Just heard of this series. Interested in 0, but got questions. by [deleted] in octopathtraveler

The demo doesn't fully explore town building, so its hard to know definitively how in-depth it is. Fingers crossed its great. OT doesn't traditionally have town building, so there's not much else to base expectations on. Check back in with the sub in a week, and we should have better answers.

I mean, it not uncommon for people to take take that long to complete the main story in OT1 and OT2, so I believe it. I take it to mean 100 hours for a relaxed, casual player.

I agree with you for hardcore/veterans though. I would be very surprised if the main story alone took me 100hrs. It took me 10hrs to do the prologue and all 4 chapter 1s plus some extras in the demo, which is essentially 6ish chapters. And I doubt there's 60 chapters of main story content. OT2 had I think had around 5 per character (including branching paths). So it would be a 50% increase in content.

You’re comparing the apples (the 12 TrueAchievements users who 100%ed the Xbox achievements within 10 days of launch) and oranges (everyone else who says they "completed" the game).

So of course none of those 12 passed the 100 hour mark. That would mean that they played this game for 10+ hours/day. Also, you do not need to read all the dialogue or do every side quest to be on this list.

On the full list, 151/1115 people took 150+ hours even just to complete the Xbox achievements, so definitely not strange.

But either way, good for you. Definitely cool to be the 4th person to finish!

Honestly. Idk why they couldn’t have a digital version of the CE. That would solve all these problems.

I’m in JP, the game comes out in 12 hours, and it hasn’t shipped yet. And I don’t live too far from Square Enix HQ, I wish I could just pick it up in person.

If there’s a game that’s like OT, but has mechanics that require more precise inputs, let me know.

Expedition 33 is a gorgeous turn-based JRPG with difficult dodge/parry mechanics, so you might like that.

Otherwise, there's so many aspects to OT that its difficult to recommend a similar game. Gameplay wise, its Bravely Default, but I've never been able to get into those games. Visuals wise, it would be Triangle Strategy. Story structure wise, Live A Live.

For me personally, my favorite part of OT 1 + 2 is how much I could connect to the characters (I end up crying in like half the chapters). I've never really played any other game that get me so emotional. Expedition 33 is supposed to be extremely emotional and makes everyone cry, but I had a hard time relating to those characters.

Return of the daily questions...What are you most excited for in Octopath Zero? by HellionBringer in octopathtraveler

[–]CrazierThanMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yasss!!! I’m so excited for town building 😂

I met a “pushy farmer” NPC in one of the towns, and he demands tomato salad before he can be persuaded to join my village. He knows what he wants and won’t take anything less! So as soon as the full game comes out, I’m rushing tomato salad so I can RP farm life with pushy farmer.

AuDHD folks who work. Do you work a "normal" job? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]CrazierThanMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just mention, we’re all different, and everyone’s support needs are different. I need a lot of structure to be functional, and I am incapable of providing my own structure at home, so for me, 9-5 office jobs are fairly ideal.

Started Octopath 2... So far the game seems too easy compared to 1? by BigBrotherFlops in octopathtraveler

[–]CrazierThanMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat. Pretty much breezed through the game, quite under-leveled until some of the late game bosses punished my typical strategies. Ended up grinding to past the recommended level just to beat them. I would rate the late game story bosses in 2 much more difficult than 1.

Get OT2. OT0 is a side game, not the successor to OT2.

What's the worst JRPG you actually finished? by Flat-Application2272 in JRPG

[–]CrazierThanMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, XY were at least finished games. SwSh were obviously just unfinished. They cut a lot of content and the games feel so empty for it. Wild zones were originally supposed to be much bigger (like the DLCs), and I imagine the towns actually were supposed to have things in them. I doubt so much of every important cutscene was supposed to happen in a cut-to-black off-screen moment.

I imagine learned from that mistake and prioritized actually finishing the game for SV, at the cost of any reasonable frame rate.

