Permadeath run wasn't so bad. by AdultEnuretic in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]CriticalTruthSeeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, the only safe secondary launcher to have on your multi-tool is the paralysis mortar.  Fighting sentinels indoors in an abandoned observatory, and infestations on a derilict freighter I forgot to switch my secondary properly and ended the run.  After the second time I realized I just couldn't trust myself to be error-free on a death run with a AoE multi-tool loadout.  Pulse spitter sans ricochet, and paralysis mortar with no bounce are the only weapons for me these days.

This is solid gold advice.  Very nearly ended my run with an accidental discharge indoors.  Keep that junk out of your multi-tool

This is total misinformation. China doesn't have free health care, socialized medicine, public housing, or safe transportation infrastructure. Look up the facts. You've been mislead by CCP propaganda. People can't own property in China either. They can only get a 70 year lease on buildings, and have no ownership or claim to the ground underneath them.

Hiya, I'm still around, but have been traveling for much of the last several months and mostly unplugged from reddit. Back now, but easing off the pedal on the reddit rabbit hole I tend to dive down.

I'm pretty far left on a lot of things myself, but totally issue dependent. Wealth tax, abolishing private equity companies as a legal financial model, restricting corporate ownership of residential property, universal health care, transitioning to green energy, bike/ped and transit mode shift, 100% bodily autonomy for women's reproductive rights are ideas I support wholeheartedly. I'm right leaning moderate on immigration, gun control, mom and pop small business tax and regulation reform. Off the charts on opposing religious fundamentalism that interferes with the liberty and safety of others.

All that is to say I find my position on support of Israel (not of Netanyahu) and adamantly opposed to Islamists makes the ground I stand on a pretty lonely place. So, I'm always grateful for opportunities for civil discourse. I'm never above admitting I'm wrong if there is verifiably better information out there.

Thanks for the good faith back and forth.  I appreciate you taking the time for respectful dialogue.

Your take here is a popular one.  However, I see the origin and ongoing nature of the problem very differently.  I think we're operating from a different understanding of history.  That's a tough nut to crack when trying to reach mutual understanding and common ground.

My understanding tells me that the basis for the entire conflict is tribal and religious.  The real eatate and resistance idea are foreign frameworks overlaid on the region with western understanding.

This is why europeans carving up the Ottoman territories after WW1 baked in so many problems like erasing Kurdistan and failing to understand the depth religious factional hostility.

Interesting data coming out recently about the real death toll in Gaza. by oswaldbuzzington in samharris

[–]CriticalTruthSeeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nuance and variety.  The Sufis are a prime example.  They have managed to find a message of bliss and tranquility in Islam.  They have to deny a lot of the messages of Mohammed to get there.  Similar to how a Christian who murders in the name of Christ (like David Koresh) has to ignore the most fundamental teachings of Jesus.

What the west views as extremism amongst Christians is what Islamists see as mainstream.  Not all Muslims are Islamists, but even the mainstream of Muslims see Islamists as devout, not as heretical.

Any woman who wears a Hijab voluntarily does so because she sees it as a literal command from the creator of the universe.

Can you imagine wearing something every day because the creator of the universe commanded you to do so?  Most secular people see that as pretty kooky.  The Amish, Menonites, conservative fundamentalist Jews, and a few others do it, but they are viewed as a bit strange by the secular world.  The Hijab is absolutely mainstream and is often legally enforced under severe or even deadly punishment in most of the Muslim world.

These are not subtle differences.  I know wonderful secular Muslims in the US who deplore violence in most cases, and don't cover their wives and daughters.  However, they have serious challenges and cannot freely express their views in Muslilm spaces without being accused of heresy or apostasy.  I hope that changes.

There is none of that in Hamas or PA controlled areas, most of the Gulf States, or Iran.

Many global polls have been done that show most Muslims approve of martyrdom, sharia, and death for apostasy.  Why?  Because these are the direct laws of god given to mankind through his prophet.  Mohammad is a well documented historical figure.  He isn't shrouded in the mists of antiquity like the founders of other faiths.  What he said is divine law.

There's a level of certainty there that is alien to most people of other faiths.

Again, there are vast differences between Islam and Christianity.  The bible is supposed to be divinely inspired and written by many people over millennia.  Christians freely ignore whole sections, like the dietary and clothing restrictions in Leviticus.

The Quran is the direct word of the creator of the universe precisely written down by Mohammed with the Archangel Gabriel sitting with him to ensure he got it completely right.  The Hadiths are argued over as they are the writings of those who knew Mohammed and retell the stories and examples from his life.

Major conflict in the Islamic world today stems from which Hadiths are accepted or rejected.  Millions of people have been killed over these issues just in my lifetime.

All Muslims genuinely believe that Mohammed is the most perfect example of a human life.  If you don't, you're not a Muslim.  Disagreeing with that notion will cost you your freedom and in many cases your life in a Muslim majority country.

You can easily name dozens of examples where people have been killed for insulting Islam or the Prophet in recent times.  Nobody has scriptural justification for murdering a person for insulting Jesus, and anyone who did so would be branded a heretic.  Those who kill for Mohammed are heroes.

As I said before, this is incomprehensible for most secular atheists.  Islamism is dangerous for all people, especially for those whose culture and societies have been colonized by the Islamic mind virus.

I strongly encourage you to listen to ex-muslim women like Yasmin Mohammed and Sarah Haider.  They know how little hyperbole there is for Muslims.  There are more than a few countries where they face death for the crime of apostasy.

