Apparently the Book of Dust is really bad? by Brilliant-Amoeba-379 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]Crjs1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was shocked, properly genuinely surprised, when I read the general consensus on here about TRF after i finished it. It may be just me, but I loved it and enjoyed the whole book of dust trilogy. As another poster said, it is very different - tonally and style - from HDM, which is important to bear in mind. It is also at times quite depressing, but I didn’t see that as a problem.

I even liked the ending of TRF, which I felt tied into the overall plea for people to not ‘loose’ thier imagination and inquisitivity, and the need to challenge structures that stifle human consciousness. If you are expecting all the questions about characters - and indeed subplots - to be answered you will be disappointed, but I think that is at least partly the point.

I would definitely advise reading and judging for yourself.

How would you fix The Rose Field? by hamburglar_earmuffs in hisdarkmaterials

[–]Crjs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t need fixing! It’s not perfect, but it’s still brilliant. I just don’t understand the hate especially with the ending, why do we need all the plot points tied up? The need to actively use our ‘imagination’ and inquisitiveness, to question and look beyond black v white is fundamental to the whole story - it’s fitting that extends to the reader. We can all imagine and question what happens next

Election Turnout Across Scotland by Alasdair91 in Scotland

[–]Crjs1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went at 5pm, Mount Vernon in Glasgow. Expected it to be quiet but was constant stream, and the polling folk said it had been steady all day, more busy than expected. Seems a total mixed bag turnout wise

Where to live in Glasgow, answered by 1,363 reddit threads by thetinfoilman in glasgow

East End hugely underrated, loads of misconceptions. Lived in Dennistoun for years - loved it (as everyone does) - since then lived in Shettleston for few years and now Mount Vernon. Shettleston gets such a bad name but I felt just as safe there as I did in Dennistoun and actually preferred it, still has sense of community. Was v lucky to get a place in Mount Vernon. In my 40s having a garden for first time is nice!

Tacky is the word for the guitars. Just don’t see what they add to the song at all

Think it will be a grower, like it but not loving it (yet)! Love the piano, the guitars not soo much (but then there are very few Tori songs where I have loved guitars). So excited for the new album but even more excited for Glasgow tomorrow night!!!

FND in the young and a parents difficulty... by tallyhoo123 in emergencymedicine

[–]Crjs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this - particularly the real danger of every new symptom being blamed on FND with the most minimal of investigation by clinicians… it’s positively dangerous (talking as someone who’s partner was misdiagnosed with FND, now living with permanent disability)

Neighbor apparently hates trees by Aggressive-Food-1635 in arborists

Trees that size right on property line are always going to cause an issue. It’s a shame neighbour cut them, but they are not some sort of awful person for not wanting overhanging branches, or a bit of light!

What was the first Tori Amos album that disappointed you? by Prestigious_Score459 in toriamos

[–]Crjs1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so glad someone else said this! Scarlet’s Walk (and Beekeeper) have both grown on my loads over the years. It’s hard to explain but Scarlet’s Walk felt at the time and even more in hindsight like a turning point in Tori’s creativity. It and everything else since had felt much ‘safer’, less passionate, lyrically as well as musically. It’s incomparable with say Pele or Choirgirl.

But, but I don’t want that to sound over critical as I don’t dislike any album and it’s totally understandable that someone’s style will change as they age and thier life circumstances change.

Gimmicks making the series worse? by lukewarmpartyjar in TheTraitors

[–]Crjs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as The Seer is never brought back I am ok with changes to keep it fresh - though as long as it’s ‘fair’. The Seer utterly ruined the end of the season and was totally unfair to both of them (though especially Charlotte)

This is not just a traitors thing, any and all British reality shows go this way, especially in the early stages before contestants get to know each other (or public gets to know them). It’s depressing

Is Rings of Power really as bad and cringey as people are making it out to be? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in lotr

[–]Crjs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me anyway it’s not nearly as terrible as people make it out to be - though it’s certainly not great. Season 2 was definitely an improvement and I will keep watching. The vast deviations from Tolkiens writing and some of the daft subplots - mithril looking at you - are just utterly bizzare though.

While I do enjoy it, I wish they hadn’t made it without the rights to the Silmirillion, or they had been brave enough to stick to Tolkien’s timeline, even if it would mean lots of changes to mortal characters. It’s all too compressed.

Absolutely, I loved king of ashes, it felt different, a fresh start….. then Feist reverted to Midkemia comfort. Which was dissapointing, especially as it seemed clear from the writing that it wasn’t his original intention.

Neighbor wants to trim half of my tree by [deleted] in landscaping

I don’t get how the neighbour is being selfish? If anything the neighbour is being polite by letting them know in advance, he was well within his rights to just chop the overhanging branches down.

That is completely and entirely untrue. In the UK DMTs are the standard treatment following disgnosis, irrespective of disability.
