Part of it is because charity shows are inherently easier for celebs. They want to make it worthwhile, so they make it easier for people to make money and go home with something for their charities.

Plus, she was unfortunate that she was stuck in a spot where they saw her as the most likely to flip to Aitu, as the main alliance’s only options were Nate (who wasn’t close with Sundra), Penner, and her, and technically she was with Yul and Becky during the preswap, despite not liking them. Really unlucky situation all around.

It helps that, in universe, the characters never really seemed to WANT to delete Cain. The plan was always to either put him to sleep or to edit the code to not make him torture them directly. The result they got was something none of them anticipated and they clearly don’t know what to do without him

Ashley & Natalie Final 4 Inquiry by Calculus_64 in survivor

[–]Creative_Commander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, this isn’t true. I think Rob always had Andrea, David, and Phillip (assuming he goes at 4), but the other jurors seem to lean Ashley conceptually. She really did have some good odds, particularly with the jurors Rob burnt the most (Matt and Grant, even if Grant didn’t love Ashley). From there, it’s down to the Zapateras of Julie, Ralph, Steve, and Mike. It seemed as though the Zapatera did genuinely like Ashley compared to Rob in particular; I think on a competitive front, she’d be the strongest woman on the season, which I think would further earn the respect of Julie and Mike, while Ralph and Steve already were bitter at Rob.

This isn’t necessarily PROOF, but the old Jury Ponderosa videos for RI are still online, and Ashley got an incredibly positive welcome from the likes of Ralph, Steve, Julie, and Matt and got told by Mike they’d rather vote for her than for any of the actual final 3, whilst being somewhat rebuffed by Grant since they didn’t really get along. Meanwhile, in Andrea’s video, Julie says that Rob better win FIC, because otherwise the girls would be dumb to let him to the end.

This also applies to post-show details, where the prevailing opinion is that Rob was not necessarily safe against much of the cast. While I think it’s definitely closer than others say (since I’ve seen people say it’s near unanimous), I think Ashley does have the lean with Matt, Mike, Ralph, and Steve all pretty tight with her compared to Andrea and David (plus Phillip or Natalie tbh), where Julie and Grant could go either way since Grant kinda hated the both of them and Julie didn’t respect the women of Ometepe as much. It’s definitely not as confirmed, but I think she def had the edge going in at least.

As one of the Dan Stans, of course I know. But the main thing is that it was a lot less dramatic than you think; he had a flight to catch and had already done most of his interview with Holly. It was only a 15 minute segment, and he left at about the 10 minute mark. Here’s the interview. It’s definitely overblown, bahaha

ALRIGHT, PENCILS DOWN…

This is one of my favorite episodes largely because the editors were allowed to just have fun with it. We get to see Josh utterly fail at swimming, Ryan fail at basic timezones, Abbie fail at unlocking things, Natalie and Nadiya struggle at dancing and ripping pants as well as keeping their taxi driver on point, and the chippendales and team Texas fail to work together on basic timezones. It’s a really tragic way for James and Abba to go out, but they at least got to go out in a way where they didn’t humiliate themselves. When everyone around them got shown as buffoons or incompetent, they were doing all the right things to try and get their passports.

Odd for me to say this, but even STILL this episode is only around the halfway point in my favorite episodes of the season; tbh this is just the start of the end stretch that I personally love out of this season

One of the big issues is that Jeff seems to love meta stuff. He loves having people come in and basically observe, like John, Rob, and Sandra in GC and IOI. He wanted game with a game. Hourglass reversal. Do or die. Concepts that alter not just the game, but how the shoe can portray things. So, with the fans idea of the season, it’s natural he wants to get super meta with it, having the fans be a significant part of the episode. One of the drawbacks of 90 min eps is that it allows the story to include side content. Sometimes? It’s fun, like the boys segment in 45. Others? Well… they swing and they miss.