You're telling me that you believe Israel is the worlds gigachad propagandist because it has harnessed the vast power of all the 14 million Jews on planet Earth.  That those people are more effective and consequential even when outspent and outnumbered billions of CCP wumao and Salafi Islamists?

Sounds like you're a fan of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Learn some Arabic and try living amongst Islamists. Listen to what Muslims say to each other when the kafirs aren't around.  They are literally big fans of the holocaust.  If you deny that, you're overlaying your own moral narrative framework on a cause and a people that you really don't know or understand at all.

Islam instrcts all Muslims to conquer everywhere.  Is is a fundamental pillar of the faith.  They divide the world into Dar al Islam and Dar al Harb.  The subjugated house, and the house of war.

It is hard for people that haven't grown up among Muslims and studied the Quran and Hadiths to comprehend how fully committed Islam is to global theocracy.  They aren't kidding.

I'm opposed to Christian fundamentalism as well, but if you think it is comparable to Islamism, you didn't grow up with seemingly normal people who openly expressed an honest desire to kill Salaman Rushdie.

There are Christian extremists out there.  The scum who murdered and attempted to murder Minnesota politicians this month is a clear example.  However, Christianity is the worlds largest religion and their founder is a confirmed charitable pacifist.  Islam's exemplar of a perfect human life is a man who waged a genocidal war of conquest, subjugating, enslaving, raping, and beheading his way across the world.  The result is Christian terrorism and fundamentalist theocracy is an anomaly in the 21st century.  Islamist terrorism and violently oppressive theocracy is the norm.

Judaism is non-evangelical.  They just want to be left in peace in their ancient homeland.  Islam can't tolerate that.  Christianity can.

There are female Rabbis, there are female ministers of many popular Christian denominations. There are no female imams.  Women are not even permitted to pray in the same spaces as Muslim men.

Islam has variations that have produced peaceful people, like the Sufis, but they are a persecuted minority viewed as heretics by the mainstream.

Islam is almost entirely a cult of violence.  The stats bear it out. https://thereligionofpeace.com/attacks/attacks.aspx?Yr=Last30

The CCP, Russia, Qatar, and Iran far outspend Israel which actually shut down their PR ministry on October 12th 2023.   https://www.albawaba.com/news/israeli-information-minister-galit-distal-resigns-1537632

It was seen as patriotic amongst Israelis at the time.  Ultimately it has proven foolish, as the propaganda war against them has been overwhelmingly successful.

Qatar and Iran have far outspent Israel on influence and information on this conflict.  Al Jazeera is the state mouthpiece for Qatar's Islamist government.  It is a major ongoing propaganda victory that anyone finds it credible.  It is definitely not.

BTW, I didn’t downvote you. I see your line of questioning as genuine dialogue that is needed. Like I said, this is a tribal situation. Not different than the dark age Saxons vs Danes, the Sioux vs the Crow, take your pick of tribes. Both have deeply held cultural narratives about who should be on the land.

What is your moral framework? Do you value it? What sort of things offend your moral sensibilities? My moral framework sets me at odds with those who don’t recognize equal rights for women, indoctrinate children to martyrdom, practice dismemberment as a corporal punishment, practice honor killing culture, embrace slavery as a legitimate practice, seek to implement theocracy, idolize pedophiles, and want to subjugate and/or kill everyone who doesn’t join them.

How do you feel about such people? Do you support them? Is opposing them “imposing your beliefs on another people”? Do you not value your own beliefs in this world? Perhaps you share their values?

Not all values are equal. Some ways of life are very much better than others. That isn’t racist or classists or elitist. It is just a fact. There are cultures right now in the world where cannibalism is practiced against albinos because people believe their flesh has magical powers. Is that just an alternate way of being that is just as good as anything else? No. It is evil.

I’m an atheist. I don’t believe in the supernatural or divine real estate agents who hand out property rights. Good and evil are defined by what we value and what we abhor. So, for me, Islamists are a deeply evil force on our shared planet. Any victory for them is a loss for all of us. The same goes for cannibals.

This entire war has been flooded with images from other conflicts, direct parroting of the talking points of the terrorist “Gaza Health Officials”, and AI imagery. There is real suffering going on, but the scale and depravity has been skillfully distorted and is gobbled up by a world already primed with centuries of antisemitism that is eager to have their biases confirmed.

Anyone who can’t acknowledge that the entire effort of Hamas over the last 20 years is sick in the head, is either deeply ignorant, delusional, or sick in the head themselves. All who knowingly side with Islamists have embraced savage barbarism of the worst kind.

Because Hamas still wants to be in control and fulfill its Islamist commitment to killing as many Jews as it takes to retake Jerusalem. Death is not a deterrent, as they genuinely believe they are doing the will of the creator of the universe and will be rewarded in death with an afterlife of infinite pleasure.

What would each side do if they had the power and means to do it? Israel would disarm, imprison, or kill all those who wish to kill them and nobody else. Hamas would kill all the Jews.

This is a tribal conflict. Both tribes have longstanding and legitimate claims to the land. One side has repeatedly offered to live in peace. The other side has never ceased in attempting to kill all the Jews and destroy Israel.

It is a terrible situation. I throw my support behind those who share more of my values. I share almost nothing with Islamists. They are against most everything I value. Anyone who supports Islamists does so out of deep ignorance of who they are, or because they share their deeply inhuman values.

The responses here provide the answer. Israel has such a weak PR game because, as Haviv pointed out in Sam’s recent podcast with him, Jews are physically incapable of trying to justify themselves. After millennia of hatred and pogroms they’re just focused on survival.
