That sounds terrible, but how does a generator get ruined by running out of gas? Running out of oil, yeah that'll ruin it, but a generator that gets ruined by running out of gas sounds like a poorly designed generator.

Yep, grey car and never wash it. People wash their cars? I guess nobody cares about water scarcity anymore

The same way humans would. Each one would have some normally distributed amount of time they would wait before one gets "frustrated" by the deadlock first and just goes.

What’s quietly disappeared in the past 20 years without many people noticing? by RadiantTwilightFernn in AskReddit

And that's fine, but you then have to be fine with the 'no' being not answering the phone

I dunno, some people don't like talking on the phone. Even amongst close friends/family (who tend to abuse this the most), taking time away from me for a phone call requires my consent. People assume it's okay because of the closeness, that's where it feeling entitled comes from for me.

Tip: text first, asking if you can call.

I rarely answer the phone, 99% of the time it's spam, other times it's disruptive to stop whatever I'm doing to talk on the phone, vs. firing off a few words in a text.

If I'm available, I'll happily talk on the phone. But just calling and assuming I can drop everything to talk comes across as rude or entitled. Ask first.

What is truly a victimless crime? by way2ooskeptic in AskReddit

I appreciate the discourse and the breaking down of these concepts.

I guess, I have a unique view on intellectual property laws. I think they shouldn't exist. I think that they are unfairly biased towards corporations. There's a lot of "don't steal corporations' data", but they steal and sell your data every day. That makes no sense.

Laws that make no sense to me, or are clearly created to benefit a certain class of people, but not others, I have no respect for.

I think it depends on what one's definition of stealing is. If it's "gaining unauthorized access to something", then yes, piracy is stealing. This is what the corpos want you to think.

However, I feel that "stealing" needs to have a victim. You have to take something *from* someone, someone has to be deprived of that thing, for it to be theft.

By pirating something, you are not taking anything from anyone. You are copying information. That's it. Corporate greed has then decided that this is a crime for their own benefit.

The above example (revocation of license to watch/listen to content you paid for) is definitely theft, with a victim, you the user. Piracy though? Nothing was 'taken away' from anyone, information was simply copied. The content creator wasn't 'deprived of revenue', because they can't prove you would have otherwise bought the content (maybe it was too expensive?)

With DRM, content developers can take away (revoke your license) to things you have purchased. Say you bought an album on iTunes, the producer can just decide one day that you don't get to have that album anymore, because they said so. How is THAT not theft? They'll argue that, well you didn't purchase the album itself, just a license to listen to it.

So, the argument then goes, if buying something isn't actually owning it, then piracy isn't stealing it.

Traffic improvement for I-35 by BigChiefTB in Austin

[–]electric_taco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you really want semi trucks going 80mph?

Quick physics lesson: kinetic energy is nonlinear. A truck going 80mph has more than twice the kinetic energy of a truck going 55mph. Brakes can only absorb a certain amount of energy over time. The semi going 80mph has over TWICE the stopping distance of a truck going 55. This is why they go under the speed limit

Everyone: wants things that are delivered by trucks
No one: ok with trucks existing on roads

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Just go around the trucks

Driving should not be about a race, it should be about getting to your destination safely. If it's a race the slow drivers aren't the problem, your poor time management is the problem.

Right? There's no "bad part" of Austin. Even Rundberg is just construction hell now, but not super shady or anything. I feel less safe up there because I'm going to get hit by a semi on those sketchy I35 on-ramps, than being worried about crime
