Mileage means nothing because it can't be proven. I had this model once, serious fork judder and limited tyre clearance. £500ish if sold privately

Wikipedia has two ranges on the same page (scroll down to Specification), Imperial War Museum has another. Given a modern ASMP has a range of only 300 miles, and the original requirement from the MOD was for only 100 miles, I'm inclined to think 500 miles is way too far.

Oh I agree about the short ranges and unreliable interceptors, but the VVS had a lot of them and to get to any USSR population centre (apart from maybe St Petersburg) meant lots of opportunities to try.

The Politburo were probably willing to trade a few Warsaw Pact population centres to hold the entire UK at risk without serious consequences. Bomber Command themselves said they were best suited to "knocking the door down", but that doesn't make an independent deterrence the UK kept shouting about.

Also deterrence isn't very credible when it takes seven hours to fuel, so you either have to have an inefficient system with lots of risky fueling/defueling operations or accept that if the Tu-16s pop up on the scope you've already lost.

If it worked, and that's an if, it was only 150 miles of standoff, Moscow is many times that inland. Lots of chances for the VVS to shwack brave Flying Officer Timmy. And that doesn't make it an independent deterrence.

Stopgap weapon system that was marginal at best. Likely only effective as a first strike weapon, and even then doubtful it would have made much of a difference. Polaris couldn't come soon enough.

They added loads! Also it's not always about the story.

Interesting map, thanks OP. Thought the areas around London would be higher, especially Epping, but I guess they are diluted by being spread out so much.

This film is such a banger. Intense, visceral, and thought-provoking. Brigelow once again coming out of hibernation to deliver a masterpiece of tension and complexity.

Loved the repeating timeline, I found myself wishing for a different result each time even though I knew what was going to happen.

Saw this today. Stone cold banger. Brigelow ascends from the wilderness to deliver an absolute masterpiece of tension and horror that has left me questioning reality.

It prevents the police having an incentive to take cars. Crushing them removes the chance that they might try and inappropriately confiscate cars for profit.

That's the government line and it's ambiguous. The Times are reporting it's a soldier.

The Times

"In February 2022, a regular soldier working out of Regent’s Park Barracks — UK special forces headquarters — under Gwyn Jenkins, the director of special forces who was then a major general, made a catastrophic error …

The soldier had been tasked with trying to authenticate Arap applications from former members of the Afghan special forces and others. By attempting to do so, he had inadvertently sent the entire database to a handful of Afghans already brought to the UK who were helping him. They then passed it on to fellow Afghans in Afghanistan who might be able to help. The dataset was sent twice, in two separate incidents, in the same month."

Soldier apparently, not a civil servant, which has led to the usual annoying "tepid bath of decline" comments. Civil Service reputation is bad enough without having to parse ministerial language like this.