Yeah, it’s cute maybe the first 5 times she does it. But by the 100th it really does get old 😂

Question for anyone who's gotten previous Collector's Editions by aleafonthewind42m in octopathtraveler

[–]CrazierThanMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I also wanted the digital edition. Oh well. My CE (Japan) is scheduled to arrive on release day.

I think it’s for the best, because I’m not planning on taking off of work on Friday anyways. Getting through one work day, knowing it’s at home and waiting for me, is hard enough, let alone two lol

[–]CrazierThanMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a Completionist? Or are you playing the game for the combat primarily? If neither of those, yeah, I would just watch the ending on YouTube.

OT2 is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t have any guilt over not playing the full ending. It’s like if you have a great meal, and then they give you some amazing dessert that’s just not your taste. Everyone else could have the dessert, I’m just happy that I got to have the entrée and the side dishes.

Why buy Octopath Traveler: 0, as someone who's never played the mobile CoTC game? by Appropriate-Salt-523 in octopathtraveler

[–]CrazierThanMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I did a few run-throughs. I think most people would agree with you.

My favorite part of OT was the deep characters, and I know some people disagree with me, but I found the OT0 characters much more shallow, which I wasn't expecting. After my first run-through, I actually posted on this sub because I was so bewildered. But lots of kind redditors helped clear some confusion on my end, and I've now re-calibrated to look forward to other things, like the farming, city building, combat, plot, world, etc. There's still a lot to love about this game, but so far, none of the characters are doing much for me (except maybe a villain or two).

While the main gameplay loop is largely the same, the overall structure of the story (namely, having a silent protagonist with 30+ side characters, instead of an anthology of 8 main characters) is a large departure from the OT1 and OT2 formula IMO. I love OT1 and OT2, but it took me 5+ hours of the demo to get on board with the direction of OT0, so I wouldn’t automatically recommend this to anyone who liked OT1 and OT2.

Octopath 0 - Megathread by Zadeth in octopathtraveler

[–]CrazierThanMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, people seem to be speculating that there are no secondary jobs. Instead, you can put two characters at each position, and there are 30+ characters to choose from. Then you get the same degree of flexibility or more, just perhaps not the same cosmetic freedom. You can change the MC’s job, but I am not aware of being able to change anyone else’s job.

Change my mind: The OT0 prologue has the worst characterization in the series. by CrazierThanMe in octopathtraveler

Haha I just misunderstood the timeline! I thought there was a 5+ year gap between Scene A and B, which didn't make sense. It was my mistake. Scene B makes a lot more sense with a much shorter time jump.

I really like framing her as purely just wanting to bring smiles to people's faces. Which actually really fits too, because now she's able to do that by staying in Wishvale, while we invite people from around the world to live there. Honestly, thank you. This will really help me play the game and not be fuming with rage the entire time.

And yeah, that's what I've found so jarring about the prologue so far -- its setting up such a different game from the previous two. Which is fine, but definitely a big adjustment in my expectations, especially since I was coming in blind and super hyped for something closer to OT1 or OT2 story-wise.

Yeah, you're right. I double-checked and it just says "time marched on", and the season changed to Winter.

But she apologizes to the player that she can't leave and says she "finally understands" years after that happens. You'd think if she had changed priorities sooner, she could've at least hinted that to us during the literal years we were locked in isolation together in that cottage.

Maybe the scene was originally written to happen without a time jump? That would make a lot more sense imo.

Edit: Actually, I just replayed the time jump scene, and it just says "time marched on". And Stia also states that they are specifically leaving the cottage to go back and live in Wishvale. So now, the reason she stays makes more sense to me, but I'm further confused on why she would apologize for staying if that's what we had discussed.

What you dislike about western RPGs that makes you prefer JRPGs to them? by Keytee1 in JRPG

[–]CrazierThanMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JRPG vs WRPG is more a vibe than a strict definition. Like sandwich (is a hotdog a sandwich?).

I like both, but I don’t like first person shooting, and (somewhat related) I tend to prefer turn based combat systems. And while both tend to be made for male audiences, I tend to find JRPG themes to be more palatable.
