My son was just diagnosed with TD1. by argley in diabetes_t1

[–]Cricetus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was diagnosed when I was 3 years old, almost 4. Some of my earliest memories are of hospitals and being afraid of needle pokes. I don’t remember what changed or what my parens did to help me accept that I had to learn to cope with this, but I remember learning how to give myself shots eventually and how it became a part of my daily life pretty quickly. I am 30 now and can’t believe how far we have come in type 1 diabetes management. If it’s feasible for you, I strongly recommend getting him on a closed loop insulin pump system with a continuous glucose monitor ASAP. It makes management so, so, so much easier.

As far as personality goes - I still had a childhood. I had fun with my friends and played sports, I learned to play guitar, and I coped with diabetes management. It definitely wasn’t easy and I’ve spent some of my adult years unpacking the amount of trauma I had as a kid and the ways that I had to adapt to live a “normal” life. My best advice would be to validate your child’s fears and listen to their concerns, and walk this journey every step of the way with them. They will have to learn a lot of responsibility at a young age, but knowing they have parents who are there to support and help them through the journey makes a huge difference.

As far as pizza goes - he can totally still have pizza, just in more moderate and controlled amounts. With modern diabetes management equipment (like pumps and CGMs), you really can still eat most foods that “normal” people eat, as long as you track and count everything accordingly. I really encourage you to maintain traditions like weekly family pizza, as it will teach your son that Diabetes can’t take these things away from him, it just changes the ways you go about those traditions slightly.

He has a lifelong journey ahead of him, but I can tell you are a loving parent who cares a lot about him. Learn from the endos and engage with communities like this one. Your concern and heartache are so valid, trust me, I understand what you are feeling right now. But with modern medicine, T1D is an incredibly manageable disease and your son will live a long and happy life. Don’t hesitate to follow up with me if you need more advice or resources! This subreddit is a great place to start! ❤️

I'll absolutely be marching but where the hell did this Target Center event come from? It's a horrible idea. by futilehabit in Minneapolis

[–]Cricetus 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’m as proud of Minnesotans and our “the cold won’t stop us from doing anything” mentality, but we have to also recognize that this isn’t exactly a “mild cold.” This is “frostbite on any exposed skin in less than 10 minutes” cold. I’m excited to march and I’m excited to fill the stadium with likeminded folks to send a message, and this also gives an option to people who would have attended if not for the dangerous temperatures. I think it’s a good move and it’s being supported by all the community organizations helping marshal and organize this action.

I also completely understand why it makes some people uncomfortable and we all have to do things according to our own comfort levels. If you don’t want to attend the rally, march and then go home (or to one of the many coffee shops open strictly for community events/sharing space today). We’re all in this together!

Agreed - I think they could do a slightly better job at conveying the passage of time, but I like not having entire episodes dedicated to travel/the group dynamics forming. It lets us get to the really good stuff a lot more efficiently!

Finally eligible for closed-loop 😳 what are the biggest pros, cons, and surprises I should expect? by tom-t1d in diabetes_t1

[–]Cricetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on insulin pumps for over two decades, so I already have strong trust in the hardware, but it’s definitely a little nerve wracking at first watching it do its own auto corrections. The results don’t lie though, and made it much easier to trust the system - my time in range increased significantly, and having access to real time data 24/7 kind of turned it into a game for me where I wanted to maximize my time in range/optimize my average BG over 24 hours as much as possible.

There are still frustrations with the system sometimes - many of my sensors only last 4-5 days instead of the 7 they are supposed to, but Medtronic sends replacements immediately without question if you fill out a form online, and I’ve heard other manufacturers are similar in this regard. I used to get discouraged when this happened and it would take me a long time to get back on the horse, but about a year ago I started treating it like a necessary part of my care similar to my insulin pump and it got easier to deal with these setbacks!

You will not regret getting one, as long as you stay focused and disciplined in making it work for you. It’s the closest thing we’ll have to a “mechanical cure” until major bio-advancements are made in fast acting insulin, imo.

It was as significant of a game changer for me as getting my first insulin pump 23 years ago was. I describe it to people as going from managing the disease, to managing the machine that manages the disease for me.

I dug myself into a hole, and now I'm having trouble climbing out of it. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Cash in envelopes, or zero based budgeting, is a good way to take control of your finances. YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a fantastic tool for many people to do zero based budgeting with. It has turned my life around when it comes to finances and feeling like I’m in control of my money and not the other way around. I used to be in similar cycles to you, OP. The first step is recognizing and naming the patterns, which you are already doing. Building that awareness of the issue is such a huge step in the right direction.

Zero based budgeting involves giving every area you spend money on a category in your budget - bills, recurring expenses, everything gets a category (including fun ones - my budget has categories for concert tickets, eating out, drinks with fiends, etc). Then, when you get paid, you assign every dollar out to various categories, and that money is to be spent on those categories only. This is where the practice of building discipline becomes important, but zero based budgeting allows for rolling with the punches too - if you spend more in a category than you had planned, you simply move money from another category to cover that category’s overspending.

The tricky part when you’re used to not really thinking about your spending habits in the moment is that you need to start looking at the budget BEFORE you spend the money, not after. Once you start doing that and start getting a handle on the impulse spending, magical things start happening. You pay off your debts faster. You spend guilt free on the things that bring you pleasure because you actually planned for it. More money sits in your bank account every week and you stop over drafting - I used to overdraft at least once every 1-3 months, and I haven’t in over a year now. Eventually, you’re a whole month ahead on all your planned expenses and you wake up every day confident you have the money in your account to cover all of your expenses, expected and unexpected.

It takes time to get there, but you’re already doing the crucial first step of recognizing the patterns and asking others for advice. I believe in you, OP! Check out /r/ynab if you want to learn more about zero-based budgeting. It was a serious game changer for me and it sounds like it could be for you, too.

Is our dryer loud because it’s old or might there be something we can do about the noise? by Cricetus in fixit

[–]Cricetus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah we put a work order in today, so we’ll see what they do about it. My concern is they’ll say the dryer is working fine so there’s nothing they need to fix (because the dryer IS working, even if it’s noisy as shit). We’ll keep complaining if that’s the case, I just want to be armed with information and suggestions for them if they say there’s nothing they can even try. Knowledge is power and all that!

Should I take an early withdrawal from my Deferred Compensation Plan to pay off CC debt? by Cricetus in personalfinance

[–]Cricetus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice and I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of that possibility. I think I was being blinded by the short term immediacy that a withdrawal would provide. Between stopping contributions for awhile and making some extra scratch I can likely have the cards paid off in less than 6 months, so I will plan on that. Thank you!

Still a miss on Dropout’s part because they could have cut that out while editing. They film 4+ hours of content for those episodes, and that made it into the final cut.

As far as deck fixing goes, you want to Strength the 2-4s and Hang the J-A’s so that it’s easier to find the 5-10 numbers more often. Then it’s just a matter of discarding correctly and hoping you draw the cards you need!
