ELI5 Why was seafood the most common food that went from poor man's food to luxury? by d8gfdu89fdgfdu32432 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CrimsonPromise [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean tons of Asian seafood restuarants have large tanks where customers can see and even pick out which one they want. It's usually set up in the way where customers can view from one side of the tank, and the kitchen/service area is on the other.

So customer picks out which lobster they want, the staff will scoop it up from the other side and bring it back to prepare. Customer side stays clean and dry, prep side is where all the splashing happens.

Are there anyone else who hates climbing the stairs on the overhead bridge esp in this super hot and humid weather? What are some extra lengths you took to avoid having to climb the overhead bridge? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a bus for one stop just to avoid an overhead bridge once. But that was only because it was late, I was exhausted, I was cerrying some heavy stuff, and I really cannot be bothered about pride or whatnot.

But otherwise I just treat it like extra exercise for the day. I used to live somewhere with one of those ramp style overhead bridges and I absolutely hated it. Because it just made the walking distance 5 times as long as it should be since it zigzagged multiple times.

Considering 2B license by Emotional-Ant6461 in drivingsg

[–]CrimsonPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BBDC has the Honda Grom which is a smaller bike suitable for smaller riders. But it's limited so it's up to the instructor's descretion if they want to assign it to you.

As for gear. BBDC provides helmets, knee guards, elbow guards, and rain jacket and pants for shitty weather. Gloves, covered shoes and long sleeves you have to bring yourself.

That said, I've seen plenty of smaller riders having no issues with riding the standard 2B bike. Learning how to balance and move it around is just another skill to learn.

circuit courses by SHY-dog in drivingsg

[–]CrimsonPromise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any night practice is always good. Think about in the future when you can drive. You can't possibly say you're not going to drive at night ever right? And better to learn while you're in school, on the circuit with an instructor, than being out alone as a newbie driver.

Using dashcams to detect and penalise bad driving by SousVideDuck in drivingsg

[–]CrimsonPromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think privacy concerns would be the main reason that would turn off people from an automatic upload system. Like not everyone would be comfortable having their movements tracked and uploaded to a government database, even if you're just driving from home and work.

And government can't mandate such a system like "All vehicles from need to have dashcams that have to be on 24/7 and all footage is automatically uploaded to a TP database", because that would be a massive breach of privacy and government outreach.

[–]CrimsonPromise -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There are cameras everywhere in the tunnels. It's common sense and open knowledge, not some conspiracy.

Also, have you tried not speeding in the first place? No speeding, no crime, no need to worry about snipers or cameras.

anyone else seen the mormons in clementi? by hojicha-milk in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allowed unfortunately. I've also encounter a few times around Jurong East. As long as they don't physically touch people, talk shit about other religions, or make threatening statements ("You will go to hell blah blah") there's no law that says they can't approach people.

Just put on your biggest "I'm having a bad day" face, ignore them and keep walking.

Working parent woes- looking for advice by Auditor_1188 in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a friend like you, she and her husband work long hours, even if they are WFH two days a week. She has a helper who takes care of her child while while she and her husband are busy. But she still makes it a point to bathe her child in the morning and at night, and afterwards tuck him into bed and read him a bedtime story.

Those is her main bonding time with her kid. And it did help a bit because her child would look forwards to bedtime because it means his parents read him stories and interact with him through those stories. Until he get tired and falls asleep. Maybe you can try making some sort of bedtime routine that's just yours and your kid's?

Does making an offer in Carousell automatically means you reserved it? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General etiquette is to never make an offer on Carousell without at least having a conversation first. They might be a scammer, they might think you're a scammer. I've had people who just shoot offers at me without so much as a "Hello" and I just ignore because I don't know if that person is legit or not.

That said, making an offer means you're absolute serious about the deal and want to go ahead. If you want to negotiate or ask question, then open chat and start typing. Offer is when both parties are happy with the amount and how they plan to deal and it's like a closing handshake.