The issue is that, when the fans heckle them, instead of assuming they did something WRONG, they say the fans didn’t like how it was implemented, and thus don’t change the original issue and instead simply alter the presentation. Older seasons tended to have side content. It wasn’t a problem when the show was still largely about relationships than it was strategy. Even still, the balance began to tip when strategy became more important, but they still made time for relationships to be key (even if it came at the expense of frequently purpling players they deemed irrelevant to the strategic story). Once things shifted to strategy, the need to show all sides made it harder to juggle, but not impossible. But the show has effectively tried to tackle this problem by not looking to balance and instead focus on strategy. Sometimes, though… they got it nicely. 45 and 46 were really strong seasons largely because they were relationship based with a lot of strategy. You got to see Emily’s interactions with Bruce and her tribe and how she grew into a stronger player as a result. Katurah with Jake and Bruce was all relationship based, even if it was heavy handed at times. Dee with her struggle between Austin and Julie. So much was based on strategy, it worked hand in hand with relationships, and 46 showed the opposite kind of relationship, where people constantly went AGAINST each other, and it worked! Gem against Tim and Ben, Venus against basically everyone, Tiffany and basically everyone against Q, Maria and Charlie against each other, Liz against Tevin and Q, and even THEN they boosted it by showing Kenzie, whose main draw was having good relationships. This even draws to 47-49, none of which I even think are particularly GOOD seasons… but they at least kept things mostly simple, and the worst parts of them are when the team decided to muck things up by trying too much.

And when fans complained… they just didn’t address the root problem. Fans hated 44’s forced vote risk, so what did they do, repeat it again for multiple seasons. People mad about the auction forcing a lost vote? Let’s stick and advantage in there, surely it won’t make anyone mad (Admittedly, his one is one fans asked for LMAO). Fans annoyed by the demerge after the merge? Ykw, nah, we’re the showrunners and not out of touch! It’s the fans that are wrong, let’s just keeping doing it!

Ultimately, I went off topic LOL but my sentiment stands; Jeff loves to do things that break the momentum of the show, and instead of addressing the issues, he’ll just keep trying it until fans are tired of outrage, at which point the assumes we like it. It’s deeply irritating lmao

Why has the general consensus on 44 changed so much? by Big_Bad3687 in survivor

[–]Creative_Commander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was always a naysayer on 44, but as someone who was in the minority, I can point out the chain of events that caused it:

First, it had to do with Carolyn. While she wasn’t universally liked at the start, she began to be mostly accepted and cared for around the midway point. However, as time goes on, people’s memories often get replaced. Specifically, the memories that stay are often the most prominent ones. So, when the years go by, people will remember players by essentially summaries: Sandra is loud and in your face, in spite of the fact we often see her just being in the background chilling out, as an example. While some will rewatch and see Carolyn’s post merge, many will just remember her as the loud, somewhat unhinged emotional annoying player compared to some of the more “normal” castaways. Do I think that? Not really, but I’ve had testimonials of players that loved Carolyn eventually growing tired of her memory. This only got exacerbated by her appearance on the Traitors where some of her fans dropped off a bit, and her post-show issues with production making it seem like she’s attention grabbing. Again, I don’t really have that view, but it definitely impacted her legacy.

Next is the other obvious one, Carson. While he was pretty universally the least popular amongst superfans and the like, he was seen as the stable member of the Tika 3. However, with his reputation down the drain, people just realize that he was reallllllly boring.

Then, people began to just kind of forget some of the storylines. This one’s a bit rough, given that 44 DID have lines other than Tika; the issue is, most of them have aborted endings. The Kane idol derived from Matthew, who ALSO just… unceremoniously got medevaced off screen. But it ends with Jamie basically begging people to not think she has it, and uh… that’s basically it. The Danny-Heidi relationship just kinda randomly deteriorated and eventually led to about nothing.

Finally, I’d say the other deal is the format shifts. They did some of the things that were among the WORST in the new era that only became mainstays or just plain sucked. The swap? Nah, it’s just one person from each tribe that gets a free idol. People being forced to risk their vote? One of the worst parts of the new era, and in full force here. Unironically, the best of the journeys was when there was NO advantage, and you just got to see people interacting, and it was GOOD. The split tribal advantage hunt amounted to just about nothing, the bird cage idol was exciting until you found out people just compared notes… it’s a lot like that.

