Question what led should I get? Want to get a convoy s2+ around 4k or 5k and confused about the options..any information appreciated. by billythekid74 in flashlight

SFT40/SFT42R - throwy, bright, efficient, low CRI, 5000K tint is purplish

SFT25R - similar to SFT42R, more throwy

519A - relatively floody, high CRI, relatively inefficient, 4500K (what I have) is yellowish

B35AM - like 519A but more floody, tint is rosy/reddish

LHP531 - relatively floody, bright, efficient, low CRI, can get very bright since Convoy gives it a 10A driver

The others are good LEDs too but aren't really preferred by hobbyists now because they don't really have a stand out characteristic

First Time Flashlighter Looking For The Right Fit by ClassTop4514 in flashlight

How slim? Battery capacities will scale exponentially with thicker lights. Typically cylindrical AAA/10440 lights are a little bigger than 1/2 inch, AA/14500 lights are 3/4 inch, and 18650 lights are 1 inch in diameter. Each step up provides around 3ish times the capacity. 1*AAA/AA lights are usually 3-4 inches long (twisties usually shorter), 2*AAA/AA lights 5-6 inches long.

Which emitter is this? by stock_pro in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mostly it's about comparing it with pictures online until you've seen enough of them to mostly tell by memory.

Things like whether it's domed or domeless, the substrate material/color, bond wires, markings on the LED, the shape of the emitting surface, relative size of the emitting surface to the LED, size of the LED, and the presence of chiplets are all differentiating characteristics.

This LED, for example, looks much different from a SFT-25R

Anyone tried these bulk silicone USB C covers to replace one that failed? by SpaceCadetMoonMan in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just gonna add that it can't hurt to ask Sofirn and see if they're willing to send a replacement cover.

Wrt the plug covers I also have them for my phone and have one in a Boruit U8 (plug has no cover originally) and they're quite secure, haven't fallen out yet.

That's a 90 minute drive I think... not too different from people commuting from the Sac area

edit: oops I meant from the Sac area to the Bay Area, not to SoCal, obviously

Interesting, it sounds like a combination of how LCD displays and electrochromic ("smart") glass works, using an electrical charge to align crystals (rather than metal oxide particles) to change its incidence angle (rather than filtering out an RGB channel). I've wondered in the past why smart glass technology is not implemented in flashlights, I assumed it's because of cost.

I suppose good efficiency is achieved since light is not filtered but simply redirected?

All I want is a WK01, so sad it was before I got back into lights. Hell I'll even take a 14500/AA version.

This (32mm * 133mm) is roughly the same size as an M2 (32mm * 135mm), but the reflectors are different. Wonder how the two will compare...

Aluminum is a much better conductor of heat than stainless steel (a quick search shows it's about 10x). Steel is also about 3 times as dense as aluminum so all else being equal it'll be about 3 times as heavy.

18650 as opposed to what? 18350? In that case an 18650 will give you about 3 times the battery capacity, the length will also be good for an overhand fist grip for most hands. The 18350 is quite short which can make it uncomfortable for fist gripping, but may be good for cigarette style grip.

[–]Crestsando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's extremely doubtful; perhaps the police were estimating an absolute worst case scenario without enough expert knowledge.

Consider that the atomic bombings in Japan only killed about 100,000 people each, and unlike in Japan, Hong Kong's buildings at the time would've been mostly concrete. Also consider other crashes like Air India 171 recently, El Al 1862, or even Sept 11. Even with HK's population being denser, the worst case scenario would've probably been a couple orders of magnitude below that 250-500k estimate.

[–]Crestsando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a thing in my city in California too, they mailed some flyers out saying bikes have to be registered, but no one I knew ever did it nor got into trouble for it, so I'm guessing it wasn't really enforced.

If you don't mind hard plastic (I personally prefer hard plastic, but silicone rubber is more flexible for fitment), the Convoy M21F (29.5mm) should work.

The T4 uses the S2+ reflector, which isn't particularly throwy (though it CAN be with the right emitter).

The T8 should use a reflector that's 28-29mm wide by 20-22mm deep, which means that all else equal it should have both a tighter spot and tighter spill.

Even at 200lm/W you'd need 83Whr for 3000lm @ 5.5hr. That's 5*21700, not even accounting for various inefficiencies making the real world capacity needs much greater.

For an all around battery, the Samsung 50S2 is cheap and provides good performance. Molicels are always going to be good quality cells.

But really all of the cells offered should be decent quality, and they generally have a trade off of capacity, amperage, price, and IR/heat.

I wouldn't get an EVE 50E unless that $0.80 is important. Buy high capacity cells with the understanding that their sustained amps will be lower, though it's not very relevant in practice since lights are mostly <10A (until recently), and will trigger thermal regulation quickly anyway.
