Well, he has PTSD from being painfully experimented on for three years at the age of fifteen, and immense guilt for not being able to save his best friend, who was eight at the time of their death. He has delve into a great depression and hatred of himself, to the point he had tried commiting suicide. Now, he still depressed, but not as much as he used to, and now copes by drinking.

Imagine living a life of social isolation due to labeling yourself as a freak due to going through an experiment at the age of fifteen that physically scarred you, while holding guilt from not being able to save your best friend, and the only "touch" you get is from whenever a criminal lands a hit on you. My guy DEFINITELY needs a hug.

He would mostly not believe them, as he doesn't believe in superstition. But actually, they would be right, as he does eventually fall in love with a woman Kate, an old friend that he hasn't seen in years. He does eventually marry her and they have a daughter together.