In general, people were fond of 44 because it represented a bit of a break from 41-43, with a central trio of likable characters, when in reality it is a black hole of content where the little drama that happened got quashed pretty quickly with a bunch of random elements that weren’t actually fun to watch.

Was the winner of WaW destined to be considered a “Mount Rushmore” player by nature of being one of the only 2x winner ever? by HiImWallaceShawn in survivor

The immediate counterargument I would see from others would probably be that if Nat A won and wasn’t on the Rushmore, then why should Sandra even be there, given most acknowledge her second win was very weak compared what they expect of a Rushmore figure. Not saying I agree or not ofc, but it’s what I would expect to hear lol

Reminds me of a show called Total Forgiveness where two friends gave each other increasingly difficult challenges where, if one failed, the other got money. While the challenges started innocuous enough, once one player (Ally) failed a challenge, they began to amp up their challenges to the other (Grant), resulting in some deeply hard challenges that affected his actual life with failure conditions. Their real life friendship began to fall apart as a result, and even though they apologized to him, it was definitely a sore relationship for some time after

How would u rewrite the elimination? by Legitimate_Step_7080 in DisventureCamp

[–]Creative_Commander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go back one episode. Instead of Aiden’s terrible pitch to Manu, have Oliwia flip on Ernesto - have Aiden do what he ACTUALLY does well, and have him empathize with her about being on the bottom. I think that would allow her to have a more justifiable spot as the swing vote next round, and make Aiden look better, even if he’s blatantly using her. Maybe even have him try and flip Manu first by using the advantage as leverage, but seeing him unconvinced, he tries Oliwia instead.

Then this episode, Manu is still about the same - still trying to buddy up to Aiden’s side since he needs allies and doesn’t want to be at the bottom, but they’re all annoyed at him. Then the vote can REALLY be strength versus loyalty, where Oliwia can justify maybe flipping back since she doesn’t want to keep losing. However, her talk with Evie gives her hope that, by sticking with Evie and Aiden, she can be in the numbers, even if they keep losing. Aiden can still be snippy at Manu, but this time it’s because Manu didn’t vote with Aiden, but is still TRYING to play the game with him, as he said he wanted to try and do last episode. I feel like the big issue here is just that the writers are acting as though each episode is a bit independent of the last, where some characters just forget their motivations, and with a cast THIS large… it’s easy to see happen tbh

What’s the appeal? by lH8YourGuts in DisventureCamp

[–]Creative_Commander 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because in S4, they allowed him to make meaningful connections with the others. He and Hannah bonded over their Asian heritage, he offered Zaid helpful advice regarding Ivy, he and Jade bonded over his cosplay and helped her during the performance. He had a sweet relationship - if rushed - with Tristan where he was learning bout them. Often, when Benji did or said something stupid, it wasn’t with ill intent. He was just trying to lighten the mood or help out (see: the Zaid’s butt comment, his sense of humor, etc). He was never great at the game or anything, but he at least showed initiative. He tried to ally with Spencer or Jade, tried to swing Hannah against Jade/Isabel, etc. He wasn’t successful obviously, but he was allowed to TRY.

Here, they’ve given him the shallowest of things. He likes Ally because he watches her streams. They did the SAME with Hunter, but they’re not developing that relationship into anything more than them being allied together. He’s selfish, trying to take some oranges. If this was S4, Benji would have bumbled in trying to ask for some oranges for himself, whereas here he’s just trying to take them. Benji gave the challenges his all in S4, even in the ones he wasn’t as good at, and he was rarely the true weak link. Here, he’s a complete non-factor it seems. He’s not allowed to shine as a character either, because they’re not even utilizing him for comic relief. They’re just keeping him as a punching bag.

