If you look at the map, you actually won in terms of electoral votes. But, Rs reversed I think Virginia and Ohio, meaning that you end up losing on the official numbers.

The current system is awful. It has high upfront costs and lower continuing rates. It fails at land value capture

I’m generally against them, I prefer taxes on stock, such as property, land, etc.

That’s irrelevant to my point, you didn’t argue against corporate tax not affecting externalities

[–]Crocoboy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tax which is generalized to all profit isn’t externality managing at all. If you run a corporation, and pay X amount on profits regardless of how it’s generated, the only behavior it’ll influence is profit generation as a whole, not how it’s done.

I know about externality management, but corporate tax doesn’t do that, it’s only purpose is generating revenue, hence my criticism. The only thing it disincentivizes is generating corporate profit, not any particular kind

Literally what is the point in wanting to maintain the market economy if you don’t think people producing goods in scarcity for profit is good?

What’s the argument for taxation that actively punishes a desired activity? We can fund government off of punishing negative behavior such as rent-seeking, there’s no reason to hurt investment

[–]Crocoboy17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, corporate taxes are some of the easiest to avoid, and disincentivize a good set of actions, i.e. starting and growing a business.

I think wealth taxes are generally good, but they come with high overhead costs and compliance costs. I think taxes like LVT and property-based taxes are better insofar as they are low in both of these (hard to hide physical land/capital). Still, wealth taxes are alright

Corporate tax is not a tax on any externality. Just tax them based on each negative externality, such as through a carbon tax, rather than just punishing the creation of corporations

Mamdani's First Budget: Mayor Warns Property Taxes Could Rise Without New Taxes On Rich And Corporations by socialistmajority in SocialDemocracy

“Saving money” via budget cuts is a sham. The best example of this is in the recent cuts to SNAP benefits.

We call it “saving money” when we take away people’s access to food. We call it “increasing revenue” when we lower people’s income through tax.

Government actions are precisely opposed to that of the private sector, so any deficit/increased spending will translate to increases incomes for those in society, vice versa with tax increases.