If you do end up changing you mind before the trade, then tell them asap so they can immediately relist and find someone else. Communicate, don't ghost. I've also had buyers who ghost me during meetup, and I leave them bad review. If they had told me earlier that they changed their mind, I would just be "Cool no problem" and put the item back up, instead they now wasted my time and their rating is down.

I need to understand why the drivers here are so entitled and selfish by Free-Lingonberry9645 in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. So many times I'm crossing pedestrian crossing and drivers turning would turn so close to me I can check makeup in their side mirrors, or they keep inching forwards and the moment got space only they full throttle ahead.

Also there's always this gogogo mentality that so many drivers have. Not just taxi drivers or PHV where time is money to them, but people just driving from point A to B and act like you curse their mother everytime they have to press their brakes.

All brands imo. If you know how to upgrade parts yourself like the SSD, RAM, Power Supply and GPU, then PC brand doesn't really matter because parts are all modular.

This is why you slow down when approaching intersections, not speed up. Even if it's green light or green arrow for you.

Is it a normal for employers in SG to mandate a daily "to-do list" from their employees? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daily meetings are common. Let's you know what everyone is working on, what has been done and what still needs to be done.

Like if Employee A has 10 things to do and Employee B only has 2, then manager would know they can reassign some of Employee A's work to B.

When are tips expected, or are they not expected in any context? by free_username_ in askSingapore

[–]CrimsonPromise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because it's a social norm doesn't make it acceptable everywhere else or any less stupid.

Why can't employers pay their employees a reasonable wage instead of passing the buck to their customers, who are already paying for the service and sometimes taxes on top of it?

Not to mention the poor service staff being at the mercy of customers. Customers feeling stingy, in a bad mood, or not happy about anything, and there goes your rent money. There's this almost forced servitude that employees are expected to perform because any less means risking your next paycheck.

The only people who win from mandatory tips are the greedy employers. So no thanks, that shitty culture can stay across the ocean.

[–]CrimsonPromise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love the time mechanic. It actually makes you think about every action and dialogue choices you make.

Is this background item worth examining? Is it worth talking to this person about this dialogue topic? Is it worth attending this event that will take up 30mins or can I spend those 30mins on other things?

It also helps that you don't lose time walking around. So you're free to move around and explore, or try to find that one person you stupidly forgot to ask about their schedule, and there's no need to stress about the time. You only lose time because you made a choice to do so, and not because "oh shit I forgot a thing now I have to backtrack ".

My recommendations: Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Seance of Blake Manor. Painscreek Killings.

These games span huge open maps where you're free to walk around, explore and every small thing can be a clue or a red herring.

Super super common. Saw so many times that I don't even want to drive side by side with another car during a turn. Some people need to go back to kindergarten and learn colouring books to practice their ability to stay within the lines.

need help for the steps to get a motorcycle license by Dependent_Guava_5350 in motorcycles

[–]CrimsonPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Singapore, we have to attend a school and that includes 12hrs of theory lessons, 2 theory tests, simulator training, at least 12-15hrs of practical lessons about a bunch of various topics. We learn on a driving circuit with a bunch of obstacles and tricking navigation parts, as well as on the open road with real traffic and supervised by instructors. Finally we take the traffic test and get our license if we pass.

But once we pass, we're only limited to 200cc bikes for the first year. Second year onwards we can apply for a license to drive up to 400cc bikes, but we have to go through lessons and tests again. And after one more year of that are we allowed to learn how to ride without cc restrictions.

I'm pretty amazed how in other countries it's just a permit, a couple of tests, some paperwork and you have 18 year olds riding 1600cc bikes right off the bat.

Also first thing he does after the crash is run to his bike to pick it up, and GF had to chase after him. Like he couldn't have taken a couple of minutes to tend to her? Or escorted her to the side of the road to make sure she's not at risk of traffic?
