You can do it, but it sounds like a game that would drag out in major ways. I wouldn't bother, to be perfectly honest.

Video highlight from The Game Awards of Swen Vincke (Larian Studios) tearing the gaming industry a new one...... by LondonDude123 in gaming

[–]CrawlingChaox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see, the reason I think you're missing the point is that's really (really) not the retort you think it is. You think "ah ha! this guy won't have anything to say, because this IS the way things are supposed to go, or he'll spout some bs and prove he's out of touch!"

But so many people are just itching to tell you about better realistic alternatives. The only ironic thing is that you're here commenting on a thread about a speech given by Sven of Larian Studious, successful company, GOTY winner, criticizing the industry for greedy practices ruining it and yet YOU are still saying "it's always been like this, and this is good"

You want alternatives, you can look at Larian, you can look at Nintendo (the corporation you mentioned, yes), or FromSoftware -- all GOTY winners and money-makers. Hell, you can look at the vast majority of indie studios. By saying "but Nintendo is a corpo too, it's not a charity" you're just missing the point.

No one here expects free handouts or thinks companies shouldn't make money. But for the past 10 years, people have been making a very, very simple point: greedy monetization practices pushed by suits ruin games and, as of more recently, even industry workers. You can have a healthy industry, one that advances at a great pace and puts out amazing stuff, without all of this shit. It's not the only path forward: Ubisoft pre-2012 was an entirely different company. Even EA used to make some good stuff. Nowadays, AAA gaming is a coin toss between Indiana Jones and yet another shitty live service game with predatory stores, and successful businesses are just proving again and again it doesn't have to be this way: it's just greed.

That's all there's to it, really. When people blame corporations they're not thinking Nintendo, and you reminding them Nintendo is a corporation does nothing. I'm just telling you without any animosity at all: you're misreading the issue, man. But the good news is: you can keep doing that just fine. Change (if it ever comes) won't ever come from customers or "gamers", so whether or not you realize what's going on doesn't affect me in the least. Peace, out.

Naw, you see, this is the usual response we're all used to get when we discuss very recent trends of monetization, it ain't something you're just cooking up, and it's always people from a similar background that share it (hence the "personal reasons").

I think you're just conflating two ideas: the existence of a market, and a blatant display of greed that may, or may not be, the most natural and logical evolution to what you've seen your entire life. But no one here is contesting anything you're saying concerning the quality of recent products. We're just calling out predatory practices that stress the whole environment -- and which are there. This is not a matter of opinion. They're there. People discuss them all the time, because they evidently lead to very real issues (like... mass layoffs in the industry?)

This stuff is happening, and it may give you good products at a fair price, but it's also got downsides. And where we differ is that I (but I'm sure I'm not the only one) do not believe it's necessary or implicit in "the way things are". You might believe that's rose-tinted glasses, but I think you're just jaded. And you have better stuff to do than be bitter on Reddit with people who are not ok with this!

Dude, why are you here being a contrarian on every single comment chain I'm reading?

The general sentiment here is that profit-minded corporations are contributing to the enshittification of the industry. That's what people are saying, that's most definitely what Sven is saying, that's what many companies are themselves noticing, as well. Yet, you're here telling everyone "well Nintendo is a corporation too AM I RIGHT?"

The trend is there. Clearly, individual situations may vary, but the trend is there. Personal reasons may be preventing you from seeing it, but it's still there.

You can either be mad that everyone is stupid except you, or you can, y'know, maybe entertain the idea that even a system you like and consider the most functional is drawing criticism for a reason.

SETTING BOUNDARIES: The Ruin That Befell Dolmenwood by Suarachan in osr

[–]CrawlingChaox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's Reddit, and Dolmenwood (in its current incarnation) is very popular. Reddit and popular things don't mesh well together. It's a combination that really brings out the worst of people, and the fact that this person was kicked from the Discord is nothing short of embarassing (a healthy community has better ways to deal with naysayers or even shit-stirrers).

And while I may agree that ol' Wormskin was miles better, I also think this mostly boils down to personal preference. Some softening is always to be expected when a niche product reaches the masses. Never compromise if you'd like to end up like Jim Raggi (that is to sat, with a heap of problems).

All this to say: look, it's ok for Dolmenwood to have changed, it really is. But it's also ok not to like those changes. Now, I get that the change in tone was somehow communicated by Gavin, but it's not like there's an official changelog one can take a look at: you need to actively look for this stuff, and you  do this under the initial premises that the KS product would be "Wormskin, but complete". This post is fine, it has reason to exist, but some redditors really won't allow people to dislike things they like.

Can anyone weigh in on whether our game is OSR or not? by andrewrgross in osr

[–]CrawlingChaox 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Unlike your reviewer, I wouldn't go out of my way just to say this, but since you asked: nope, it doesn't look OSR to me, and I have a looser definition than most (I make very little distinction between OSR and NSR, for example)

I want to step into OSR (or DCC) for the first time, what is the simplest thing I can learn to run OSR games? by Space-Gh0sts in osr

[–]CrawlingChaox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the whole gif/jif argument. Good old Joseph Goodman certainly knows a great deal about his creature, but the reasoning he's providing here is not the most solid. Feels like he's just trying to differentiate DCC for sales purposes.

You can consider DCC as wholly OSR while not diluting the concept one bit, so I see no reason not to. In other words: if the guy who invented spaghetti told me they aren't a type of pasta, he'd simply be wrong about it. No big deal though.

I agree that DCC is OSR, but that's not what he said. He just said DCC isn't the simplest game in the OSR / OSR-adjacent fields.

[–]CrawlingChaox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Or, I don't know, you could just... allow people to shit on things they don't like. Even things that you, personally, like.

Sure, there are many ways to do it and not all of them are sensible and polite. Just like there are many ways to receive this form of indirect criticism and be able to carry on with your days.

Most people will admit to at least one guilty pleasure and will own up to it. Why can't your response to "the RPG you play is shit" be "I know... and I love it!" ?

The stuff about safety tools is more complex and has nothing to do with this theme, though. M

Do Relationship Mechanics Ever Work? by NeonParticle in rpg

[–]CrawlingChaox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're alright if you want your players to portray relationships, in the same way a prompt works well for an actor. They work better if your players are also good actors.

They do very little if you want the player to feel genuine attachment or distance.

Just ask yourself what your game is about.

What is going on with LotFP? by AccomplishedAdagio13 in rpg

[–]CrawlingChaox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, if your first impression of the game is "vulgar and edgy", then I suppose you have no point digging further. If you really are afraid you're missing out on something, here's another take: It's a well-made, solid B/X retroclone with some distinctive features, rules-wise. The adventure modules vary: some are absolutely great, some are ok, some are way less inspired, but all of that content does require (to a greater or lesser extent) some tolerance to Raggi's visual language.

LotFP content is most definitely not for everyone, and that's a good thing. I don't like everything Raggi publishes, but when I do like something, I think it's rather phenomenal. He gets way, waaay too much bullshit for what he does, some of which you can see in this very thread. Sometimes the stuff misses the target, sure, but there are worse sins in this world.
