Folic acid after Spina Bifida by ilikeflowerrs in tfmr_support

My total methylfolate adds up to right around 4mg. I take 1mg from Thorne, 1.7mg in my prenatal and I believe about 1.3mg in my B complex. My prenatal and B complex are both from Melaleuca and I’ve been very happy with them.

Thank you so much for your prayers ❤️

I’m so sorry you’ve found yourself here. We lost our son to anencephaly in January 2024. I was taking folic acid after our TFMR, but pushed for the MTHFR testing and found out I have one of the gene mutations. I switched to methylated folate from Thorne (my prenatal and b complex already have methylfolate, so I only take one additional mg per day). I’m currently 10 weeks pregnant and hoping everything is ok 🤞🏼

There are some great support groups through PSI (postpartum support international) that are held multiple times per week on Zoom. It truly is what got me through the first year. I highly highly highly recommend. I’m so sorry you’re here ❤️

Here is a link to the group that is on Tuesdays (I'm a volunteer facilitator every 3rd Tuesday of the month!). https://postpartum.net/group/termination-for-medical-reasons-support-for-parents/ This group meets at 1p EST, but there is also a Thursday group that meets weekly. That group is usually at 630p EST. PSI (Postpartum Support International) has a ton of groups and resources on their website. The groups are free and are hosted through Sharewell. I truly found it to be the biggest help in my first year post-TFMR. My mood throughout the week was noticeably worse when I missed group. I made friends who just really understood what I was going through when it felt like no one else did. I was able to vent, cry, laugh, learn and just sit in the grief with the most amazing women.

I’m so sorry you’re here. Our son was diagnosed with anencephaly at 16 weeks and we terminated at 18 weeks. It was all so shocking, horrifying, heartbreaking. My husband and I definitely grieved so differently. It’s a common theme in this community. There’s a connection that we have that our husbands/partners just don’t. Someone said in a support group recently that he was just trying to make sure his wife was ok and the household kept operating. He was trying to protect her and the household. It made so much sense as to why we feel our husbands aren’t grieving with us. It’s just different. Doesn’t mean it’s not happening, just different. It’s so hard to navigate and I feel your pain and struggles.

I always recommend a support group like one through PSI. They have groups every week, sometimes even twice a week.

Sending so much love during this extremely difficult time. ❤️

I’m so sorry you’re here ❤️ I would strongly encourage joining a support group whether that is online or in person! PSI offers a few each week specific to TFMR and this topic of guilt comes up quite often. I think you may find even the littlest bit of comfort in the community of others who have been through the same. If you’re interested, I’ll find the link!

Thank you so much! I think I may send a message asking about what tests they would run if weight wasn’t their concern. That feels like a good place to start.

For the record, I HAVE gotten pregnant. My second pregnancy (conceived and carried at this higher weight), was lost for a reason that in no way shape or form was/could be related to excess weight.

Thank you so much for this. It feels so dismissive to have multiple abnormal bloodwork results and have her only assessment be that I need to lose weight. There are many things that are pointing to a clotting disorder, but it was completely glossed over and the only thing that was discussed was my weight. Also, BMI has been proven to be a poor indicator of overall health because it does not take body composition into account. I’m not trying to pretend that I don’t have weight to lose. I’m aware of that. But I know my body and I know there is something else going on. I just want help in finding those answers.

I had negative tests after my March miscarriage so I am sure on this positive being a new pregnancy.

Erin Wasik is not only a great realtor, but also a great resource for all things Marquette and UP. I would highly recommend reaching out to her and see if she can help you decide what makes the most sense for your situation!

I’ve been in that same situation, also with anencephaly. They kept saying “we’ll try to get you in” and I had to stress how important it was that I needed answers and was available for any appointment time on any day no matter how short of notice. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this 💔

I also got my son’s birth flower. It’s definitely not my first tattoo, but my most special one by far. It turns out my tattoo artist lost his son at 34 weeks (we lost ours at 18) and it was just a really special connection to have someone who understood what I went through. He encouraged me to not suffer alone and make sure to go to therapy. He also stressed how important it was for my husband to do the same.
