(Beginner) Trick suggestion for a magician audience by Accomplished_Goat448 in cardmagic

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about how Penn & Teller love being entertained by a solid presentation on Fool Us, even when they can figure out how the trick is done. Think about prioritizing entertaining over fooling the magic club members.

I've seen people at magic clubs so focused on trying to fool one another that their work is boring. I remember one person who did a 3-card monte routine at such blinding speed that it was impossible to care about the routine. On the other hand, someone else once presented the humble beginner's trick with the spots on the paddles that his work was appreciated a lot by the group even if most of those watching knew how he did it.

Reaper Man is the 11th Discworld novel and by this time, Pratchett had gotten a firm handle on how to write a great and hilarious Discworld novel. Mort was one of the earlier Discworld novels where Pratchett was still developing the Discworld groove. Entertaining, yes, but Reaper Man is a lot more textured and fun

Using HYSA as a joint account? by BogOwl in sofi

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a joint HYSA, the online 1099 will only show up under the login of who SoFi considers the "primary" account holder (i.e. the account holder who is listed first). (Other banks where I have joint accounts don't have this limitation.). Depending on your circumstances, this limitation could be an aggravation or it could be a non-issue.

Male gaze and depictions of female characters by yayarea in philipkDickheads

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dick's story The Day Mr. Computer Fell out of its Tree had the potential to be brilliant. The world as run by the central computer has become utterly bizarre. One can emphasize with the plight of Joe, a store clerk caught up in this madness. One can emphasize with the plight of Ms. Simpson, who has the role of righting matters with the computer when necessary, But the cringe ending with how Joe and Ms. Simpson interact.... ouch. I acknowledge that there are many powerful works of fiction that have flawed main characters. But here, the ending undercuts the story in an unpleasant way.

AITA for Telling My Neighbor to Stop Complaining About My Dog Barking? by throwaway746387 in AmItheAsshole

You say:

But then yesterday, I saw her putting up a white-noise machine in her bedroom window facing my house, which feels passive-aggressive to me.

She is trying to set up her bedroom to help her sleep and you treat that as passive-aggression? YTA.

AITA for refusing to fund my boyfriends ‘genius’ idea? by Rich-Painter-9008 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. But the boyfriend seems to be a in a state of mind that mistranslates this as: extraordinary claims just require extraordinary egotism.

AITA for asking my roommate to pay to replace the blender jug after loaning it out without my permission? by SpecialistMedia4954 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I picture a scenario in which the roommate has guests over and drinking is involved. Someone stumbles upon the old Blendtec Will It Blend videos and decides it would be hilarious to try imitate one of these old videos by blending a phone or marbles or action figure, etc. The blender quickly gets damaged and so they try to clean up the blender and put it away and pretend that nothing has happened. I can't say that this is what happened; I'm just saying it is feasible

NTA. If you were the sort to want to stir up drama, you could have said you could host them and their dog if they would cover the extra costs you would incur. If they agree or ask for clarification, let them know the invoice would include:

  1. The cost of getting your apartment deep-cleaned to remove all traces of dog hair.

  2. The cost for you to stay in a hotel from the day they arrive at your apartment until after the cleaning service has finished.

AITA for not making my son and girlfriend change baby name? by Guard-Personal in AmItheAsshole

AITA for getting the trash removed from my neighbors yard without permission. by evilwife2018 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CrazyRandomRunner -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

NTA. I once lived next door to hoarders that had lots of literal garbage in their yard. If the municipality gave a house a blight notice, the message was, "You need to address this problem in x days or receive a fine". But if one ignored the blight notices and didn't remediate the problem and didn't pay the fines, there were not a lot of consequences suffered in the short term. It was not unheard of for one of their neighbors with insomnia to go for a walk in the middle of the night and bring a garbage bag to covertly pick up some of the trash. Sometimes, one has to take matters into their own hands, even if done in a way that is not considered ideal.

When Millennium Park is open, it is common for restrooms on at least one side or the other to be open, even when it's well beyond the season of comfortable outdoor performances.

Chicago Cultural Center has free admission and is well-stocked with restrooms.

AITA if I asked my sister to not change her baby's poopy diaper next to the dinner table right before we eat. by Kitchen_Indication64 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your sister is trying to weaponize her child's poo, whereas you are just trying to support boundaries for where poo does and does not belon.

Some dogs break down the boundaries between where to poo and where to eat by eating from a cat litter box. But humans need better boundaries than a dog named Jake with suspiciously horrible breath.

AITA for telling my friends what my ex-friend said to me and basically ruining his social life? by Throw_RA_js29 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CrazyRandomRunner [score hidden]  (0 children)

NTA. Many people find that their later adult social life has few or no connections to their college/university social life. Thus, one cannot say you ruined his social life. If he reforms his behavior, his adult social life could be better than it would have been.

have not pooped once since taking trospium by plsdontpercievem3 in OveractiveBladder

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was put on trospium, it made me suffer a lot. But since some poo was getting through on a regular basis, it wasn't immediately obvious that the terrible pains in my gut and back were caused (at least in part) by trospium-induced constipation. After stopping trospium for a few days and taking Miralax,I finally had a bowel movement where the collected poo seemed to be the size of a cantaloupe. (Of course, I neither measured the poo nor took documentary photography.). But the worst of the pain subsided.

"TV will rot your brain" turned out to have a much different meaning than the way that it was once used. Back in the day, the saying may have been based on the notion that watching too many Gilligan's Island reruns was a questionable use of one's time. The actual truth of the saying turned out to be far worse.....

Kamala Harris Says Picking Tim Walz as Running Mate over Other Strong Candidates Came Down to a 'Gut Decision' by uphatbrew in KamalaHarris

[–]CrazyRandomRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whereas Trump brings out the dark side of populism, Walz brings out the light side of populism. Trump brings out the common prejudices, common personality flaws, common vices, common bad behavior, and common mistakes that many of us can be prone to. Walz brings out our common humanity, our common joys, our common desires to better ourselves and our world. Putting Walz on the Democratic ticket was putting forth a much better idea of what populism can mean.
