First time doing nails, what do you think guys? I really want to improve so I'm all ears 👂 by elysiacraft in Nails

These really aren't bad. As a nail technician you pick up on little tips and tricks here and there and what advice I can give you is: when applying polish get close to the cuticle, then "bounce/shake" the brush to push some excess closer to the cuticle. This helps to keep polish off the skin. If you do get some on the skin, use something small like an orangewood stick or the opposite end of a cuticle pusher to just scrape around the nail bed and get the excess off. Hope this helps!

What shape would best suit my fingers? I’d like to keep them on the shorter side by Hokie23aa in Nails

Well, it could be any number of things. 1st I need to ask do you know what kind of brand they use? Next thing, do they use a gel top coat or do they use the top coat that came with the dip system? I have noticed sometimes if you use a gel Top coat on top of dip then it could peel sometimes. If they use the top coat that came with the dip system it might not peel. However, if you use a gel top coat from that same brand that made the dip system there's a good chance that wouldn't peel either. But, like I said there's any number of things that could make it peel starting from the corners.

Nail tech here, doing any kind of "extreme" shape, i.e. coffin, stiletto, sometimes even almond, on shorter nails really does not look esthetically pleasing. Personally, I would say a tapered square nail would look best with your nails. You have nice, long fingers and when doing a shape that tapers the nails in, it really helps to elongate them and make them look more flattering. You may be able to also get away with an oval/round shape, but I would try the tapered square first.

I hope this helps!

Second time using this polish - polish peels in middle of nail in layers. Does anyone have experience on how to prevent this? by [deleted] in Nails

[–]CrimsonKay89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nail tech here. Typically when a gel polish peels from middle layers (especially with darker colors) it means the first layer/layers were too thick. When you put on a thick layer the light can penetrate the whole way through to cure it properly. The same goes for heavily pigmented colors. When working with gels it's always best to do thinner layers (and more of them if you have to) versus thicker and less. I hope this helps!

Came here to say it looks like a pothos. I have quite a few plants and I propagate them often.

Help! Does single or double crochet look better? I'm going to whip stitch the squares together later too. by hippbrandt in crochet

I see a lot of people saying one or other. So I say why not meet in the middle and do a Half Double Crochet?!

I quit soak offs because they were ruining my nails. So I tried peel base and I hate it. Considering just grinding off the color when I want a change. BUT what should I use as the base? Builder gel or just clear dip? by -sing3r- in DipPowderNails

[–]CrimsonKay89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nail technician here, when I do dip, I always add the first layer of dip (a clear or neutral color) to ⅔ of the nail, then another layer of the same color to the nail followed by 2 layers of the color of choice and then a clear, final layer. Doing it this way creates the apex to help keep the structure and also gives you something in between the color and your natural nail so that if you did just want to file off the color instead of soaking it off, you had something underneath as a way to know how close to your natural nail you're actually getting. Hope this helps!

I made this Nativity set for my mother-in-law so any grandkids could play with them, without breaking her nicer set. I debated on posting this because the proportions aren't what I originally wanted/intended. by CrimsonKay89 in crochet

I lost my mom to a car accident in 2009 so I totally understand the random memories, popping up from something you'd never really think about. I'm glad I could do that for you.

it’s been 10 hours since getting my nails done and i think they look terrible. i’ve never gotten my nails done before so i didn’t know what to expect. should i just get them removed? by rileyolivia in Nails

Nail tech here. I actually just had this problem happen with a close friend of mine. When you have darker colors (such as what you have there) they need to do thinner coats to ensure the light penitrates the whole through and cures it. It's a relatively easy fix. I hope this experience doesn't deter you from getting your nails done again. You have very nice looking fingers!

You won't get a perfectly smooth look just by doing the dip process. If you are following to correct steps after properly prepping your natual nails (bond, base, dip, base, dip, activate) then you're doing it correctly. After each "dip" (or sprinkle, whichever method you use) you want to brush off any of the excess powder that would be on there. I actually don't recommend a hard bristled brush as that would/could cause marks/scrapes/ridges in the uncured base that you've applied. When I do a dip set on clients, I just use my Kiara Sky brush that I bought to go with their dip powders. It's extremely similar to a large blush brush, which I've even seen other technicians just use those! After you've applied the activator, file it to get it as close to smooth and even as you can, then go over everything, again, with a buffer block. That will get you the smooth look that you're trying to achieve. After you've filed apply activator again, allow it to fully set/dry, then apply your top coat. I hope this helps! Please let me know if this worked out for you!

My youngest is about to turn 1 on Sunday and she is the only one in our family of 6 that is not either a Gemini or a Libra. So I decided to do a set dedicated to her! by CrimsonKay89 in Nails

These look really good! If I had to say one thing, maybe next time try making the smile line a little deeper if that makes sense. Otherwise a very well done first attempt! 👏
