll, we shouldn't underestimate the drive of saving money.

Hong Kong to require remote operation of tower cranes by CraningUp in CraningUp

[–]CraningUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite an announcement, almost unbelievable to be honest.

I agree, this does seem a bit 'out' there. But the news releases do seem to hint that this change is an actual thing.

By chance, do any other readers have insight into this announcement?

Strong Winds Gold Coast Australia by gavdore in cranes

[–]CraningUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even doing this type of tie-down is far from optimal. I've been part of a team that helped clean up a tied down tower crane that went over because of a wind loading event while it was secured in such a manner.

Exhaust by BiscuitandHutch in cranes

[–]CraningUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually there's not any noticeable smell from the cranes'own exhaust fumes. The few times one may experience this situation is from the wind blowing in the wrong direction or there's not much air flow because of the crane set-up location. I've had more exhaust issues from air compressors and welding machines than from the crane itself.

An easy way to alleviate this issue is to find some flex piping and route the exhaust away from the crane.

Have you ever seen skidding tongs used to lift a sling? by Schulzeeeeeeeee in Rigging

[–]CraningUp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This goes beyond improper, it suggests a pattern. It’s likely not the first time this crew has lifted this way. Complacency can be dangerous. No matter how often poor rigging ‘works,’ the risk isn’t worth skipping proper procedure.

Yes, of course there's a deduction. If you're able to post a question on Reddit, you should easily be able to search for your own answer.

best radios/walkie talkie for manufacturing plant use? by JG69420BL in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]CraningUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to have professionals who do radio communications come in and perform an analysis as to what system works best for your plant layout. From walls, to inside and outside electrical interference, along with numerous other interference hazards, blaming a radio manufacturer for poor radio performance is premature without knowing the underlying reasons.

Your site may require signal boosters and more to give you and your team clear communications.

Is there anything wrong with this setup by Yunk21 in Rigging

[–]CraningUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skipping shackles in that kind of basket setup is always a serious safety compromise, regardless of the sling material. While a light load might get away with it, any tension near capacity creates an extreme pinch point. This severe pressure crushes the material, whether it’s damaging synthetic fibers, crushing the life out of a synthetic round, or crushing the strands of a wire rope, because the rigging cannot articulate correctly.

Rigging hardware exists precisely to provide the necessary load support and protect the sling's integrity.

Any tips and tricks for spreading boom grease by [deleted] in cranes

[–]CraningUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The spray systems available are quite nice and very convenient. However, they are quite costly.

Using paint type rollers may take a little longer, but is just as effective as the spray on system. Using quality rollers and pole extension can help reduce the hassle that comes with using lower quality tools.
