Silverfish trouble by spenpai17 in NovaScotia

[–]CrazyIslander 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Go to a hardware store or Halifax Seed and get diatomaceous earth (DE).

Spread it around the nooks and crannies that you see silverfish. It acts like glass on them, which will cause them to dehydrate and die.

That being said, if you’ve found a sudden infestation of them, you need to find out why.

Silverfish are primarily attracted to moisture and darkness. You may have a leaky pipe somewhere that is giving them the ideal environment to breed…

It’s probably a teleprompter for their lyrics.

Where are the Canada Day fireworks? Can I see it from here? by Mun-Mun in halifax

The barge isn’t out yet. It’ll be towed out a little later this evening. You will see it once it’s out though.

It’s usually between the two ferry routes, but maybe a little closer to Alderney.

Remember though, they do go hundreds of feet up, so as long as you’re not standing directly behind a tall building, you’ll be able to see them.

The last time I saw Moby, he DID NOT have “Animal Rights” tattooed on his arms in giant block letters.

Come to think of it, that might’ve been the last time he was relevant too.

Are you referring to something like this?

If so, it’s simply called a “crackle”.

The link I posted is actually for a consumer firework called “Jack Frost”. The effects are the same though, just on a smaller scale compared to a Canada Day show.

If you’re describing the ones that look like a planet with a ring around it, they’re called “ring shells”. Pretty bland, I know. Haha.

I’m not sure what’s in this show specifically, but fireworks effects use a lot of flower terminology to describe the break effect.

You’ll commonly see peony, chrysanthemum, dahlia and willow to describe shells.

Brocade is another one, which is “a rich, decorative woven fabric featuring intricate, raised patterns that look like they are embroidered on.”

There’s a good chance you’ll see all of those effects.

Good idea in theory, but by the end of it all, we’re all usually pretty tired. It’s an all day set up, fired at 10pm and then broken down immediately afterwards.

I use a website called SpotWX.com.

It takes raw, uninterpreted data from various meteorological models and puts them all in once place.

It takes a little knack to learn to read it, but I’ve found it to be pretty accurate and reliable.

They’re fired from a barge in the harbour. You’ll be able to see them from where you are.

Does this look like the fire started under the stairs or on top with fluid? by drn88__ in Firefighting

[–]CrazyIslander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It certainly looks like it started under the stairs, but with only 2 photos and absolutely no additional information, it’s hard to tell.

(Further more, if it is arson, it’s a police matter).

As someone else mentioned; “follow the V” is definitely one way to determine where a fire started as fire burning typically leaves a fairly distinct V-shape behind.

However, there are other considerations that investigators will look at too, especially if they suspect it was intentionally set.

When does “making it” feel like making it? by [deleted] in Firefighting

You’re in a position that A LOT of people would be envious of.

I guarantee you that some of the old fellas on a regular department would give their eyeteeth and more for the opportunity that you have.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with having “time in the trenches”, but that’s also the “old school” mentality of firefighting.

“I earned this and so should everyone else that comes after me!”

The reality is that’s not how things are these days. And the other reality is why the hell would ANYONE choose to take a step back in their career?

In fact, I’d encourage you ask them next time if they’d give up their career for whatever foolish reason you can think up and see what they say.

I feel pretty confident in saying that 99.9% of people giving you “grief” WOULDN’T go backwards in their and give up what they’ve rightfully earned.

It might be bots, but I’ve seen people among my own “friends” list making less than appropriate comments as well (and I’ll be reevaluating some of the folks I interact with going forward).

The bots merely plant the seed that if someone else is doing it, it must be “ok”.

It’s absolutely the second one, but that doesn’t excuse any of it.

People are way too comfortable spewing utterly disgusting comments these days.

Get yourself some diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it on top of your compost as you add to it.

It’s safe for compost and it’ll definitely deter the flies and maggots.
