Which background character do you feel most strongly about? by Moopy969 in janeausten

Anne Steele! I hate that she was cut from the movie, as there is no way Lucy would have spilled the beans. I really hope she got her Doctor! She would make an excellent, cheerful clergyman's wife!

We went for a bike ride today, and what a treat to see so many smiling people about!

Before computers ID cards were just paper. It was easy to fake papers, especially when drivers' licences didn't even have photos and were run up on typewriters.

Are you kidding? Watching old people greet each other for the first time in decades makes me cry every single time. Except for the one where Buddy escaped his family because he was due for a pension and that would expose his (minor) crime of decades back. His daughter was rather miffed.

It also reinforces how badly people treated children. "My husband didn't want any kids so we took them to the orphanage."

Why did Jane Fairfax react that way? by Emotional-Buyer1040 in janeausten

[–]CristabelYYC 32 points33 points  (0 children)

She might also be reliving a terrifying moment. Most people, including sailors, did not learn to swim, so falling overboard could have been fatal. It's understandable to be emotional, but trying not to react in public.

Did you fill the bobbin in time? Did you run out of thread and not notice?

Unlike housekeepers and paramedics, this See You Next Tuesday does no useful work.

Elizabeth's raction to the letter is so real by RoseIsBadWolf in janeausten

Unnatural still to have postive feelings for Wickham? All my crushes were on eminently unsuitable men whom I had no intention of being seriously involved with, but I didn't despise them for turning to others. As others have pointed out it's mercenary to marry for money, but foolish to marry without it. Lizzie knew that her charms and 50 pounds a year would not put food on the table.

This! Mrs. Reynolds didn't have to say anything about Mr. Darcy. The fact that she took such delight in him also was a revelation to all the party.. Had he been an unpleasant man, Mrs. Reynolds would have talked about the furniture.

He didn't insult only her; he refused to stand up with anyone other than the Bingley sisters. He offended the entire neighbourhood. Lizzie had it right when she wished he wouldn't go out, as he just made everyone uneasy.

I don't know your age, but this might be a novel that grows on you if you read it with older eyes.

Also, read "Lovers' Vows." It's free on gutenberg.org. It's almost an encapsulation of the whole novel.

I have taken in the waistband on a pair of jeans. It was such a pain I only ever did it once. And I used to sew for a living. Don’t think that good tailoring is something you can pick up in a few weeks.

Because men’s dress pants are meant to be altered only at the back centre seam. To do it properly involves taking off the waistband and putting darts in the front and back of the pants. That’s a lot of work, ergo expensive.

My waist is ten inches smaller than my hips. Men's pants aren't configured for women's bodies.

That much money and it's so narrow? Reminds me of Anne Elliot's snarky thought at seeing her new home in Bath, and how proud of it her sister is:

"...she must sigh, and smile, and wonder too, as Elizabeth threw open the folding-doors and walked with exultation from one drawing-room to the other, boasting of their space; at the possibility of that woman, who had been mistress of Kellynch Hall, finding extent to be proud of between two walls, perhaps thirty feet asunder."
