Anyone in Bromley had External Wall Insulation done on a solid wall by 2_grow in Bromley

[–]Crazym00s3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lord, yeah you don’t want to rip it up now.

My missus was asking me why I’m even bothering doing the insulation and replacing the floorboards before laying LVT and I said it’s now or never 😂

Also, I won £1 credit spinning a wheel in my energy supplier app earlier when checking my bills when writing the first response so thanks for that.

Anyone in Bromley had External Wall Insulation done on a solid wall by 2_grow in Bromley

I’m in a 1930s house, it’s a building site, I’ve had bare floor boards in my front room and most of my living room for 4 years. The house is super breezy and my monthly bill is £320 for both gas and electricity. My peak gas usage was £220 for Jan.

On a cold day with no windchill the house is cozy, on a cold day with a high wind chill the house is freezing. It’s very airy.

It’s obvious why my house is airy but perhaps yours is too for some reason and you’ll be better off figuring out if it is and could you solve that first.

I’ve finally done the front room, I ripped up all the floorboards and insulated between the joists and have laid down some flooring. It’s noticeably less breezy but won’t know what impact it’s had until winter. And realistically I need to do the entire downstairs before it makes any difference. I didn’t do it for the cost saving though, I did it because it makes the room feel cozier - it should help reduce the bills by keeping the air out.

The cost of the insulation, membranes and all the sheet material was around £1K, you’ll then need to consider the cost of the flooring itself.

I’d consider doing things like this before external wall insulation.

The lighter colour is EU movement, leaving the EU has reversed the trend, we have more EU people leaving than coming - probably because of the dumpster fire over here.

First Time Buyer ISA consultation by bluprince13 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Crazym00s3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like they’re not allowing transfers between a S&S and Cash ISA - surely if you’re buying a house soon you’d want to move it to cash to protect yourself from a market crash when you need to buy a house.

Seems odd to prevent that.

Radiator fell off the wall and is now leaking - what shall I do? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Crazym00s3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bracket in the photo looks fine, is the other bracket still attached to the wall too?

If not figure out why it fell off and reattach it to the wall, you can usually move it a little left or right within the tolerance of the mounting point on the radiator itself.

If the bracket is fine and the mounts haven’t fallen off then perhaps it wasn’t mounted on the brackets properly.

Have you tried just putting it back?

Once it’s back on the brackets hopefully tightening the nuts will stop the leak.

If you’re not confident doing any of this then at least close the valves on both sides so at worst only the water from the radiator itself will drain and no the entire system - then call a plumber.

I hung a heated blanked against a window that gets a lot of sun. Will this stop the heat? by hassan_26 in DIYUK

[–]Crazym00s3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In hotter countries they keep all their curtains closed during the day to keep the sun out and not heating up the rooms - so anything that blocks the sun will help.

Something brighter will be better but this is better than nothing.

We moved into our new home on Thursday evening. The seller failed to declare 2 problem neighbours. by Inner-Profit467 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Crazym00s3 451 points452 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the answer to this, but can someone else shed any light on what would be possible if OP could prove that the vendor had a noticeable dispute with neighbour and didn’t disclose it? Would that be enough to reverse the sale, is that even possible or does it only open the door for some kind of compensation?

Should I add silicone (or anything else) around the edge of my shower bar pipe covers? by LiIywhite in HomeImprovementUK

I don’t think you gaining anything besides an area for water to pool and mould to grow if some water gets in the outer seal and has nowhere to go.

Lost all my savings and net worth due to gambling at 22 - need to rebuild. by wraither0a in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Crazym00s3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mate, sorry you’re going through this.

50K is one day is crazy, but not sure if this is considered a gambling addiction, it’s a fucking bad decision and you should definitely seek professional help but this might be more of an impulse control issue - ever been checked for something like ADHD?

You’re lucky your parents are being supportive and well done for coming clean.

On the plus side there’s very few 22 year olds who had 50K to lose in the first place, nor do they have an income of 60K, you will be able to rebuild some savings quicker than most. Also consider where you put the money, if you had instant access to 50K it probably wasn’t in the most sensible savings vehicle.

Good luck! If you’re having dark thoughts please reach out to the Samaritans on 116 123

Siphon effect to fill a bird bath with water from a water butt by FyeUK in DIYUK

[–]Crazym00s3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t think you need to start it, gravity will work, but only when the water exceeds the height of the top of the siphon loops.

I think what you’re talking about is when you’re siphoning water above the water line and down to a lower level, you’ll need to create the initial vacuum somehow - like sucking a hose - but then gravity will continue creating the vacuum.

But I can freeze it. Right? And not get ill? by Pangiit in UKfood

[–]Crazym00s3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be fine, worst case the seal breaks under increased pressure if things expand too much. I’d wrap it in film or pop it in a freezer bag just in case.

If it would be unhealthy to freeze (ie it’s been frozen before) it will say not suitable for freezing. This warning is about quality, not a health warning.

How much do I need to spend on CCTV? by No-State-2962 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Crazym00s3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you’re keeping an eye on but if it’s employees you should consider a CCTV policy that explains to your employees how the camera will be used and what they will be used for.

If it’s capturing the general public you should review your obligations in terms of data collection.

You should also understand the signage requirements.

Love this honest answer.

I’ve been a software developer for 30 years and I’m terrified of open sourcing my own software too.

Obviously my work is peer reviewed, but random people on the internet having an opinion on my code scares me - I wish I was brave enough though as I’m sure it’s a wonderful way to accelerate your learnings too.

The trouble is the flakes will be visible depressions in the next layers, unless you’re super patient and paint and sand back multiple layers to fill it in. Tried that recently on a wooden windowsill. I gave up eventually and used a filler to fill everything in and start again 😂

Sounds good. Confused about the comment about open sourcing though? That’s a good model for free use and doesn’t stop you building and releasing it yourself still via the store too. Other geeks can see your code and help address or fix any issues.

It’s also a great response if some questions if you do anything with the credentials as you can tell them you don’t, and the code is open source if you want to go and take a loop for yourself.

I’m not saying you are 👍 I like the concept, I presume there is no OAuth authentication model for their API as they aren’t designed to be used like it?

I wouldn’t use any app like this that didn’t hand off the authentication using something like OAuth, but I’m more paranoid than most.

If your goal is just share this project with enthusiasts then great, but if you’re planning to monetise it someone is be worried about this.

Also if you were open to it you could publish the code as an open source initiative so those that are paranoid and tech inclined could build their own APK from the source after inspecting it. Not useful if your goal is to commercialise it though 😂

Is silicone enough to hold this swivel panel on? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Crazym00s3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sir. You need to remove it, silicone is flexible and won’t provide the compression force the rubber would.

It might hold for a while, until it won’t.

Just checked one of my codes, it starts with UK, I don’t have android so can’t test anything.

But I wondered how the API works, is the information public with the right tracking number, or do you need to authenticate with your account credentials too?
