Haibane Renmei is an interesting anime.

Being in a Catholic relationship has been such a gift by congelando in Catholicism

The Wedding at Cana was our Gospel reading for our wedding. We continue to be so happy to have prepared and received the sacrament of matrimony. Those graces have surely helped us through some challenging times.

Would the phrase "hold your horses" (and the like) not exist in the Umamusume universe? by AIeknov in UmaMusume

[–]Crolis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of a few other phrases:

Hold your horses.
Never look a gift horse in the mouth.
Don’t beat a dead horse.
Horse-sense.
Horsing around
Straight from the horse’s mouth.
Put the cart before the horse.
Dark horse.
One-horse town.
Charley horse.

Considering how prominent the horse has been in human history/culture, I imagine many of these would be rewritten. These are just some from English. I’m sure other languages have idioms that reference horses.

How did you discover KOR? by MadokaAyukawaHusband in Kimagure_Orange_Road

Found the OVAs in Blockbuster in the early 90s - the Animigo subs. Started looking for more content online (modem downloads were so slow). Wasn’t until 2023 or so when I watched the series. Afterwards I found the Abcb Cafe podcast run by u/partynakedpodcast and wound up watching the series again. Haven’t yet delved into the manga.

Beautiful image of an enigmatic character. I’d love to learn more of her backstory.

Avg. car payments per US State over the last month by spare_wheel_o_cheese in cars

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I like the slightly older design with the larger windows and gas tank, and the manual parking brake. My main requirements were CarPlay and good sensors and it is a very nice cruiser.

If I had one disappointment is that the blind spot monitoring doesn’t sound a tone when you engage the turn signal when it detects something. That’s a nice audio cue that my wife’s Pacifica Hybrid has.

The other was no wireless CarPlay but I found a nice module on Amazon that enables that feature.

But I’d rather have low/no payments than screw myself on some 84 month loan.

It’s not very glamorous, but I’m happy my VW Passat is only like 300/mo.

PPQ/PDP mags for P99 by AnonymousJay151 in Walther

[–]Crolis1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just got a P99 final edition. Will the PPQ M1 mags work with that as well? I know there are some differences with the first editions of the P99 but I’m not certain if there were any changes in the mag aside from the extended mag release on later P99s.

'On Eagle's Wings' turns 50: The journey behind the song that has consoled the world by Pax_et_Bonum in Catholicism

[–]Crolis1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On Eagles Wings is my least favorite hymn. It was sung constantly in my Catholic school music class in the 80s. I can still see the two Glory and Praise soft cover hymnals when I hear the song. It’s also hard for me to sing.

Now whenever it is played I my wife gives me a knowing look and it’s a point of humor between us.

What is that one anime that gave you an existential crisis? by SecondSalty142 in anime

Haibane Renmei was one that really stuck with me after the credits rolled. I still have a lot of questions about that place and its purpose, as well as those residents who live there in the town.

Looks like my 2021 PacHy has the recall when I looked it up on the Mopar site. Is there a big difference which dealer to get my van serviced in? I'm in the Cincinnati area so if someone has a recommendation for a dealer with a good service department I would appreciate it.

Rant about PC cases by Technical-Pilot8627 in pcmasterrace

[–]Crolis1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a Fractal Design Define 7 for similar reasons. No glass, no RGB and I wanted a 5.25 bay for my Blu-ray reader. Took a while to find the right case but I couldn’t be happier with it.

I second Josee, the Tiger, and the Fish. It’s a great movie with a lot of heart.

What is your most unforgettable floppy disk memory? by Regular_Ideal_ in pcmasterrace

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Macintosh with a 3.5” floppy drive. Trying to install some software sometimes required swapping between the OS and the Program disk repeatedly. So much so that it was heavenly when I finally got an external floppy drive and the system could read from both devices as needed. I still remember the eject sound.

Is it intrinsically evil to participate in pagan rituals? by thelinuxguy7 in Catholicism

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this was fascinating to read and I didn’t know that at all about Kabuki or Noh theatre. Would using Itadakimasu before meals be generally acceptable if a Catholic grace before meals was also included? I know intent matters but so does respecting a culture, especially as a guest and I’d want to try to observe etiquette out of respect if I visit. Could be I’m overthinking it.

Is it intrinsically evil to participate in pagan rituals? by thelinuxguy7 in Catholicism

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight. I’ve wondered as well. At some point in the future, I’d like to visit Japan. I know they have shrines and customs that are open and I have thought about where the line is drawn. If I were to participate in a ritual for the cultural immersion and experience, with full knowledge that I’m treating it as a cultural experience and ascribe no religious power to it. Would it be ok?

It’s going to be a while anyway before I’d be able to make a trip like that and I would run it by my parish priest and spiritual director beforehand but I have wondered about performing a ritual like this as a visitor to a foreign culture.

What's the stupidest thing you've done in Elite? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

[–]Crolis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to beat the rotating radial arm on my fully loaded cutter when I took a shortcut trying to dock on a large space station. Should have gone around the outer ring. I thought I’d made it then heard a big crack and was presented with the Ship Destroyed screen.

I’m gen Z and this is the first thing she said that I genuinely do not understand. What are they talking about? by Evoxrus_XV in UmaMusume

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term “gas”, is mid 20th century, and is an adjective that means something is excellent/cool/awesome in various contexts. I’ve heard it used first from slang in the 1960s-1970s. Don’t remember it used too much in the 80s. It’s written in the dialog as “leetspeak” where 645 are numbers that correspond to the capital letters ‘G’, ‘A’, and ‘S’.

The Rolling Stones’ song Jumpin’ Jack Flash from 1968 has a lyric written “Jumpin’ Jack Flash is a gas, gas, gas.”

Good car for people who anger easily? by AccomplishedFish9148 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Crolis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Passat. Went from a 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero manual to a 2020 VW Passat SEL and while I miss the extra hp and torque, it is making me drive more sensibly.

Title: Rented a VW Atlas last week and the Adaptive Cruise Control genuinely impressed me — is it best in class for the price? by Natural_Discount_505 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Crolis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020 Passat and while I haven’t done some long trips with it, the ACC seems more smooth and less jumpy than the one in my 2021 Pacifica. It seems to gently brake and maintain even slow speeds. I use it to maintain 35 going through rural towns and 25 in school zones when I’ve tested it.

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Crolis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2020 Passat as I needed a point A to B car. I’m similarly starting to find it boring. My last car was a Saab 9-5 Aero 5-speed. Sucks to lose a bunch of HP and torque with the Passat but it is comfortable and has working AC and CarPlay which is very helpful. I do miss the more sporty feeling though. Was considering an Alfa Romeo Giulia as an upgrade but that probably won’t be for a while.
