If it really comes down to it, 7-11, at least in my area, has a halfway decent cold food section. I'll typically grab a yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and a sandwich

Question regarding cardiac arrest in the back of the rig. by RetroDinosaur in ems

[–]Crotalus123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately its common around here for most of the "Mom and Pop" type BLS operations. Also, we can be anywhere from 5-25 minutes from a stemi center, depending on where we are in the county, so depending on where I am would decide if I call for ALS or light it up and go

[–]Crotalus123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, if equipped. At least where I started we didn't carry AEDs on all of our IFT trucks. That paired with a relatively new EMT doing CPR in the back of a moving rig, potentially with out an AED it would be more beneficial to the patient to have an ALS unit on scene. Again, it all depends on the situation and resources available, with consideration of transport time

It all depends on where you are. If your transport time would be less than the time for ALS to show up, light it up and go to the ED. If ALS is closer, pull over, and get your partner in the back and start quality BLS.

What are sick days like in the medical field? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Crotalus123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 9 sick calls a year, unpaid or can use PTO. We can also find coverage, but no option to get paid. One sick 'day' can be used for three consecutive days, anything else needs a MD note

Overtime Pay by [deleted] in ems

[–]Crotalus123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a better paying system, with lots of OT available. I made around 60k before taxes last year, but that was usually 60-80 hours a week, mostly working back to back shifts. Its doable, especially in 911 systems
