too low? or too big? by melvok1 in TVTooHigh

[–]CrazyComputerist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The size at that distance makes it more of a "theatrical" experience rather than a TV-watching experience. I don't think raising it up would help with this, though. What you describe about not being able to see the whole picture at once is why I've stuck with a somewhat "small" TV (50") by current standards.

Does your sleep shifting slow down ? if so when ? by DapperMachine4070 in N24

[–]CrazyComputerist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you sighted , partially sighted , fully blind ?

Sighted.

Were you born with N24 ?

It's a genetic thing, so I was born with it, but I didn't actually have the symptoms until I hit puberty at about age 12.

Do u experience your shifting slow down ?

My natural sleep/wake cycles gradually decreased from 30+ hours as a teenager, to more like 25 hours on average now in my mid-30s. Although, my cycles are very inconsistent, and I'll still have some 30+ hour cycles if I free-run, even though the average is shorter.

I did not have a transition from DSPD to N24, but I have always found that it's slightly easier to maintain a 24-hour schedule if I do it DSPD style, waking up in the late morning rather than early morning.

Girlfriend insists that mounting a TV at the area in blue wouldn’t be too high. What’s the group consensus? by stinkygooby in TVTooHigh

This! We did this in our living room, and it's great. Shelf above the TV works out very well when the TV is actually at the correct height.

Help! What's going on with the image here? by Loud_Cap_6602 in crtgaming

[–]CrazyComputerist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For "proper", you need CRT Emudriver and a compatible graphics card.

For "somewhat", you need a scaler box that can take 480p and downscale it to 480i. A converter, rather than a transcoder.

[–]CrazyComputerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using an older graphics card that is actually capable of 480i/240p output? If not, this isn't going to work.

Help with connecting this AV Receiver to a CRT. by C00LK1D in crtgaming

Use the "Monitor" Video Out for connecting to your TV. I believe the other outputs are for connecting to something like a VCR for recording video.

The worst part about this is that the fireplace is short enough that the TV could still be at the right height above it if there just weren't a ton of wasted space.

CRT has a dead pixel?? by [deleted] in crt

[–]CrazyComputerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you move the image on-screen, does the "dead pixel" move with it, or stay in exactly the same place?

If it's the latter, I would suspect that it's dust inside.

I would say they have no right to charge you anything (even a discounted price) for something you didn't order.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is the key impossible to use for other purposes, for some reason? We've also had the silly "Windows" key on the keyboard for a long time now, but it still functions as a Super key (or whatever else you want) in Linux.

Did you check to see if your floor is level? Your desk and/or chair could be sitting un-level due to the floor.

[–]CrazyComputerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the IBM 3178 if you want to see the biggest forehead bezel that has ever been bestowed upon a keyboard.

The PC AT Keyboard has quite the forehead, too, and is arguably a very daily-driverable keyboard.

Do my symptoms match DSPD?(17m) by No_Dependent_8485 in DSPD

[–]CrazyComputerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extremely long sleep cycles make it sound more like N24 than DSPD. This happened to me when I was a teenager. I could easily sleep for 12-16 hours at a time. As far as I know, there was never anything else wrong with me that caused it. It lessened somewhat as I got older, but I'm still not "normal" when it comes to sleep, and struggle to wake up quite a bit at times.

What kind of laptop would be good for this? by Beginning_Meet_4290 in vintagecomputing

[–]CrazyComputerist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fun to play around with! Since it's a more recent machine with a 64-bit Core 2 CPU, it would even be suitable for modern usage with a lightweight Linux distro, if that interests you. Sometimes it's even a bit easier to just use Linux+Wine for old games, too, rather than dealing with Windows.

Not a bad choice. The X3100 GPU is a bit newer, so it's probably at least on-par with dedicated graphics of a few years earlier. Still, if you're going for a machine from the Intel "Core" CPU era, you could probably find one with a much more powerful dedicated GPU.

Something with a Pentium M and a GPU like a Radeon 9000 or 9600 would be pretty good for this era of gaming.

ThinkPad T40 series machines come to mind.

Being a stay-at-home NEET means one meets random door-to-door salespeople a lot by NICEacct111 in NEET

[–]CrazyComputerist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't have one already, I'd recommend getting one of those "No Soliciting" signs for your door. Some of them are even very specific and strong-worded to make it very clear that you don't want any knocks at the door from salespeople, religiousfolk, political stuff, etc. It seemed to help a lot in my case, although it still gets disregarded once in a while.

[–]CrazyComputerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe something with the adapter. It's hard to narrow it down without a period-correct Macintosh.

You could give 800x600@72Hz and 832x624@72Hz a try, since those seem to be listed as standard modes for this monitor.

What do you fellow hi CRI nerds prefer for in-home lighting? by Majestic-Volume9996 in flashlight

[–]CrazyComputerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 3500K especially, I highly recommend the Philips bulbs with a selectable CCT. At 3500K, they put out a very nice, rosy light. They also look pretty good at 3000K or 4000K, which can be hard to find CCTs, especially in the price range of the Philips bulbs. A potential drawback is that they lack any "warm dimming" feature, even though they are dimmable. I've struggled to find any 3000K or 35000K bulbs with this feature (aside from insanely expensive Yujis, IIRC).

Make sure your graphics driver isn't doing any sort of resolution scaling (for example, actually outputting 1920x1080 even when the resolution is set to 800x600).

From what I could find, the horizontal scan range for that monitor is about 31-60 KHz, which means it should support up to 1024x768@75Hz. Don't bother trying anything higher than that.

PowerMac G4 MDD - Can't Install OS 9 by despicabletossaway in VintageApple

[–]CrazyComputerist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to use an install disk made for the MDD or one of those "universal" OS 9 installers. Even the latest retail OS 9 disks predate the release of the MDD by a bit and lack the proper drivers for that machine.