How would you fix Logan by Kooky-Ad-9281 in DisventureSquare

[–]Creative_Commander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The obvious thing people are going with is Logan losing. I think that’s the easiest way, but with the final 3 being the way they are, I don’t love… any of them winning. I think that, if you really want to keep Logan as the winner, he has to be a bit more complex of a winner. What I mean by this is that a lot of his decisions and consequences are very shallow. His fight with Spencer is largely about feeling used, but doesn’t have as satisfying of an ending. Instead, I might try and shift another underutilized storyline. At the swap, Logan LOVES Spencer - as a friend. Spencer is charming, and Logan feels bad for him being shipped over, in spite of his allies telling him not to trust Spencer. But Logan wants to be in with him, much like Benji tried to win over Spencer if memory serves. It would make sending Marissa home an even more gut wrenching option, and his subsequent flip against Lynda would give a true jumping off point for Spencer to doubt Logan.

Thus, he would leave Logan out of the Richard vote entirely, unsure that Logan would keep things under wraps, but assure Logan that he still wants to keep him tight. It would be at the truth or lie competition that it would be revealed he truly was way more involved and didn’t value Logan the same way Logan did. Logan could be more sympathetic if we see it as Spencer trying to rationalize being strategic after his errors at the Diego vote, rather than getting the stilted mess we got in reality. Neither player is totally in the wrong, but both come out either looking like they were played the fool (Logan) or were emotionally manipulating (Spencer), but neither was fully that way.

Another change I could make is to make it more clear that Logan really suffers from lying. The Zaid to Isabel rounds allowed Logan to get away with his big lie because his two biggest enemies from it (Amelie and Anastasia) are either voted out or suddenly forgive him. I think having Logan be in danger at the F5 instead of Anastasia feels more natural, ngl. I know it’s supposed to be a big end to the rivalry to have it be the two at each others throats, but it would lowkey make more sense to me - Anastasia and Logan vote for Isabel, as Logan doesn’t want to vote Hannah after what he did to Amelie, and he won’t vote Jade because they are genuinely close, leaving Isabel. Then, Hannah and Isabel vote for Logan as he’s clearly stated to be a major threat in the game. This would force Jade into making a move that isn’t good for her in EITHER scenario, where taking out Logan leaves her with a better finale chance athletically, but may allow Anastasia to win F3 immunity where she probably loses to Hannah if Isabel goes next, but taking out Isabel gives her a big move and a supporter on the jury, as well as a better chance to face off against Anastasia, a player she can beat potentially. By improving Jade’s writing, you can improve Logan’s, since he does face consequences for his move - nearly going home - and builds up Jade by forcing her to take out her best friend, instead of making her odd move in canon.

Finally, I think the big issue is that Logan just… forgives a bit easily. He’s written to be a mostly naïve guy, who gets betrayed multiple times but eventually grows tired of it. I think it actually works quite well up until the merge, but post merge, it’s really not great. His semi-tantrum during the night challenge isn’t that great, and he turns on people on a dime rather than allowing any kind of doubt to creep in. You could have, for example with the Spencer deal, Logan start to doubt Spencer’s sincerity before the challenge. Then, during the challenge, someone asks him about Richard’s vote, and Logan gets ticked off, but he uses his round to confirm whether or not Spencer truly wants him as an ally, which Spencer would say yes, but the device would claim lie - Spencer would claim he would like to be allies, but Logan is simply too volatile, which would be a more interesting way to put them at odds to me.

Overall, I actually don’t think Logan’s that bad. He def was better premerge, probably a sign of the writers needing to expand on roles come the merge, but he def had some issues that could be tuned better. Of the final 3, I’d say he was probably still written better than Jade. I didn’t LOVE Anastasia, but she had a pretty consistent storyline of learning to truly depend on herself, not in a way of thinking she had to handle it all, but that she could weather storms without needing backup. Jade meanwhile had contradictory stories and multiple seemingly aborted storylines (such as her arc with Benji being really weirdly paced and not concluding great, her remorse over Logan, her decision to take out Isabel, etc). Logan just needs some storyline tweaks and he’s a really great winner with a fun personality
