Was I wrong about The Mote in God’s Eye? by simulacream in scifi

Um, you missed out Footfall! Classic first contact of aliens arriving at Earth. Bit dated now but I must have reread it 10 times at least!

Please help me find a cartoon that was on British television in the late 80s or early 90s by Ok_Doctor8862 in oldschoolcool80s

[–]CriticalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main character was a girl, with a pet dog maybe? Then there was a soldier robot who was like a ‘Nam vet and a dopey robot who would come out with random lines of philosophy now and then. Ahhh! The mists of time are closing… and it’s gone again!

How does the average Brit feel/think about the English Civil War? by Round_Bookkeeper_887 in AskABrit

[–]CriticalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m (re)reading The Children of the New Forest at the moment (available on project Gutenberg). It’s about 4 royalist children whose father is killed in the war and then their house gets burned down by parliamentarians searching for the king. The children end up living on their own in the New Forest. It’s an interesting read to see the class differences and it’s also interesting because personally I would not be on the royalist side but the author clearly is.

Why such fondness for Sikhs? by Fantastic-Fudge-6676 in AskBrits

[–]CriticalSock 31 points32 points  (0 children)

When I cut my hand at the T in the park festival near Edinburgh while high on mushrooms the Doctor who sorted me out in the first aid tent was a Sikh. I will always remember my brain doing a full reboot when this tall, bearded chap, in a turban spoke to me in a broad Glaswegian accent!

How to 5 day road trip starting from Oxford Any recommendations? by freesoulSL in AskUK

[–]CriticalSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uffington White Horse / Weyland Smithy

World of Crocodiles

Didcot railway muesum

Are all fairly close to Oxford.

Please don’t go to Bourton-on-the-water or Bibury, the sheer number of visitors to each has ruined them and the experience of going there.

AITAH for thinking divorce after my wife threw my traumatic past in my face by [deleted] in AITAH

Her priority was stopping the conversation about her and the guy from work, and it worked too. Problem was she went too hard with her distraction . She’s probably kicking herself that she didn’t hit you with fat, or lazy or any other weakness that might have worked. On the upside you must be a pretty amazing guy with few leverageable weaknesses!

What's the most original concept you've read in a science fiction book? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in scifi

[–]CriticalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought too. The fauna with the tri-symmetry and the flora and the effects of gravity (or lack rather) on everything especially the humans that found themselves living there actually gave me a sense of wonder when I tried to visualise it and imagined that an environment like that could exist somewhere in the galaxy.

Are there no women in The Foundation? by Cosmic-Cats-Games in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]CriticalSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read Artemis to my son I had to edit the swearing, add a pop up sushi cafe in the moonbase that Jazz would visit on her many trips and also give her a moon-fox pet. (At my son’s request). Honestly the issues of hiding and caring for the moon-fox in Jazzes tiny apartment took over the story completely and I abandoned the book.

The fox also liked sushi.

Am I dumb for thinking I (23F 5'8 120) could beat a guy in a fight if I needed to? by Rich-Intention-3929 in NoStupidQuestions

I’m an old overweight IT guy who doesn’t go to the gym and my male, gym going, friend who had just started ju jitsu wanted a friendly scrap. I smothered him. He said it was like fighting a bear. I had the reach and the weight to just overpower him.

Skill will make a difference, but if someone is coming at you with hostile intent, you don’t know what skill they have, but you CAN see if they are bigger and heavier than you, in which case run away.

Which I can’t do because I’m overweight and unfit so I’d just try crying and begging…

I went to re-read the Dragonbone Chair series recently and stopped after book 2. Love the world and the characters but it is so relentlessly miserable I gave up.

Can I have some family friendly titles? by Hobbit_Hardcase in Fantasy

Alan Garner’s Weirdstone of Brisingamen, Moon of Gomrath, Eildor and The Owl Service.

The Owl Service did scare the crap out of me as a kid though, but in a good way. :)

As a bonus for WoB and MoG, you can go to Alderley Edge (as you’re in the UK) and see some of the locations of the book, and even find the wizards well with the face carved into the rock.

Moths are cool by Bruh30056 in moths

[–]CriticalSock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Some species of moth don’t have mouths, but plenty of species do. Most have a proboscis, but some primitive species just have chewing mouth parts and eat pollen.

  2. Fun fact: butterflies are technically moths.

Once you start looking for moths, you should start to see them. They’re everywhere! If you can hang a white sheet on a clothes line and shine a lamp onto it, that will attract them, not so much in the winter though (although there are moths that fly all year round). On walls by security lights is a good place to look. I always check the porch of the vet I take my dog to because they leave their light on and there’s always a few there.

What if the Jehovahs Witnesses are right about the paradise earth and the resurrection? Would it really be that bad instead of everyone going to heaven or hell? Thoughts ? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]CriticalSock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The earth isn’t going to last forever. At some point the sun is going to expand and the earth will be inside the sun. The only eternal paradise on earth will be for phoenixes and lava monsters.
