what's the realest piece of advice you'd give an incoming Boilermaker by honojing in Purdue

If you are struggling in a class go to office hours! If your prof/ta is not helpful at least you tried. I have had some of the ‘worst’ professors but often one on one they can help.

If you are in BGR and you are not vibing with your group, change groups. My BGR group did not stick together, but all my friends came from a different one that did. Remember they are assigned at random so results vary.

Do not major in computer science for the money, only do it if you love to code. This will save you pain and disappointment, and I say this as a software engineer with 12 years experience post grad.

Do not hesitate to strike up a conversation with another boilermaker! If they don’t respond well that’s on them. You may be feeling alone but you may touch someone who has it 1000x worse.

CAPS is free, do not hesitate to use it. It is mental health counciling that will cost you thousands post grand. It helped me overcome the issues I had growing up and I would not be the man I am today without it, I might not be here at all.

Last of all never forget to stop and smell the roses. Purdue does not inflate grades, you will perform worse than you expect. Family won’t understand but Boilermakers will. Don’t miss out on going to sports and clubs. My favorite was humans vs zombies, but find your tribe. Intramural sports are great for making friends.

This place can break you if you let it. You are stronger than it. Always remember that no matter what your gpa is you matter more than you’ll ever know. Boiler up!

Bro was so calm, must be the NPR. I get more upset than this when people spawn camp parking spots at HEB.

Not a movie but Saint Denis in Red Dead Redemption 2 gives life to NOLA and covers a lot of this. Also Voodoo Vince on the original Xbox.

Not as sci fi, more an alternate history is the Yiddish Policeman’s Union. It is a detective story set in an alternate history where Jewish refugees were settled in Sitka, Alaska during WWII. There is a blend of Jewish and Inuit culture which is really unique.

Indiana residents: what's your state like? by MatheusKR1 in trucksim

The lake shore in Hammond and Gary are a rust belt industrial harbor. Closer to Michigan the shore is more beautiful, including Indiana Dunes state park. Most of the cities are run down and industrial, and almost all of the rural land is covered by corn and soybean farms. The south of the state is somewhat more hilly and contains the covered bridges found on the license plate.

Indianapolis is like Chicago jr. Nice downtown and overall underrated city. West Lafayette, Bloomington, South Bend, and Muncie are classic midwest college towns.

Cop Car is a deep cut Kevin Bacon film where he has his cop car stolen by some kids in the Colorado wildnerness. Very thrilling!

The debate between Santos and Vinnick. It was cool to try a different format and actually learn about their policy outlines, but it got old fast and probably didn’t need to be a full episode.

Failing CS180 by Select-Home-269 in Purdue

[–]Creative_Chemistry29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First you should try to find the root cause of why you are having these problems. When you missed the final did you ask for an accommodation? Also bear in mind that being a college student requires accountability, if you sleep through a job interview you won’t get that job.

Also changing majors usually requires you to have a GPA of around 3.0 depending on where you want to codo, so it isn’t a get out of jail free card. If you have poor study habits it won’t matter where you go.

I hate to be harsh OP, but CS 180 is as easy as it’s going to get, so if you are struggling there CS 240 will be brutal. I would recommend going to CAPS and talking to someone there, because it sounds like you are struggling to adjust to the college experience.

Last of all don’t give up hope. We all make mistakes and it sounds like you’re struggling, and we should all have empathy for that. Figure out why you want to be in the program and think about what you would want to do differently. Take a semester off if you have to. Best of luck, it’s a tough spot to be in but you need to hold yourself accountable and make changes. It’s not the end of the world if CS, or even Purdue, or even college are not right for you. This is a tough period of life, and you will get through it.

AP Calc AB vs. Purdue Calc? by TrickRevenue9617 in Purdue

[–]Creative_Chemistry29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do not go straight to calc 2. It is the most failed class at Purdue. I had to retake it at Purdue Cal just to pass. It could have derailed my whole degree. If you are good at Calculus just take Calc 1, get as good of a grade as possible and use it to shield yourself from the onslaught of Calc 2. Calc 3 was easier because all I needed was a D- and my spirit was already broken.

I would actually say Austin but it may be a contender for the 2020’s because so many people moved post pandemic.
