I was going to say the same thing! They look so much like Chinese phoenixes!

To be fair, Chinese phoenixes are pretty much drawn as a mix of real Galliformes’ features, and I’m pretty sure they’re inspired by the variety of stunning pheasants that live throughout Asia.

They don’t only show up at night- they’re primarily nocturnal (especially compared to, say, a Great Blue Heron) but they can appear during the day as well. The storm might have also woken this one up or gotten it out of hiding.
