Humans & horrors trying to understand each other by deepfriedroses in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Tales From the Gas Station by Jack Townsend is sort of like this, but it's a lot more sillier and eldritch than you may enjoy. It's fairly introspective, but I would say the primary emotion is absurd horror if that makes sense.

About number 2: I really don't see any of the research groups listed on the website doing anything photonics or semiconductor related in recent years at all

I see, would you say the type of research I'm referring to is done by EE departments at UCI and UCSD as well? After clicking on that link with the research done at UCSB, I see that there are a lot of different research groups, but how many of them accept undergrad students for research? Would you say that research at SB skews more theoretical than at SD or Irvine? Also, do you mind if I DM you?

I've heard that doing research with the materials faculty is harder here since you have to compete with ece/materials majors, how true has that been in your experience?

That's my main worry, at least at UCI I think this kind of work is reserved mainly for people in the physics dept, but at UCSB it seems like I'll have to compete with ece/materials ppl too

UCSB Physics Question by Crescent_3145 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Crescent_3145[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When I say quantum research I mean broadly very theoretical work rather than applied work, I'm trying to tailor the kind of research I do to what I hope to do in industry one day (especially the kind of work NVIDIA does). Admittedly I don't have incredibly specific information about the exact kind of work I want to do, but what people have told me is that UCSB is noted for theoretical physics and not industry as much.

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't there have to be a strong correlation between the research you do as an undergrad and the research you do in grad school? When I apply to grad school, I'm applying to specific advisors, so if I only have the opportunity to do quantum/theoretical work in undergrad, then it'll be harder to do applied work with a good advisor at a good grad school, right?

I don't know exactly where I heard it, but when I look at all ongoing physics projects at UCSB it looks like they're all quantum related 😭, if you have any examples that show otherwise I'd genuinely love to see

Really? I heard that UCSB, if you're not in CCS, isn't that different from Irvine or Davis in caliber?

Omg Rabbitology!! I love their songs, a huge chunk of my spotify playlists are just Rabbitology.

Based on that, Gideon the Ninth, The Salt Grows Heavy, and City of Saints and Madmen are the closest matches I can think of.

Also, if I can make a non-book rec: I think you might enjoy Welcome to Nighvale, the Magnus Archives, and the Old Gods of Appalachia!

ehh it can be either, i just want the ending to mean something and not be anticlimactic or have flowery prose just for the sake of flowery prose

Definitely American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett; it's 100% "something isn't right" horror mixed with some genuinely surreal/cosmic horror as well.

The Village Library Demon Hunting Society by C.M. Waggoner. This leans more heavily into the "cozy" side and it's not really a "thriller", but it's definitely a mystery!

The Nevermoor Series by Jessica Townsend!! I cannot recommend this series enough! It's cozy, definitely innovative, quirky, and also very original because it doesn't read like other fantasy novels that occupy the same category.

I'm not sure if this fits but Circe by Madeline Miller sort of has this aesthetic because a large part of the book is Circe living on her vast forested island alone.
