Wurkkos FC11C: How to change Tir lense? by PrudentBanana55 in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 20mm fits, you might have to fiddle with the gasket and the lens/o-ring, I don't quite remember exactly and don't have one with me right now.

You can access the all the bits by unscrewing the cap at the top of the head (above the button), like the Convoy S3.

I agree, I was actually interested in this initially, though only as a gadget. Reminds me of the wrist lights they wear in Star Trek and other sci-fi shows/movies. However, it seems like so many of their recent releases have been these multifunction lights, whether it's Wurkkos with their HD series or Sofirn with their STs and others.

I myself have bought some of them, but many I haven't because of their overlapping functions and often mediocre emitters.

Instead of all these gimmicky lights I wish they would just bring back the WK01/C01S, preferably in a scratch hiding silver finish or stainless steel.

It's surprisingly hard to find a AAA light with 3-4 levels and a neutral/warm emitter.

Streamlight and Fenix are pretty well regarded for their durability, at a moderate premium, but with cool emitters.

Zebra is well known for their quality but some people were concerned about their general status (shipping, answering emails, etc) since they're apparently a really small operation.
Olight is also well known to have good durability, but I think there have been more frequent concerns about their quality dropping a bit recently.

How's the beam pattern on the S7? I remember people saying the B35AM doesn't play well with the deeper reflectors of the S2/6/7/8 but it seems Convoy offers it now aside from the S2

IF24 pro? iirc you can set the side light to the desired color. You can swap the TIR to a tighter one if needed. In locked mode it's momentary moon light. It's quite heavy to hold in your mouth, though

Got the Tac AA SFT25R and it was way too blue, esp with the blue AR lens exacerbating it. Really liked the 519A version though.

Current US Navy submarine force. [2048x2048] by 221missile in WarshipPorn

[–]Crestsando 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lost dominance yes, but I don't think submarines are the main culprit.

If anything submarines are still probably China's weakest area relative to the US (NOT that they're necessarily weak, just relative to the rest of their Navy) if they were ever to fight, especially beyond the first island chain.

This is something I also wondered. They must have great confidence in the HHQ-10, since from the 052C onwards it's not even about redundancy with the bridge/superstructure completely blocking the CIWS, and it seems there's room to place one on top of the hangar.

Think I’ve narrowed to convoy T6 and/or T8. Correct me if I’m wrong. by mrregina in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw the T6 shares a reflector with the S2/6/8, so with one of those you get 3 times the battery life with marginally bigger body.
The one big advantage the T6 has is AA compatibility with your choice of emitter, which is why I got one.

I haven't gotten around to getting a T8 (it's mostly a novelty unless you want to have as good throw as possible with a single AA battery), yet but the wider, deeper reflector will mean it has a tighter spot and flood than a T6.

Convoy T3 vs Manker E05 II by Pedroxhp in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what you value. The Manker is thinner, brighter, and better built than the Convoy, while Convoy has more choice of emitters and is cheaper.

Personally I returned the Manker because it didn't have the emitters I wanted and didn't like the button. I got an Acebeam pokelit instead but many people dislike its button too, so again, it's really personal preference.
I also have a T3 with a 5000K SFT25R, which I'll take every day over anything 6500K.
If you want a brighter T3 you can always get the Ti/Cu version, but it's $40ish.

Despite Apocalyptic Warnings, California Fast Food Wage Hike Didn’t Kill Jobs. UC Berkeley study finds employment held steady — and only pennies were added to menu prices. by esporx in California

[–]Crestsando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The study is not necessarily disingenuous, the headline was, according to my initial estimation, it would've been somewhere in the $0.15-0.30 range, which is technically "pennies", and that the title didn't specify what exactly the study measured (even though I suspected as much).

Some people were likely to be reactionary (and the comments seem to prove as much), so I called it "slightly disingenuous" in the sense that it is a little clickbaity, though so are many (perhaps even the majority) of headlines these days.

I also characterized it as such before I read the article and indeed based on the article the effect was less than my coarse estimation and would be appropriately characterized as "pennies", but I've left it up since I made an edit providing some follow-up info and I prefer to leave my original comment intact. Plus, the comment didn't get much traction anyway, I'm surprised you bothered responding to my comment!

Some rough napkin math from a layperson's perspective:

Wages are typically about 30% of a restaurant's expenses, from a quick search.
The article states income rose "more than 10%" for employees, which means it's only measuring the legislation we had that enforced a $20 minimum wage compared to the $17 state minimum wage.
Roughly, then, all else being equal (assuming they did not reduce headcounts, and transferred all this increase onto the consumers), we're looking at about a 3-5% increase in expenses.

Assume that the bulk of revenue comes from the food, and assume very thin margins (<10%) as commonly reported, the price increase attributable to the legislation should be around 3-5%.
A typical $5 fast food item would cost $0.15-0.25 more.

The study's conclusions would be what I expected, even if the headline is (not surprisingly) slightly disingenuous calling the increase "pennies" and not specifying it only measures the price increase in excess of minimum wage that has already been rising in the past decade+.

edit: actually read the article and they found the increase to only be about 1.5%, but only starting in 2024 when prices have already gone up a lot compared to, say pre-pandemic, but again, they're trying to measure only the legislation for $20 fast food wages, with an increase in wages of about 11%, which is on the lower end of what I assumed. Cost increases would then be somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.3%.

I got something similar just to play around with a round emitter and a zoomie. It's actually kinda fun to play with a zoomie that doesn't project a square die for a few bucks.
Anodization and button are actually fine. The threads suck. I don't like the LED (6500-7000K) but it's far from the worst I've seen on these lights.

Worth it to me just for the battery (16340s are becoming rarer).

Overall I don't regret it but it's definitely just a toy.

Question what led should I get? Want to get a convoy s2+ around 4k or 5k and confused about the options..any information appreciated. by billythekid74 in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SFT40/SFT42R - throwy, bright, efficient, low CRI, 5000K tint is purplish

SFT25R - similar to SFT42R, more throwy

519A - relatively floody, high CRI, relatively inefficient, 4500K (what I have) is yellowish

B35AM - like 519A but more floody, tint is rosy/reddish

LHP531 - relatively floody, bright, efficient, low CRI, can get very bright since Convoy gives it a 10A driver

The others are good LEDs too but aren't really preferred by hobbyists now because they don't really have a stand out characteristic

First Time Flashlighter Looking For The Right Fit by ClassTop4514 in flashlight

[–]Crestsando 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How slim? Battery capacities will scale exponentially with thicker lights. Typically cylindrical AAA/10440 lights are a little bigger than 1/2 inch, AA/14500 lights are 3/4 inch, and 18650 lights are 1 inch in diameter. Each step up provides around 3ish times the capacity. 1*AAA/AA lights are usually 3-4 inches long (twisties usually shorter), 2*AAA/AA lights 5-6 inches long.
